This project was approved by the UDP back in 2000.
The render for the site next to Pacific Central Station looks like the old Tech-Park proposal - it died a long time ago, then the St. Paul's proposal was made - but it looks like St. Paul's is staying downtown.
Maybe the station site will become a smaller satellite hospital.
I second that! Horrible, horrible design for the area. Given the Future Shop building next door, one would have though that this building would have had some funky lighting and / or architectural feature! This little corner is where our main entertainment street meets our main commercial drag (essentially our mini times square), and this is what they allow????
Shame, the old building at least had some interest to it (again note the cool funky underground shops).
This building is a total tragedy. Granville and Robson is becoming the defacto "Times Square" of Vancouver. Yet this dark, colourless, bland building utterly fails to acknowledge the growing prominence of this corner. Indeed, the building seems specifically designed to put a stake through the heart of any potential visual excitement and dynamism that this corner was beginning to develop. But worst of all, if you look closely at the base on the Granville side, you will actually see an arcade. This is inexplicable. Despite the newly-widened sidewalk and the consistent, flush street wall directly to the south, this building introduces a recessed alcove with all its concomittant pillars and dark blind spots.
I actually cannot believe this building is being built. This corner had momentum and this building completely throws cold water all over it.

I don't understand the Robson/Granville proposal. Why, in Vancouver, in 2012, at that intersection, would anyone propose a PoMo building with an arcade...
People should write the architect to ensure this doesn't happen, or the city to reject such a shitty design.
^^I've seen those a while back... those towers would fit much better in Vancouver than in Milan. The foilage-to-soil-depth ratio seems a bit optimistic in the renders tho
For Granville and Robson, the owner is offshore and (probably wisely) chose the path of least resistance in choosing a local architect. For the most part, MCMP designs office buildings and doesn't know retail.
I'm sure once signage is added it won't look so bland.
The Robson & Granville building isn't that bad - and I agree it's probably a "least resistance" type of building and that signage will come and depend on the retailer (note, however, that the Telus Garden condo application showed a tall vertical sign on Robson in its elevations, but it has a much bigger retail space, so its tenant would likely want a massive sign).
There is some interest in the windows on Robson - they angle out and taper east/west.
The arcade and canopies will likely allow some patio tables without narrowing the sidewalk (depending on the tenants they get).
I do agree that the column on the corner is unfortunate, but hopefully it'll be set back enough to be out of the way (unlike the sharp corner on the Future Shop building)
