It was originally condos, but it was changed to rental during the recession.

Star Riverside I think its still called, though correct me if Im wrong. They have topped out on the building that is closest to the river. The tallest building will be somewhere between 11-13 floors and the second tallest is 9 floors. Should be a neat cluster of buildings, very dense looking since they are so close to each other.

I think that one is just over 300 units and is to be rated LEED Silver. A nice project.

I've been trying to get the building heights for that one. They haven't even responded. Hello?

Its not happening fast enough. That is the best area in the whole city for redevelopment and should be even more of an urban area (and hopefully even denser eventually) than west campus. It has access to the river, good wide roads that will be perfect for rail, and it is even closer to dt than west campus

I like how this tranquil scene avoids showing I-35. I really do wonder how noisy it's going to be. Otherwise, great location.

I one stayed in the motel that used to be on that location when coming back to Austin for a visit a few years ago. It was actually pretty quiet and tranquil. Keep in mind that highway traffic is pretty much continuous sounds as cars drive by at steady speeds. There's not much noise from screeching brakes and horns.

New upscale hotel planned for the Domain

Quote:
By Shonda Novak AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Published: 8:06 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012

A new hotel concept reminiscent of the roadside motor court hotels in the 1940s and 1950s will take up residence at the upscale Domain project in North Austin.

Billed as "a 21st century re-interpretation of the nostalgic motor court," the upscale concept is the latest by Valencia Group. The Houston-based company develops and operates boutique luxury hotels, including the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk in San Antonio.

Scheduled to break ground this month and open early next year, Lone Star Court will be built at the south end of the Domain project, which includes shops, restaurants, offices and apartments. The hotel will have 123 rooms and about 2,000 square feet of indoor meeting space. It also will include an outdoor covered pavilion of 1,600 square feet, plus an adjacent open-air lawn that will add 1,800 square feet to the total meeting space.

Valencia Group declined to disclose the project's cost.

The hotel will be "one of a kind and totally unique to Austin, Texas," Doyle Graham Jr. — founder, president and CEO of Valencia Group — said in a statement.

Lone Star Court in Austin will be the flagship of what will eventually be a series of court concept hotels across the southeastern United States," each of which will "capture the essence of the cities where they are located," said Graham, whose privately held corporation focuses on acquiring, developing and managing hotel properties.

Rates will range from $150 to $300 a night.

Um really??? That looks like it should be built in Dripping Springs, not at the Domain. So an area that is supposed to be dense and pedestrian oriented will yet again be adding a low density and car centric development. The idea of it doesn't sound bad but the location is not right, this hotel would be more suitable for the outer edges or in one of the surrounding towns that would like to keep an old town feel.

^Totally agree and its strange because on one of the renderings posted recently that showed a large area of the Domain there was a hotel Valencia that was at least 8 stories tall, I hope this one does not take it's place...

Seeing as how the City is not even scheduled to finished extendng 2nd street and the north/south roads flanking Seaholm until 2015, I find this hard to believe.

I understand what you're saying, but as someone who travels I-35 every morning and evening this struck me as funny. I guess "steady speeds" can mean 2-3 mph, as well as 55-60 mph, right.

Just the offices, retail and restaurants inside the old plant.

Understandable, but they are still starting in July and planning on being done by late '13. Are you thinking of the library? The road and new library are supposed to be done by 2015.

2nd street wasn't what was holding the Seaholm part back. The Union Pacific was. That was sorted out last summer.
