Highway 69 was a slow, miserable, dangerous piece of shit and I'm not at all sad to see it go. There need be only one small section, to serve as a reminder to how terrible the old road was.

Not sure what they're going to do with the highway as far as naming goes. Apparently they aren't planning on downloading it because there is no upper tier of government to maintain it as a county road. It may, however, be renumbered as a secondary highway, possibly using the number 669. Or perhaps 666 would be better, because this really was Satan's Highway.

Hwy 11 between Huntsville and North Bay is just as bad as 69, but like 69 it's being fully divided. Both hwy's are starting to look more like Interstates now which makes driving much safer.

I think in the long term they want to download Highway 69. If you read the last page of this link, it outlines that the MTO has approached the Township of Seguin regarding the partial transfer of Highway 69:

http://www.twp.seguin.on.ca/docs/Council%20Minutes/2006/July_4th.pdf

The by-passed section of Highway 69 will get a proper name, won't be designated as either a primary or secondary highway, but will likely remain a 7000-series highway for the interim. The township of Seguin assumed Oastler Lake Road from the MTO, so I believe it is only a matter of time before they get the rest.

Could have called it Highway 469 - of course, it would be the highest number highway in Ontario, but it would make some sense...

It will be 400.

One thing they could do for the next section north of Nobel towards Pointe au Baril is ONLY designate that as 400 (initially) and renumber Shebeshekong Road (an old 69 alignment and currently a 7000-route) as 69, despite not being up to primary standards. At the same time, the old alignments from Oastler Park Road to 559 could also be renumbered, leaving the freeway as only 400.

Ontario Highway 666 once connected Kenora to Reddit. It used to be Highway 128. It was renumbered to 658 in 1985 because the church was all pissy about it.

The province downloaded tonnes of highways to local municipalities in the north even though they don't cover everything. As long as there are no unincorporated gaps in between, it can be done. It simply becomes a road that connects to roads in other municipalities. Most of the downloaded highways in Northern Ontario don't have numbers anymore.

@vid. I have a question -- Do you know, was the little stub of Arthur Street in Oliver & Paipoonge Twp transferred to the township after the Shabaqua Highway opened, or is it still a 7000?

From the new highway to Highway 130, Arthur Street is now part of Highway 130. From there to Twin City Crossroads, it is the responsibility of Oliver-Paipoonge, and from that point east it is the responsibility of the City of Thunder Bay. Both municipalities received funding from the province to improve it as a transition benefit, but that is over now.

I don't think it ever was part of the 7000 series, only the Thunder Bay Expressway is (Highway 7250) and that doesn't include Arthur Street.

It was done once, we can have Highway 666 again. Only this time we'll have electrified route markers that give a powerful shock to anyone who attempts to steal one.

Haha, I do live on a small acreage in a small hamlet just south of Grande Prairie, so in a way I am a bush man as my house is completely surrounded by trees. Though the rodeo ground behind my backyard gets pretty busy in August

I read a post about Ontario's Highway 11 on the TCH twinning thread, so I figured I'd post this. I just updated a webpage for Highway 11 between Huntsville and the Village of Burk's Falls. This section of highway was twinned in stages between 2001 and 2010, and this page features photos taken from various stages of highway construction. I wrote the page with the hope that anyone could follow the sequence of the highway widening without having intimate knowledge of the area.

There is more work ongoing along Highway 11, a new stretch of freeway opened in 2011 between Sundridge and South River. I have taken some photos of that section too, but haven't uploaded them yet, so stretch isn't detailed in this post. Anyways, Highway 11 between Huntsville and Burk's Falls:

A local artist and former Huntsville High teacher has turned his massive property into a huge art display with screaming heads, horses, ghosts, and trees. He's made a stone henge from them, he's built a castle, and tons of web like iron sculpture through the fields and woods. Anyone is free to raom the grounds and last year it was used for Harvest festival.

Skip ahead to 02:00

Perfect stop along the way if anybody is passing by on HWY 11

That's pretty neat. I've actually never noticed the display, and I've been up that section of Highway 11 at least a dozen times. Have to check it out at some point.
