Definitely agreed. Although I'm sure we'll still get some good posts, and of course, gorgeous photo threads.

Thanks for the updates and insight. BEFORE YOU GO - please, what area of the city is pictured in your "Unseen Atlanta Part 2" photo number 8? Or, someone please jump in and identify this intriguing area. Also, there are no photos in your Charlotte link. I'm curious as to what all the commotion over Charlotte is though I understand it's a bit like Atlanta was in the 70's and 80's - lots of boom and boosterism but still trying to find a unique texture and identity.

Sorry about the Charlotte photos...I think I removed them. Charlotte is an impressive sunbelt metro for 1.8 million people. It is one of the new leaders in the south and for development for metros under 3 million people, and can be compared to Austin and Nashville. It's actually got a lot going on, and lots of amenities for a city its size. It has much of what Atlanta has, but I still don't think it can necessarily be compared. I like Uptown, the South End, Dilworth, Myers Park, and Elizabeth, but I really don't care for the rest of the metro, which sprawls as much as Atlanta with a quarter the amount of people. Wasn't in Atlanta in the 70s or 80s, but I believe the two cities are too different economically and culturally to compare. Atlanta has a lot of older areas with warehouse districts and smokestacks and old brick whereas Charlotte is almost entirely "new". Charlotte's downtown [Uptown] is quite active and features a lot of restaurants, some stores, a movie theater, and a substantial amount of bars/nightclubs. People in that metro are more excited about going Uptown than the average Atlantan is about going downtown or Midtown.

Hilarious? More like ignorant...your immaturity is showing.

That type of crap exists for every recent Olympics.

^^^ 100%

I'll take a "commercialized" Olympics(that paid off and made money for local companies) an day. Atlanta came out ahead, probably, compared to other host cities.

Yes, I agree with you!! May not have been everyone's cup of tea, so to speak, but it didn't leave the city straddled with debt in its aftermath. That's good news no matter how you look at it, or categorize it (commercialized, tacky, country, etc.). A small profit is better than a huge loss. And it was thanks to the level of commercialization with sponsorships.

Hey guys, new to the discussion. Has anyone heard anything about realigning 12th street between W. Peachtree and Crescent to make 12th a straight shot from Piedmont to Williams?

I heard there was a possibility of realigning 12th between Spring and W. Peachtree but that doesn't solve the jog at Crescent and will create a job at Spring.

Makes sense to me to fix the problem now before the combination of Skyhouse and 77 12th Street makes any realignment impossible.

I've love to see 12th straightened out, looking at the maps they could actually do it now and only lose some parking lots in the realignment. I wish they'd go ahead and just widen it while they can. Then just continue it over the connector (anything that bridges the connector is a plus), and let it be a major thoroughfare through the Turner complex, you could even easily carry it through to cross with Atlantic Drive and State St. and tht would tie it in with both Atlantic Station and GA Tech.

While Techs at it I wish they go ahead and do for 4th and 3rd (Bobby Dodd) streets what they did with 5th. A couple more of those pedestrian friendly bridge parks over the connector would really make a huge difference in tying those areas together.

Just a quick photoshop showing where an aligned and widened 12th street might run and cross the connector. Turner actually needs this sort of improved access.

Also just for giggles, I went ahead and dropped in a combined 3rd and 4th street bridge/park for Tech.

You could even continue that deck park all the way up to 5th Street. From what I've seen of Atlanta from these threads and elsewhere online, it seems anything to minimize the impact of the Connector would be good for Atlanta.

Let's keep dreaming bigger!

Hook up 8th Street with a bridge across the connector and a bridge linking 6th street diagonally across with Biltmore/6th(?) also. Can you imagine how much easier it would become to cross the connector with all of these additional bridges? Of course you would be emptying into Tech, which the school might not appreciate too much.

This would only help with pedestrian connections. 4th and 3rd street on the map appear to connect across Tech. However these roads do not actually have car access across them. They all dead end and are purely pedestrian paths at some point. This would create great connections from Tech to Midtown for the pedestrian, but not really help much traffic wise. I do however like the idea.

I love the idea of more bridges... but for the sake of keeping things simple, I'm just pushing for a realignment of 12th street. haha. I can already see a stream of cars popping the curb at 12th and Crescent. Watch out pedestrians!

But seriously, I don't know why straightening out 12th street wasn't the first thought of the developers. It just make sense to even things out for ease of travel. Leaving the road disjointed creates YEARS of problems and the land is there to make the adjustments.

It is being realigned. It was a condition of their DRI. It's even shown on their plans. Just Google them and you'll see it.

Rendering of the new CDC building on Buford Highway. It's under construction and up to about the 2nd floor already. Expected completion is Spring 2013.
