Glenora skyline site has fencing all over and posters of what seemed to be only one of the shorter towers. Was driving by and only caught a short glance I didn't see what has happened on the site yet.

And im loving the edm clinic south building btw. Has a major impact on that corner.

^ They're only building one tower to start, and the plan is to start construction on it this Spring.

That is the project on 142nd with the poor marketing and only a couple units sold?

Yeah I do agree that CityPlace hasn't developed as well as people first though, though the tower-portion of the condos are designed relatively well; the ground-floor interaction with the street is where this project fails. Hopefully Ultima/Optima does better than CityPlace and has various retail bays in its podium, as well as massing that continues the street facade in a smooth fashion.

^ The tower portion is all I was referring to. All I have seen of the towers in that area of Toronto are aerials. Yes the podium portion looks like it will continue the west side of 103rd quite nicely.

I really hope someone can post a pic soon... this one's money IMO.

illumiNITE Design Competition and the Alley of Light

The Alley of Light is a hidden public space within the downtown core. With illumiNITE, the Alley of Light pocket park located directly North of Sobeys on Jasper Avenue (off 104th Street) will be transformed into an enlightened gallery space. This competition will challenge participating teams to design a structure, sculpture or art piece that incorporates the element of light. Eligible entries will be displayed on Saturday, February 25, 2012, creating a vibrant and animated gallery after sunset. With this competition, the light sculptures will bring life, vibrancy and warmth to an otherwise dark and lonely public park. Competition judging will occur during the evening gallery with the winners announced at the after-party. Gallery take down will occur Sunday, February 26.

If you are up to the challenge, a brief description of no more than 150 words and a sketch of the light design are required for entry! Entry submissions are due Friday, January 13, 2012 to the email: [email protected]. More information about the illumiNITE event can be found on the Edmonton on the Edge website at www.eote.ca. Eligible sculptures will be notified by Friday, January 20, 2012.

Guiding Principles for Eligibility:

• Teams of up to 5 members.
• Light sculptures or light structures must be an original design.
• All components of the design, including the lighting element, must be able to withstand cold temperatures for the duration of the setup, evening gallery and judging.
• Teams must be able to transport their light structure to the gallery site on the date of the event, and should be able to set up with minimal assistance.
• Power will be provided up to 120V, and can accommodate approximately 10 light fixtures on the sculpture. However, INNOVATE! There are various light emitting elements at your disposal.
• Materials are the choice of participants, though all are strongly encouraged to recycle, reuse and/or demonstrate principles of sustainability.
• The competition will accommodate up to 15 sculptures – designers/applicants will be notified of the success of their submissions.
• No open flames will be permitted.
• Teams will also be responsible for set up and take down, with minimal assistance and within a time frame of 2 hrs. Security will be provided for the Saturday overnight.

Prizes: Prizes will be awarded to the top judged light sculptures and structures.

Judging: A panel of guest judges will be visiting Saturday evening to view and judge the competition pieces.

I still cannot bring myself to liking the design of the Glenora Skyline project. Sure the glass is nice, but combined with the angled concrete work and podium pods, it makes the tower look like 1960's science fiction mixed with 1980's architecture. And it's orange. ORANGE

Almost like a mix between Sturgeon point villas in St. Albert and Habitat 67 in Montreal, with a glass cylinder coming up in between.

This spot would be absolutely perfect for one or two 10-15 story condo towers, with lots and lots of retail, and perhaps some town homes to make up any further demand.

Not my first choice for design, either. The podiums remind me of that Capitol POS across 109 St from Save-On. However, there will be a good amount of retail and hopefully the new residents can help breath some life into a corner with a lot of unappreciated potential... i.e. something besides a foot clinic. All-in-all two steps forward, one step back, I suppose.

Not to be negative for no reason, but I base my following comment on the news reports of a large number of failing windows in curtain wall condo construction in Toronto, and the number of faulty contractors and building faults in Alberta..

I do wonder how long the curtain-wall windows on this project will last.

After a long discussion with a glazing professional and envelope engineer, we all feel that those reports are doomsday generally speaking. We spec a lot of curtain wall, mind you quite high performance versions of it, but we expect 20-30 years from it.

In my opinion everything in the glenora project looks great EXCEPT that angled concrete first few floors... Ruins everything!!! Its disgusting who the hell thought of that?! Makes the project look like futuristic mayan ruins or something.

I Agree, The failure rate usually has more to do with the individual contractors that have little or no experience installing the systems. That and the fact that there was /is a condo boom in TO and you are getting half assed contractors and trades to busy to spend the time needed. We see it here as well. Don't forget the problems Vancouver went through a few years ago and we are seeing that here as well.
