Atlanta inked the first airport concessions contract for the new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal on Wednesday.

The contract is between the city and Duty Free Americas Peachtree LLC (DFA), which plans to have luxury retail brands in two locations on Concourse F. One section will feature separate storefronts that will include beauty and grooming products, cosmetics and fragrances, tobacco and liquor and other luxury goods. The second area will have Mont Blanc , Emporio Armani, Tag Heuer and Thomas Pink

This marks the 3rd major economic development study either commisioned or underway in the last 90 days. First, the Ft McPherson masterplan developer will be chosen within the next couple of weeks; the Multi-Modal Transit team has already begun its study , while a recent CAP economic impact study projects 15,000 new jobs by 2040.

Yet another study. I often think this is what politicos and planners do when they can't actually fund and carry out a project. I hope we don't become a city of pilot projects.

"When complete in about a year, the tower will house 320 apartments at West Peachtree and 12th Street."

Studies keep the pockets of those politicos and planners plump and primed. Studies are their bestest friends.

So are you advocating jumping into a major project without studying the feasibility of it first? I would like to know which city does things in such an irresponsible manner...

Hardly my point. I would like just a small percentage of all those feasibility studies to be realized. My selves are full of good plans. Unfortunately many seem to think it is done when the plan is done. I am still waiting for the symphony hall (Calatrava anyone?); the multi-modal center; the subway to Northlake, Marietta, Clifton Rd; the Midtown plan; etc.

I propose a study to determine the benefit of jumping into a major project without first studying it's feasibility. Perhaps federal funds are available.

Can anyone convince me that they didn't put the Streetcar in the wrong area?

Maybe it's my Midtown bias but how will ATL residents use this on a daily basis? Maybe there's some advantage for GSU that I'm not noticing.

Like so many of these efforts, the streetcar as planned would probably work if it were tied into a network of others such as a line running from 5 point to Lenox ( in addition to other possible patterns) What makes streetcars so useful in most European cities is that they interlink and are a pleasure to use.

My theory is that the Beltline realizes a solution to CSX/Hulsey in between Cabbagetown and Inman Park is a least a decade off. This streetcar route gets us halfway from downtown to the Beltline alignment, and sets up an infrastructure for repairing and housing the rolling stock (under the Connector). To sell it to the Feds, it needed to have certain selling points (students, tourism, urban renewal, connections to existing mass transit)--those selling points are a lot less obvious for any of the actual Beltline alginment. So we are kind of killing two birds with one stone--getting in place a lot of infrastructure that will one day support the Beltline, plus getting the Feds to pay for (much of) a starter streetcar.

My favorite streetcar alignment remains along 10th street from Midtown Station to Howell Mill (looping around on Brady), but I don't think that one is going to happen soon if ever.
