I would think the Casino would impact more the restaurants/pubs/coffee.
Casinos may draw money from people and put them in the provincial coffers, which is not bad, far from it. Casino's don't bring the spinoff they were so vaunted to bring as gamblers tend to spend their money — and not shopping. The ones who come to Regina's casino are also probably more frugal than the ones going to vegas.

Casinos are merely a way for governments to enforce a tax on the stupid.

And sometimes a casino is just another nighttime entertainment option. Not everyone who goes is a — addict. It adds something else to do in Regina, so I'm thankful we have it.

I would like to see Regina open a new mall in the suburbs or renovate an existing one on the scale of the Cross Iron Mills mall in Calgary (or close to it). I understand the frustration with the big box store mess in the east end, but what other options are there in Regina?
Your forgeting about the north end....Normanview mall has been converted to a semi-big box area that is way busier now than it ever was as a mall.

Sherwood Village is now in the process of being converted as well...

NorthGate Mall - in the early 90's with Walmart it was booming.

My prediction - once Target opens in Northgate it will be a booming mall again.

I just think the article is all about how u should go to the U of S if u want a decent job apperently, which just degrades the Uof R. So students graduating highschool in regina are like well i should just go to the U of S, to me thats what the article is saying.
Actually if you really want a job after graduating SIAST is the best option. They keep enrollment at levels that gives students the best chance of employment. Universities simply pump out grads.

Go to any Grade 12 class in Sask and take a vote today and the majority will say they are going into apprenticeship now not university. It has flipped in the past 20 years.

Both universities have had enrollment problems in some key programs.

And from a hiring point of view - the only people who care what school you went to have a "bias" because they went there - everyone else just wants you to have the related degree.

The same firms recruit hard at the U of R, U of S, U of C and U of A. The only real difference is if you have co-op experience which gives some students from the U of R a leg up.

Yeah, that —, but it is true that when HR tends to filter resumes it's University > SIAST. Sad because some of the better people I've worked with only went to SIAST.

Walking down the plaza this morning I noticed that most of the reflective lane markers are chipped in some manner. Snow removal?

The plaza is nice. I like the lights on the sculptural trees and they've added some lighting to the trees as well. Although I would have gone with a different pattern. It's switching between red and yellow. I think I would have gone with white -> green -> yellow/orange -> off to simulate the seasonal changes for real trees.

I wonder why they decided to nip the points off of the balconies. I don't think it significantly altered their appearance and now they're smaller than before.

^^^ I had the unfortunate opportunity to go downtown last week, specifically to businesses on Scarth Street. I was able to look at the plaza for the first time in person. I was completely underwhelmed. For the rest of the day, I kept asking my colleagues "we spent $12,000,000 on this?" Most seemed to agree with questioning why the money was spent on effectively neutering the core of downtown.

I believe the reason was for safety as the concrete was starting to chip off a bit. The old balcony shape had a better visual rhythm to them, as blocky as they were they fit better with the massing of the structure. Now the hotel is just looking fat and blocky with delicate rails that look out of place. I'm reserving full judgement until it gets painted, but so far it's not looking too promising to me.

Give it time. Plazas them selves aren't necessarily attractions in their own right. If you think about it a plaza is just concrete with some fancy features. Its the events and programming, which draw in people, and draw is more people etc. If the time and care was taken to make a accessible inviting square (which it was) then things will take care of its self.

At least be fair to the square and give it a full summer of operation before passing judgement.

I would also add that all the great plazas in European centres are just a concrete square with minimal greenery and architecture, other than the odd fountain but the main thing that they have to attract people, that our plaza sorely needs are restaurants, pubs and coffe shops directly around the permimeter with patios for each. Now that is what ours sorely needs in the future to suceed as the places on Scarth Street Mall and Scarth Street are not directly in contact with the square to have a direct impact.

The plaza was constructed with aesthetics in mind. Which is somewhat of a first for our city. I appreciate the idea of the plaza and truly believe that come summer, the events and gatherings will more than make up for the amount of money spent on the plaza. I am confident that the creative side of Regina's people are already scheming in full force on how to use the massive and unique space provided to them. I too would love to see private investor take up the front space along the plaza, to add a bit of life.. however, things like that take some time to accomplish in reality. I bet there are people anxiously coming up with how to make their ideas for restaurants and shops come to fruition. I for one would love to get in on some action down there.

Also, wouldn't lululemon compliment the plaza very nicely? Get the active people of our city using the space as well. Have outdoor yoga sessions on the plaza in the summer. The ideas for what the plaza could and will be used for are absolutely endless. I for one would love if an electronic music event were to be held down there as well. The light shows would be absolutely spectacular.

And remember, it is up to US to come up with ideas for how we will use this space, as it was created for that purpose specifically, to give the people of regina a space to collaborate collectively on just about anything.
