If anyone is interested, this Thursday there is a public workshop about the open space along side the Sugarhouse Streetcar. Info can be found here: http://shstreetcar.com/files/01262012_PublicOpenHouse1_3.pdf

Just a thought on the airport situation. Wouldn't it be quicker, less disruptive, and more cost efective to just construct the new airport in a different location (still within range of the current runway system)

Where would be build a new airport? The Tooele Valley?

The current airport is in a fantastic, easily-accessible location, and there's not exactly a lot of empty space left in the valley to build an entirely new airport...

I was wondering is anyone could explain this....

They have been putting up the green poles for the Trax power lines in the middle of north temple... but then when you get to about 1900 west there are 3 or 4 Bright yellow ones then they go back to green again.

Does anyone have any clue as to what the significance of the yellow poles are? they look really out of place.

No! i did say still within range of the current setup... I just meant not where the current building is... Hell they could even move the private plane storage and put it just off 2200 west... I'm sure there are a lot of options.

Oh I see what you mean.

That sounds like it would involve shifting significant portions of the airport though...I'm sure that would be more expensive than what is currently proposed especially since it would involve moving parking, access roads, not to mention the TRAX station that's already under construction, etc...

^Though it's worth mentioning that the Trax station under construction right now will be replaced once the new terminal opens in 2018.

This is what Indianapolis did recently. You can see the existing terminal and concourses at the bottom of the picture, they built their new terminal between the runways with a new access from the other side of the airfield. No need for a phased demolition, they just moved everything over to the new terminal once construction was finished:

Salt Lake has obviously taken a different approach, but I can see how something similar could have worked here, building a new terminal between the runways on the north side near the ATC Tower with access from I-215 instead of I-80:

I actually thought of something similar a few months back when we were last talking about an airport expansion. But it wasn't to build on the other side, then demolishing the existing structures. I was more thinking about in 30-50 years out, after Salt Lake gets much bigger and having a double terminal. One on one end and another on the other side with access from I-215. Having a terminal on each end and 3-4 satellite concourses in the middle.

The main terminal used to be located off 2200 W (now the east side of the airport) prior to the 1960's.

Moving the terminal anywhere than it is planned for would be much too costly and would be disadvantageous in many ways. It is much better to have the terminals located in between runways rather than on just one side of the airport. It allows for better flow of air traffic, thus keeping aircraft fuel burn lower and costs lower and flights on time. Down the road, another runway will be built west of the airport where some of the International Center buildings are. The airport already owns some of these buildings and continues to buy up property and buildings as they become available to be able to construct this runway when it is needed.

And as others have mentioned, you would have to construct new access roads, parking lots, etc. if you moved the terminals somewhere else.

Moving the terminal to the north side of the airport only makes it more difficult for most of the public to access. Plus you would have to tear down multiple support facilities (maintenance, cargo, etc.) that are on the north side of the airport and just as important to keeping it running. The airport is in the stages of moving all cargo facilities to the north side of the airport.

I don't see any real advantage to constructing the terminal anywhere else.

That is a dangerous tool to post on this site. Now they are going to get multi page submissions of ideas from a few people.

I don't understand why it would be dangerous? The SLC International Airport is a publically owned facility and I personally think that a significant expansion or remodel on any publically owned facility should take into consideration the opinions and desires of the public.

TRAX train hit by vehicle causes derailment near downtown SLC station

TRAX train hit by vehicle causes derailment near downtown SLC station
Aaron Vaughn, Web Producer
FOX 13 News

SALT LAKE CITY—
A pick-up truck with two people inside ran a red light near 900 South and 200 West
and were hit by a northbound TRAX train Monday afternoon around 5 p.m, according
to the Utah Transit Authority.

A UTA spokesman says the driver is in stable condition and the female passenger
was not hurt. However, the crash caused the train to derail.

UTA's Jerry Carpenter says commuters will have delays for a while UTA crews help
bring the train back on track. UTA said on Twitter it is busing those who had to
evacuate the train.

No. We now have proof that Utah drivers are the worst.
