here are the stats for homicides....click on the year and the number of slots was the number of murders....there is a graph under the statistics tab

im pretty sure overall crime is lower today than it was in the 70's.

I wouldn't trust this source. And, you need to examine RATES (standardized by population) not numbers of incidents. If you compile the official police homicide statistics (collected as part of the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey since 1961), you can see the rates for MB homicides are higher now than in the 1970s. Figures for the CMA or city level are not readily available that far back. In any event, MB rates of homicide peaked at 4.23 in the 70s, but we have seen rates fluctuate higher than this level in the last 5 years. In virtually all years, MB is higher than the national rate. I've included the most recent rates for the CMA for comparison.

However, these are homicide rates, not general crime rates. General crimes are lower today (even in MB) than 40 years ago.

^ was just providing what i had.....i see no reason not to trust them.

anyways, its not important.....a quick look at the numbers shows that the good old days were not really all that good....everyone assumes that crime and murder is an epidemic that has spiralled out of control in recent years.....the real story is that only the media coverage of it has.

murder (and crime) was similar then to what it is now.

this discussion is way off topic.....i just though ti would share that link with the person who asked.

Dream of saving old terminal won't fly

Aviation museum eyes move to site of former airport building

By: Aldo Santin
Posted: 01/24/2012 1:00 AM

HERITAGE Winnipeg has given up its campaign to save the city's old airport terminal from demolition.
Cindy Tugwell, executive director of Heritage Winnipeg, said the effort was doomed from the start because it lacked the support of anyone or any authority willing to champion the effort.

"We couldn't persuade anyone," Tugwell said.
The admission from Heritage Winnipeg comes as the Western Canadian Aviation Museum announces its capital campaign for a new museum facility on the site of the old terminal building.
The aviation museum is holding a news conference this morning, where it will introduce city businessmen Art Mauro and Ross Robinson as co-chairmen of the capital campaign.

It is no secret that renovating is more often than not, cheaper, easier and more environmentally friendly than tearing down and building new. Even Donald Trump has been saying this for decades.

HOWEVER. There needs to be a viable market for the renovation to begin with. Winnipeg has a great stock of buildings to utilize but suffers from ridiculously low lease rates. Much of the Exchange is populated with tenants paying between $4-8/sq ft. This is why we are seeing primarily condo development more than anything. Condo and home prices in general are climbing rapidly and makes the most business sense for the redevelopment of small warehouses into residential.

The problem is finding tenants for the retail space on the main level or finding a business that is looking for a large space to lease so that a building can be redeveloped into a fully commercial space.

If anything, City Hall should be working to encourage more businesses to operate in the downtown core and the rest will follow.

I've been involved with 3 fairly major renovations of 100 year old warehouses into mixed use residential/commercial spaces, and it is certainly not easier, and many would argue not much cheaper, to renovate these old buildings up to modern codes.

The less government-funded projects the better; a true measurment of success is based on private investment. I want to see more quality developments in the future, a lot more multi-family developments including townhomes.

However building new gets you a generic crappy precast concrete box with tiny windows and paper thin walls.

I went to see the district condo display suite on james st not too long ago the realtor pretty much said the outside walls are horrible insulators so the unit leaks heat so its good that all that is included in the condo fees. He also said they'd be crazy to offer a full new home warranty cause it's a heritage building.

I know nothing about building codes etc so I appreciated his honesty but it did make me rethink the notion of living in a hertitage conversion.

Its all give and take. Yes, 12 or 18 inch thick masonry walls aren't the best insulator, however leaving them exposed like that will mean these buildings will never suffer from "sick building syndrome" or mold. They breath naturally, and I would argue the benefits of that versus living in some hermetically sealed up space typical of the newer high efficiency buildings and houses.

As for the warranty... well these buildings have stood for 100 years. They aren't going anywhere, especially after being renovated with updated life safety systems like sprinklers, fire rated assemblies, etc. There is no worry there.

I know posters have made some mention of it being bigger than previously thought (Biff I think pointed this out)

but either way on the front page we have it pegged at 25 stories. Edit perhaps?
I can confirm that the building is 271 ft to the top. There are 25 floors of apartments, a mechanical and two stepped extra roof feature floors.

You can't argue on the construction quality of these old warehouses. They are often neglected, left unheated, have leaky roofs, etc., and they still remain rock solid, ready for conversion. Newer construction will never be able to sustain this same abuse.

You should have seen the 6th floor at the Penthouse block prior to renovation. It was basically covered with a system of tarps and plastic "kiddie pools" to capture the hundreds of leaks from the roof. If was like that for years, and there was minimal damages to the building. A couple rotten roof joists and floor decking, but that's it.

Now that its been renovated, it has a new roof membrane, sprinklers, elevators, fire rated floors/roof. It's basically a brand new building.

I heard about that. Had a couple friends working on that project.

Diagnostic Imaging and the Helipad are located across the street from the new Woman's Hospital on William. It is located in that little indent next to where the emergency department is (the old ambulance ramp).

So the Alt Hotel will be considerably taller than the rendering? The original rendering had 17 floors from what I counted. The Hotel website is now 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 it at Over 20 stories.

^ maybe that is because the hotel is 17 stories above the +/- 3-storey office podium?

That's what I was thinking. Plus just looking at the rendering, the 3 office stories look significantly taller than the hotel stories....that'll probably add quite a bit to the overall height.

Either way...great development.
