Thanks MonctonRad!!

As for Target, from what i've been hearing is it was when, not if. Then it went back to if, not when but it HAS to happen sometime.

The way i see is that from what i hear, Target needs 120,000 sq ft and we know Zellers is NOT that. If you look at Plaza's site plan, there is room to expand north (right side of Zellers), but that would really eat into parking (even though it hardly seems its being used anyway). But, Target will be a HUGE draw as compared to Zellers and they would probably need those parking spaces.

So, the only other way to go is south where there's oviously leased spaces in the way, with the exceptin of the now vacant Sony. Hmmmm, me think that the weak performing Sony might have been graciously let out of their lease. Thats NOT fact (from what i know of), just theory.....

That still leaves a bunch in the way (Allstate, Moneymart, Rogers, Dr Joyce, Subway, Aarons, and Battery House) and it would cost Plaza a bundle to move locked in leases to make room for Target. Although, i have heard that Aarons is moving to the upcoming plaza that will be built to the south of Dairy Queen.

I heard that Subway was offered some chump change by Plaza to move to the new plaza but they had just reno'd ($$) and said, fudge that, why move farther away from a huge draw like Target.....

So far the votes for a new Moncton subforum are:

7 in favour
1 on the fence
0 against.

I still want more input and don't plan on getting back in touch with the forum administrators for at least another week. There is no hurry on this. If anyone has any feelings about this then please make a post and let us know....

Well, I'm kinda thinking the same way as Myles... while I agree it's time for change, I'm rather reluctant to split things apart into a bunch of subsections.

On one hand, I can see how annoying it can be to search a single thread for older posts. On the other hand, you only need to search ONE thread, not half a dozen.

When I first started browsing through the SkyScraperPage.com site several years ago, the most annoying thing was trying to figure out which thread contained info about new stores/restos opening up or closing (the primary thing I'm interested in) & it seemed the more subsections a thread had, the longer it took to find the right one. It was also pain trying to figure out which thread was for which city since back then, certain things were lumped together.

I say if we go into subsections, we should LIMIT the number we have and make sure they are CLEARLY labeled as to prevent confusion for new readers (similar to what Hogie75 suggested a few posts back).

There should also be a link posted on the last-ever post in this current thread (whatever post # that happens to be) which redirects readers to whatever new thread/subsections we decide to setup.

The consensus/feeling seems to be (and I may be misreading) that if we go for a subforum, it will be a SINGLE subforum for Moncton (and a separate one for St John's and maybe one for Saint John, but that's getting ahead of ourselves). So the main decision to be made is "Would this fit better in the (single) Moncton subforum, or in the more general Atlantic Provinces forum?"

A subforum for Moncton within the Atlantic Section.

This subforum would contain a number of user created threads that would deal with a variety of topics.

While we might start off with a few threads splitting discussions up on a geographic basis (Moncton, Riverview, Dieppe etc), there would be nothing to prevent users from broadening this and adding threads for other topics of interest (for example a thread for Champlain Place, or a thread for the GMIA).

This could be quite powerful in terms of making it easier to finds postings of interest. For example, if someone is really only interested in finding out what's going on a Champlain Place, they can zero right in on the Champlain Place thread rather than going through the last 20 pages of the current Moncton thread to see if anything interesting has been posted.

I view a seperate Moncton subforum as essentially a more efficient filing system.

Cafe Cognito

Well I am not sure if this was mentioned earlier.. But Cafe Cognito has found a new location on Main Street. It is across from the Mariott between Catch 22 and Gifts Gallore in the Humphrey/Haddad Block.

sign in the window says .. Scheduled Opening March 2012. The Space is currently under heavy construction.

Oh and regarding the sub-forum, not exactly on the up-n-up on terminologies or exactly what that entails but if the Majority says it isnt a bad thing then.. I'm all for it.

One question. if that is the case.. what happens to the existing postings on this forum?
Cheers all..
Happy Tuesday - 3 days til friday!

We're well past the 10,000 post mark. Threads are supposed to get archived at that point. If you click on the drop down menu for navigating the site, the very lat item is Thread Archive. That's where it will end up.

For those of you who are really interested, this is the link for the .pdf document for Plan Moncton, which is the city's visioning exercise for municipal development over the course of the next 25 years. This document was just released.

It's 171 pages long. Enjoy!

Ill throw my vote in for an Edmonton style sub-forum

Also I was in the Codiac Transpo office the other day and they informed me there is a guy currently applying the new decals to all the busses. There are a few done now and they look 1000% better to me!

Thanks mmmatt

By my updated reckoning thats
- 10 votes for
- 0 against
- 2 on the fence
for an Edmonton style subforum within SSP Atlantic

I think as many contributors as possible should express an opinion. I will keep the poll open for one more week before contacting the forum administrators to see if they will consider this.

I will also suggest to the administrators that they move the existing Moncton thread into the new subforum (at least temporarily) so that we can relocate some of the old posts out of the old thread into newer threads within the subforum. This would give us some continuity as we move forward.

So in essence we are saying:

Regional - Canada - Atlantic Provinces - Moncton (sub forum)

Then, with various sticky's for Construction, Infrastructure, Environmental, etc?

Also, with various threads about whichever topics?

Where would the "Moncton" sub-forum cover...Moncton/Dieppe/Riverview? Would that include Hillsborough, Memramcook, Shediac, Salisbury, etc?

Just curious...I'm more or less for it, just wondering how it will go?

JL

Yes, the Moncton subforum would be listed on the top bar of the Atlantic Canada section of SSP, right below the Halifax SSP Local.

A subforum is not as complicated as a full SSP Local, but it would allow multiple individual threads dedicated to specific topics. It would essentially provide for a filing system for all topics of interest in greater Moncton.

If you want to see the difference between an SSP Local and a subforum, compare the difference between the sections for Halifax and Edmonton. I don't have any interest in a full SSP Local; it's too cumbersome and it can be difficult to find topics of interest. A subforum on the other hand has a cleaner interface.

I would envisage a Moncton subforum covering all of southeastern NB, even Shediac and Sackville. Individual threads could be community or neighbourhood based, or could deal with specific topics (politics, transportation, retail) or in special cases, with particularly large projects, I could see threads being devoted to a single cause (for example the downtown events centre).

Anyone could create a new thread in the Moncton subforum, just as in the same way as individual members can create new threads in the Atlantic Canada section.

The main reasons to do this as far as I'm concerned are to:
1- have a better filing system so that it is easier to find previous posts of interest.
2- have better continuity of discussions on individual topics (without the conversation being disrupted by several pages of unrelated posts)
3- Increase the "shelf life" of the forum. The current Moncton thread is about to be retired after 5 years and 10,000 posts. The Halifax SSP Local however is still going strong after more than 40,000 posts. I would like to see a Moncton forum with greater longevity. A subforum would allow us to do this as it would take considerably longer for individual threads in the subforum to reach the 10,000 post limit.

target

I was at zellers on monday and the cashier told me that the zellers in the north end will be closing and opening as a target in 2013 and that the bay is now looking for a new home

Edmonton style gets my vote.

I'll have to change my ways to find my unread though. I currently use a bookmark set to the last page I viewed so I can see everything from where I left off. I'll sacrifice a little bit of habit for the greater cause lol

Hopefully she knows what she is talking about.

The issue with the NW Centre Zellers is that it is not quite large enough for Target. If Target wants in the Moncton market however (and we assume they do), then this store is the only game in town. As I have speculated, the old Sony store next door would make a fine location for the Starbuck's that is usually associated with Target. It would also provide some space for them to add floorspace for the store in behind. Hopefully they could also expand the store a bit in behind to make up the difference.

In the meantime, it appears that Target is playing hardball with Plaza Corp and has not yet signed a new lease agreement. This could all fall through, but I don't really think that's an option. I tend to agree that Target will be in Moncton in 2013.

Regarding the Bay; that's the rumour we have heard on the forum before. About the only place they could easily go to would be the Zellers at Superstore Mall, but that is an inferior location. It could do as a stopgap until something better comes along however.

Is Codiac Transit expanding it's service to Halifax anytime soon? I believe there is demand for it here.
