Congrats to ABIA for being the 3rd best Airport in North America, 5th best for its size in the world!! Interesting that they mentioned Austin's airport is "uniqually" clean.

ABIA among best airports in the world

Quote:
Austin Business Journal by Vicky Garza, Staff Writer
Date: Monday, November 14, 2011, 1:30pm CST

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport .. has been ranked among the top airports in the world for customer service excellence.

ABIA is one of only 14 airports to be inducted into the first ever Director General’s Roll of Excellence by the Airport Council International. To receive the recognition, an airport must have been listed among the top five in the ACI’s Airport Service Quality survey of over 200 airports worldwide for five consecutive years. ABIA is ranked No. 3 on the latest list.

I read this in the AAS either Sunday or Monday's edition.
Austin airport 3rd-best in North America, 5th in world

Austin airport 3rd-best in North America, 5th in world 5:24 a.m. Monday

Published: 8:52 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport recently was named the third-best airport in North America and fifth-best worldwide in its size category by Airports Council International, based on customer satisfaction surveys.

"Comfortable architecture, an ambiance made distinct with live music and local restaurants, enjoyable art and a super clean terminal distinguish this airport as uniquely Austin," the council's write-up says. Cleanliness is unique to Austin?

Technically, it was AirTran that applied to serve the Austin to Cancun route and it will most likely be AirTran who operates the initial service, although eventually that will change to Southwest.

Is it just me or is Jet Blue making Austin like a mini hub or something? I know people switch planes here coming from Florida to California and vise versa and from what I hear more flights are planned out of Austin from Jet Blue as mentioned possibly a DC flight. So any info on what the future may hold???

Good info. Thanks Lonestar Mike. Also hearing Jetblue might get approval to fly to Reagan in D.C.
The FAA reauthorization bill that Congress is likely to approve would add eight daily flights from Reagan to airports beyond the perimeter (1250 miles).

Quote:
A compromise was also reached on slots at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, opening up eight daily round trips to long-distance flights.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) played a large role in that agreement, conferees said, emphasizing to her colleagues that growing Western states need more flights from Reagan.

It really is a no brainer when you think of the demand for people needing to fly to Austin, the airlines should already be looking at Austin for major expansion. My theory is Jet Blue has been strategically placing direct flights here from the East Coast and the West Coast to make us an eventual hub for the Southern part of the U.S. We are already kinda like a mini hub for them now.

Austin has virtually no chance of ever becoming a major hub with DFW and Houston so close.

We may not be a major hub like Houston or Dallas but we will likely be the largest Airport after those two.
