It kind of looks like it. That would be a nice touch.

Robson square would be a perfect place for a Rockafeller style Christmas tree.

Was in there last week. Very tasteful and not overdone to any extent.

Is it just me, or is the interior fit-up of the tower moving at a glacial pace?

Yup. Our receptionist even says so - she stares out at the tower all day.

When will the "rain drop" lighting feature be turned on?

I've been looking for signs of an installation - haven't seen anything. I doubt that it would be inside the curtain wall (?), although it could be - I expect it to be down the "gutter" on the south and north sides.
If West Pender Place is any indication, it may be installed well after completion - so still a long ways off.

Right you are. The Shaw tree is pathetic...as always. Dumb location too.
Logic dictates that since Robson Square was the centre of gravity for the Olympic outdoor festivities, then why not continue to use public venues that were designed for public celebrations. Hell...have a Minora too if they want but Robson Square should be the place for skating, tree-lighting and outdoor concerts.

In addition, why not have the Santa Claus Parade end at Robson Square with Santa lighting the tree every year.

Back during planning and discussion, remarks were made that there would be a "twenty to thirty story" raindrop lighting effect on the facade of the building. Details were vague however.

Notwithstanding the many comments made in this thread, I do not recall seeing a single reference to the aformentioned lighting feature in any official render or document posted here.

See the following comments from the rep for IBI/HB Architects in the DPB minutes from Feb 26, 2007 (Delirium posted this earlier in the thread):

Quote:
Mr. Toderian sought clarity on the photovoltaic solar cells and lighting on the buildings. Ms. Heyvaerts stated that they have a lighting consultant who came up with a scheme for lighting the building at night. The system will use LED lights and will be used to simulate rain drops on the building elevation. There will also be photovoltaic solar cells that operate the blinds so that they will drop automatically when the sun hits the windows.
I couldn't find anything more helpful in the Committee Report though - hopefully this is still on.

Instead, the tower flares out as it ascends, creating a distinctive sculptural form with canted facades. At night the high performance curtainwall will be lit up with LED light displays. The top of the building will be lit up with changing colour LEDs while the northwest corner will have a vertical column of LED lights to create a “soft trickling raindrop effect,”.
From an old article " Height of Luxury by Cheryl Mah. Posted in this thread by vanman. The information for that quote is from Hilde Heyvaerts, an associate with IBI/HB Architects.

I asked one of the top guys on the project about the lighting feature, and he said he was pretty sure it was still going ahead.

Thank you for bringing the oral comments in the UDP minutes to my attention. But I still wonder why the lighting effect has not been depicted in any render or printed plan. I suppose not every external feature (even one as dramatic and aesthetically important as a "raindrop" light column) is included in a building's renders.

I recall that article. At the time, I questioned the author's accuracy by pointing out that the northwest corner hardly seems a feasible location for a light column. But I am not an engineer or architect.

Either way, I do hope the lighting effect is installed somewhere on the building, in accordance with IBI/HB's statements made before the UDP.
