that skyline view from liberty state park is pretty neat.

speaking of joisey, here is a view from mountain road/troy towers in weehawken from last saturday

I love how 1WTC and the ESB line up north to south. They kind of act as a link between downtown and midtown.

The Jersey side is getting a pretty good skyline, in its own right.

The multicolored "christmas tree" lights on this tower at night are fantastic. Good to see something original going on.

In the last Carlos photo you can see the cladding missing a few rows because of the side crane mounts. Can I ask a silly Q. What is the purpose of the side mounted crane on this building? I've seen the 2 top cranes hoist steel from the ground...so what does this one do??? Thank you. And thanks to everyone with these great photos.

Dumb Question but do they judge the tower height from the basement levels, where the foundations are. Or, ground level, like lobby level?

Sea level. Sea level is 0 feet. Everything up would count.

I believe(if I remember correctly) that it is used to bring the rebar and other things for the core.

For architects, engineers and anyone involved in the construction project, PANYNJ datum (300' below mean high tide); for the rest of the world, main lobby floor (11'2" above mean high tide). Oh, forgot it, and for the CTBUH people, north entrance (7' 10" above mean high tide)

It's pretty simple yet made so complicated. A building in Denver (mile high city) for example wouldn't be measuerd from (the actual) sea level, or that'd make it the tallest in the world. So buildings are mainly measured from the lobby up to the spire (not antenna). Sea level is just an expression (or 'variable') used to represent the number 0.
