St. Joseph's Healthcare

New addition to the South-West corner of St Joe's Downtown Campus.
Not too sure what it is exactly (the sign didn't quite clarify this?)

Thanks! This is such an awkwardly layed out Hospital (am familiar w/ the history of the site, so I understand why it's layed out in such a way) but still.
They need to move the ER entrance as it's VERY inconvenient for Emergency Workers and Drivers alike!

Some worthwhile private investment in the city

Local family gives St. Joe’s $5 million for surgical robot

Gary Yokoyama/The Hamilton Spectator
St. Joseph’s Healthcare has received a $5 million donation to purchase one of the world’s most advanced new robotic systems to conduct surgery.

The gift, from the Boris family, the founders of Mountain Cablevision, will be used to buy a da Vinci SI Surgical Robotic System from the United States, along with two state-of-the-art control consoles that allow two surgeons to work in tandem.

It will enable surgeons to perform delicate and complex operations with minimal invasiveness through increased vision, precision, dexterity and control. It uses a combination of 3D high definition imaging and special instruments that respond to the surgeon’s movements through remote consoles.

Jackie Boris Work and her brother Les Boris said their late father. Owen, who founded Cablevision with his wife. Marta, would be pleased with the donation, since he was “a technology guy” who was intrigued by how technology could advance patient care.

Dr. David Higgins, president of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, called it an inspirational gift that “truly has the power to transform care.”

When compared to laparoscopy or open surgery, patients receiving surgery through the new robotic system are expected to have shorter hospital stays, less pain, a decreased risk of infection, fewer complications and faster recovery.

The hospital hopes to its unit up and ready for operations within three months of receiving the system in January.

This is the second major gift from the Boris family this year.
