Weren't you the one that first came up with an idea for a bar/pub underneath the viaduct?

lol, we might get bitch-slapped by Jlo by talking about this in here.

Anyways, what would we have to do to make it happen?

hehe, yeah, we are starting to go off topic. Sadly i feel there is not much we can do, the crusaders have started marching....

Anyways, overall this tower will be an improvement to the site, but i just wish it was re-creating the sub terrain urban restaurant space that is being lost, and yes, these restaurants have been successful.

I'll move the conversation over to the viaduct thread, and if one of the mods could be so kind as to move the posts in here about the viaducts over, that'd be awesome.

It's not to late to push for developments under the viaducts, their eventually "tear down" is still only in planning stages yet, and still a long ways out before anything gets the axe. If the viaducts can be stitched into the urban fabric before they are torn down, it could make tearing them down impractical and politically suicidal for the standing council at the time.

My first question is, who owns the land under the viaducts? Particularly the spot we discussed under where the Skytrain crosses underneath the viaduct?

I'm guessing the city owns the land below the viaducts?

Suppose I should add some context. Metro and I were musing about the loss of local drinking/dining establishments which have a sort of "underground" feel to them. Taking this one step further, we began discussing how cool it would be to have an industrial-themed drinking establishment (possibly combined club/bar/restaurant) underneath one of the viaducts (or both) at the location where the skytrain line crosses underneath, intentionally integrating the viaducts and the skytrain line into the design. Think about how cool it would be to be able to "overlook" the skytrain line while under the viaduct?

What I kind of had in mind was a 2-3 story structure with a patio across the whole of the roof, as well as an underground level (depending on floor-ceiling heights). Depending on the use each level could serve an individual cliental, or have the whole thing opened up for big nights. Depending on the height of the individual floors, either the first floor would be partially underground, or at ground level with a full floor underneath. The goal would be that on the rooftop patio, if one were tall enough they could reach up and touch the bottom of the viaduct.

Due to the location I have in mind, depending on the design, the building may also have to wrap around one of the viaducts support pillars. To me, this would simply serve to further the unique and interesting experience, but could make the actual design and development of the building a little more complicated.

I've been to several multi-layered "clubs" in both NYC and Toronto, as well as some restaurant/clubs in various locations. Having multiple layers would allow it to serve different clients on the same night. You could have a wedding reception in the upper level and on the patio (catered too by an in-house restaurant), followed by a Deadmau5 event of all things later on in the night in the basement. Follow that the next night with Benny Bennassi opening the whole thing up for his event.

I've got no degrees, but I'd assume being able to run multiple businesses out of one establishment is the most cost-effective use of a single building. In this case both a restaurant and a club. I'd imagine that due to legality reasons, they'd have to be "separate" businesses, but no reason why they can't have the same owner and support each other.

Also, given it's location, and people on here constantly talking about doing something with the viaducts, it could provide that uniqueness it needs to survive and thrive on it's own. I could also imagine it becoming the eastern anchor of a sub-viaduct pedestrian mall/entertainment strip that would run the length of the Georgia Viaduct to the traditional entertainment district.

I have moved the requested posts to this thread.

I was going to mention that I think Plaza 88 in New West is a shining example of what to do with elevated structures in an urban environment. Also, I love Steamworks' too.

Really? Seriously? With the water and Seawall a two minute walk away, people are going to hangout under an overpass? Get serious.

Maybe if there were no parks or activities close by, this would be a good idea. I just don't see it working here.

They do already at the skate park.

During wet days it does provide cover

Baskeball courts would be cool under there as well, along with tennic courts.

ut the nagain, the tram OMC would be nice under there as was originally presented, oh wait, havn't heard much about that project in a while that would improve the entire dowtown core and more!

While creative (and it was posted before), I have to say renderings are really funny because they love to put them full a lot of people "enjoying" the space.

Berlin has tons of bars, restaurants and shops under their viaducts. They are much nicer and wider viaducts though, but I'm sure something nice could be done with the ones in Vancouver, especially given the fact they wouldn't have the same amount of vibration and noise that Berlin gets with trains running on them every 45 seconds.
