Definitely. Wood is used a lot in lieu of concrete because of its ability to move in quakes.

But I was thinking more about crawl spaces instead of basements, half basements rather than full basements, lack of insulation and storm windows, etc. In addition, lots of interaction between outdoors and indoors through glass doors and windows...........something I liked a lot but you would rarely see in much colder climates.

Yeah, so all the homeless people will migrate over there from Pershing Square.

This trailer for The Voice looks like it was staged at the Biltmore:

Actually steel and iron fare better in earthquakes, cause of there ability to absorb waves by swaying, and have a greater give point unlike wood which snaps very easily. Steel is very expensive so only when a building is greater that 6 floors do the economics of building with steel become justifiable. Otherwise wood will prevail. Cheap Cheap Wood.

If it's something like Millenium Park in Chicago then sure. But I would still rather see some type of development there as opposed to a park.

I'd love to see a park in the area, but I'm not sure the LA Central site is the best choice. Siigh...if only the convention center expansion project included making Lindsay plaza less plaza-ish and more of a park.

I agree. The Gilbert Lindsay skate park will be a bit of green in the land full of teal and concrete.

That's a huge increase.......27% in two years. I suspect its an anomaly. This report suggests that rents have gone up 7% since the low point in 2009:

I agree with JDRCRASH and ThreeHundred that LA Central should not be a park and instead remain the large scale development it was planning to be. Currently, LA Live itself doesn't make sense and having a full-scale entertainment complex like LA Central across the street would create great cross flow between the two and also feel more COMPLETE/Coherent.

If we could build a large park elsewhere in DTLA, it should be on the large surface lot at Olive and Olympic across from the Reserve Lofts. That location is more central to everyone, surrounded by South Park, FiDi, Historic Core, and Fashion District.

The Park Plaza hosts events and film shoots but is in transition otherwise. The tower floors have been gutted -- clearly there's a plan afoot -- and the views up there are terrific.

The neighborhood poses challenges, but the building's proximity to downtown, MacArthur Park and Wilshire Blvd. is an inherent strength. Will be interesting to see what happens...

Wood is only cheap here because the American lumber industry is subsidized (to the chagrin of Canadians). I have a Greek friend who when we would go out and about in LA and he'd see apartments and houses under construction and see the wood framing, he'd remark how amazed he was because in Greece, wood would actually be quite expensive to use as a building material; in Greece, reinforced concrete is more commonly used.

Wonderful. It should look as good as new after some TLC and elbow grease.

Needs a lot of work, but this is Andrew Meieran behind this - who owns the Edison - so it will look great when finished. The guy has pretty impeccable design tastes, especially for historic buildings.

What's the story behind the beautiful St. Vincent's building across the street? Who owns it? Is it ever going to be beautified?
