I saw a couple of Jim Watson's tweets coming out in defence of the redevelopment. Here's hoping this development goes ahead and remains true to the renderings.

For those of us who have been wondering if Ottawa can support a CFL team and pro soccer, the latest census news should be encouraging. A larger pop increases the probabilty that one can develop a reasonable size fan base, as the Senators have done.

It shows Ottawa-Gatineau growing at a faster rate than the national average.

Ottawa-Gatineau retains its ranking as the fourth largest metro area, and therefore the fouth largest market for selling stuff.

No wonder the CFL wants to be back here-it is not only about selling tickets to games--but also about the fourth largest TV market--and the more viewers you have the more money you can charge for advertising.

Now the last line of this excerpt from an article in the Citizen will not be encouraging to those of us who favour intensification.

Quote:
Ottawa-Gatineau’s population was pegged at more than 1.2 million as of 2011, up 9.1 per cent from 1.1 million in 2006, according to the census released Wednesday by Statistics Canada. Previous growth rates in this region, spanning part of eastern Ontario and western Quebec, have been 5.9 and 6.5 per cent, respectively, between 2001 and 2006, and between1996 and 2001.

The most recent growth allowed the capital region to retain its position as the fourth biggest metropolitan area in Canada, behind Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, and just slightly ahead of Calgary, which saw a strong growth rate of 12.6 per cent in the past five years.

Like other major cities in the country, Ottawa-Gatineau’s growth was concentrated in its suburbs as opposed to downtown neighbourhoods.

I think that anyone apposed to redevelopment plans such as all of the ones presented by OSEG is foolish...they are essentially meeting ALL criteria, and flexible enough to make all of the amendments that are asked of them.

I wonder if this might be suitable as outdoor festival space. I'm sure the Glebe folks wouldn't be a fan though, on second thought. Let's wait for that idea until it's built.

I find it promising that in this image, the streets north of Lansdowne as far as the eye can see have been populated with Vancouver-style lowrise apartment blocks (and Old Ottawa East has had its forestation restored to pre-19th century levels).

that was for 5 years period... the last year was promising:

from today's OBJ:

Most of the construction came in the city's core, the agency noted, with declines seen in Kanata in both single-detached homes and townhomes.

The media is reporting that the Ottawa 67s will announce shortly that they are moving to Scotiabank Place for the next two seasons. They want to get out of the way of the construction schedule for Lansdowne.

The media is saying that the 67s will not raise ticket prices as a result of the move.

The underground parking is off of the parkway. I'm kind of surprised there isn't a second or third entrance or exit. (at least from what I can tell)

The main problem I see with the Lansdowne redevelopment is access. It is poorly served by buses, Bank St. is already clogged a lot of the time, never mind when there is an event at Lansdowne, and the underground parking will only have half as many parking spaces as there are on the surface right now.

I can see people willing to live with that when there is a special event at Lansdowne, but I don't see many people going there for everyday uses, such as shopping or seeing a movie.

It seems to me that the parking lot is empty when there isn't a special event today. 1,000 parking spaces will be ample to address everyday needs. I also believe that they will have a transportation strategy that will include beefed up bus service.

The media is stating the obvious because only a moron would think they'd raise prices when they're moving to a location further from most of their customers with almost double the available seats. If anything, they should be cutting their prices substantially.

Strange.. I would have thought they'd want access to the parking lot from Bank. If access to parking is exclusively via the parkway, those first intersections to the parkway are going to jam up (5th Ave, Wilton Cres).

I had assumed that the rationale behind bringing car traffic onto the new streets was to get them to the parking lot. If not, why are cars in there? Is there curbside parking?

There's an access off Bank as well. I also believe there is to be curbside parking.
