Wow, great news about the movie studio! I've always felt that Utah really should have more of a presence in the film industry given the influence of Sundance (among other things)...now it seems that's finally happening.

Utah has always had a pretty big presence in the movie business. Until the Studios in the Orlando area popped up with sound stages etc, Utah for a good part of the last century was the #2 state, behind CA, for number of movies filmed in the state.

We still do have a lot filmed here but the studio will allow for post production and sound stage work to now occur here, rather than back to CA.

Well, I know that Utah has quite a large presence in the movie industry. I didn't realize they were #2 for so long though.

How many other places have movie studios?

Sundance tightly protected in deal for Raleigh Studios

Jay Hamburger, The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/park_city-news/ci_19812101

...The agreement also, though, calls for the developer to encourage the movie studio Raleigh Studios -- to enter into deals with Sundance organizers. Details have not been discussed publicly, but it is plausible that potential Raleigh Studios-Sundance agreements could put festival screenings and special events at the complex...

...Under the terms of the deal, Park City leaders would agree to a development spreading through 374,000 gross square feet, including a 100-room hotel, an entertainment center and a digital-media center...

...The annexation encompasses 29 acres of land at the southwest corner of Quinn's Junction. The acreage is across S.R. 248 from the Park City Ice Arena and abuts the land where a project called Park City Heights will be developed...

Retail sector stages a comeback in Utah

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...ation.html.csp

By Leslie Mitchell
The Salt Lake Tribune

...Thain said Utah’s economy — in the top five in terms of job creation — is one factor in the increased retail activity. But perhaps even more so, he said, companies such as Crate & Barrel and H&M are reporting that the performances of their first Utah locations have exceeded expectations. “The numbers speak for themselves,” Thain said.

Strong sales, for example, have prompted Cheesecake Factory to open a second Utah location, in City Creek Center in downtown Salt Lake City, as a companion to its first, at Fashion Place Mall, which opened in 2007...

And the film 127 hours was filmed in the old Granite Furniture Warehouse in Sugar House.

They have started construction on the Birkhill Apartments in Murray. Directly across Main St from the existing condo's and townhomes.

The 45th S Traxx station will be the first densly populated and first true TOD outside of downtown. Birkhill condos, town homes and now apartments combined with the new apartments to the west of Traxx will be a great example of true TOD living.

sorry about the image quality. Phone combined with driving.

Good size building for that area. There is a link with a rendering.

I like the building, and I'm sure the market research supports the plan but I don't like the 2/3 affordable and 1/3 market rate mix. I would rather see more of a 50/50 split, or reversed 2/3 1/3 in the other direction. Financing may be dictating that split however. If that is the case I am fine with it and glad to see more things being built at Fireclay. It will help the area continue to develop into a great TOD.

I think it's a great addition to the station area. Having more people in the area will also help the existing development to begin to lease more commercial spaces. There is also a residential building going up just east of this project on Main Street.

Oh ok, when I drove by last there was no sign, just a big hole. You may already know this, but there are also some going up if you drive west on Fireclay Avenue adjacent to the TRAX station. It's the ones discussed in this article: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/neighbo...urray.html.csp

Looking at Google Earth, I was thinking how nice it would be to continue Main Street all the way to Vine Street. Connecting the Fireclay location with the Downtown Murray area. In time, extending Main to Vine Street, might encourage infill development between the two locations.
