Came across this regarding the black Board of Trade tower. I wonder when it closed?

Hy’s Prime Rib, magazine advertisement circa 1975. When prime rib dinners were only $4.95. Overlooking the harbour at Hastings & Bute, Board of Trade Tower, Columbia Centre. From the VPL picture file, Vancouver, BC, Restaurants. (possibly signed by artist “M Homsy”) Hy’s Steakhouse is named after Hy Aisenstat, Calgary restauranteur.

Here's a shot of the Board of Trade Building under construction (looks like the short one was built first):

Maybe the gov't is vacating an older building that will be sold to a condo developer?

I respect your points of view, but my main problem with these buildings is their black colour. They look "sooty." In a grey-sky town like Vancouver, why can't they be white, to complement the hotel, and pull that area into a cohesive "unit" so to speak?

I wouldn't miss the entire block if it was torn down.

I think white is a god-aweful colour to have on any building, personally. Especially an office tower. Very few towers can do white good, and even then, I think they'd be better clad silver or 🞵🞵🞵-metal grey granite (FCP, Aon Centre Chicago, etc)

I find the black breaks things up a bit and helps define the central business district. It adds some variety, which I think is good for a dreary-looking city. I really wouldn't mind any colour on the building, so long as it's not white, blue, or sea-foam green, of which we have more than enough.

I wanted to say that, but didn't have the courage, as I thought it would be politically incorrect , but YES, YES, and YES. That block deserves something better.

When I said "white" I wasn't necessarily speaking literally. Silver, 🞵🞵🞵-metal, grey granite would be fine. Except that I find those buildings singularly ugly (for example, the exterior pipes) and would like to see something sleeker and more upbeat.

Oxford Properties Announces Major Lease at 1021 West Hastings to MNP LLP
New Tower to be Rebranded MNP Tower

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Jan 30, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Oxford Properties Group ("Oxford"), the real estate arm of the OMERS Worldwide group of companies, is announcing a significant lease agreement at its office development at 1021 West Hastings in Vancouver with MNP LLP. One of Canada's largest chartered accountancy and business consulting firms, MNP will lease 72,000 square feet of the office tower over nine floors. The building will be rebranded the MNP Tower.

"Oxford is delighted to announce MNP as the first major tenant at our new office development at 1021 West Hastings in Vancouver and to welcome their team to an exceptional office tower," said Blake Hutcheson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Oxford Properties. "All of the organizations involved in the development at 1021 West Hastings are world class, from our partner, CPP Investment Board, to our architects, Kohn Pedersen Fox, to our contractor, Ledcor, and the list goes on. We are very proud to add MNP's name to this list of terrific organizations involved with this project."

Located on the site of Vancouver's historic University and Quadra Clubs, MNP Tower is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2014. Designed by world-renowned architects Kohn Pederson Fox, the 35-floor, 275,000 square foot office tower will have a rare full waterfront view, rising as a striking glass crest to frame the Marine Building to the east and Guinness Tower to the west. At ground level it will retain its historic club facade, while a prestigious entrance will be created within a newly landscaped public green space. The development is designed to LEED Gold Core and Shell.

MNP's Chief Executive Officer Daryl Ritchie said the firm is very excited about the move. "As MNP continues to expand our practice and presence in the Greater Vancouver Area, our commitment to the marketplace has also expanded - as has our need for more office space. We are thrilled to have our name associated with such a leading-edge tower -- a world-class office development with a breathtaking view that is blazing the green trail with sustainability practices. Today, we are proud to announce that it will become home to our team members in Vancouver, as we continue to meet the evolving needs of our growing client base."

"We are very pleased to welcome MNP to this extraordinary development," said Chuck We, Director, Leasing, Oxford Properties. "MNP is a Canadian success story and has repeatedly been recognized as one of the best employers in the country. MNP is particularly focused on service delivery to its clients, and this world class service focus is echoed by Oxford. From first call to final signing, the leasing process was productive and positive and the Oxford and MNP teams worked extremely well together. We look forward to continuing that positive collaboration for many years to come."

The development of MNP Tower is a joint venture between Oxford, who will oversee all aspects of the development and management of the property, and co-investor CPPIB. Together, Oxford and CPPIB co-own a portfolio of office properties across Canada valued at approximately $3 billion, and are currently also developing RBC Waterpark Place in Toronto.

Nice.

Maybe it'll have a logo up top too, although it's rather boring:

Great news, clearly a smaller firm with bigger aspirations. Great opportunity for them to get their name on a major building with only a 70,000sf lease.

Looks like they got snagged out of bentall 3, I wonder how much space they were taking there, hopefully this move is a decent space expansion.

If I may digress for a minute, what's the deal with that short black office tower in the background of the last pic? Just down the street is it's big brother the Sierra Building, but why did they make this one so small? I remember seeing that tower 30 years and shaking my head at how short it was and wondering why. It even looks more ridiculous now.

For sure. And when its sculpted, classy new neighbour goes up, it'll look even more ridiculous than it already does, and uglier, to boot. (I always disliked it)

Ya, demolition is going strong now. To see it you have to go to the back and look at the site from Cordova street.

This part of the building is now half demolished and will probably be gone be the end of the week:

This is getting very exciting. I remember seeing this initial proposal 4 years ago and thinking there was no way it would ever happen.

Sometimes I really love it when I'm wrong.

Just as watching 1133 W. Georgia getting torn down was exciting. Eyesore, begone!
However, I have a better feeling about this project for some reason...
