The concept of a forum is to allow the exchange of ideas and conversation. If one aspect of a conversation does not interest you, you are always free to move on. Questioning the discussion of others is both juvenile and counterproductive.

Buuuut...the topic is development in downtown Los Angeles. And since there is no proposal about Forever 21 coming into downtown LA, then there is no need to talk about off topic things. If the topic is the NBA Playoffs and someone comes in and talks about the weather in China, then something isn't quite right.

I would say, in the absence of much development, a lot of discussion here is about potential/fantasy development situations that we'd like to see in DTLA, and being that retail is an important component of development, speculating on Forever 21 is a perfectly valid discussion.

It seems like you missed the discussion.

Someone is proposing a department store in downtown LA.

The discussion is related to which store that will be, in downtown LA.

But you know what is off topic? Hijacking a discussion to talk about how the topic doesn't interest you.

but is forever 21 even a "department" store? it's aimed at such a limited set of shoppers, & its product mix is----quite naturally, based on the store's name----aimed at younger women, so it seems too limited to earn the title of dept store. btw, my daughter complained about the quality of at least some of the clothes she's bought there. but you get what you pay for. so I'm not sure if adding that store to broadway would be a really big step forward. still, it would be better than all the slumlord swapmeets now on the street.

brigham yen mentioned that the owners of macys plaza are thinking of doing a makeover of their mall. unfortunately, they may be saying "but why??! We just spent $$ a few yrs ago to redo parts of it!!"

these pics are from the company that did remodel the walls in the mall. they used the type of shiny laminate that I associate with desktops

^ dark brick mixed with a yellowish color, mixed with shiny two tone laminate. ....that looks like a desperate mall in some city in missouri or Tennessee.

Will the Jags be LA's next NFL team?

If Khan is welcomed as the franchise's next owner, the next question will be how committed he actually is to keeping it in Jacksonville with Los Angeles actively trying to lure a team back to a market that lost the Rams and Raiders following the 1994 season. Jacksonville has frequently been mentioned as a franchise that could potentially be relocated.

I understand that the city of jacksonville has a lease agreement with that team that would make it extremely $$$ for them to move anywhere else. I don't recall the details, but the amt was so huge that it would end up like a poison pill for the owner or anyone who wants to buy & move the team.

i dunno if any makeover would save macy plaza. what, some new paneling and signage is like throwing makeup on a pig. place needs to have a hole blasted in it and redone from scratch, all stores on the outside facing the street.

A makeover did wonders for Santa Monica Place. Of course they put some serious $ into that, converting it into an outdoor plaza.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House Rumored to Replace Bank of America in Downtown LA

Posted on November 21, 2011 by Brigham Yen

It is rumored that Ruth's Chris Steak House will replace the former Bank of America branch at Wilshire and Grand in Downtown LA

There are three different sources who all wish to remain anonymous that have informed me that Ruth’s Chris Steak House will be replacing the former Bank of America branch located at 600 Wilshire Blvd. The approximately 9,000 square foot space is currently vacant and sits in the middle of a growing restaurant scene at Wilshire/Grand Ave where the extremely popular Bottega Louie is only one block south at 7th/Grand and the soon-to-open Industriel is only one block north at 6th/Grand. This means that if/when this space is activated by a restaurant, it will act as a solid bridge and pedestrian connection between all the activity on 7th Street with 6th Street to the north making this stretch of Grand Ave much more vibrant than it is today.

One of the most attractive features about this location is the former ATM location for Bank of America on the Grand Ave side (right next to the back exit of Chipotle), which is set back far away from the sidewalk. I believe, even without seeing the official renderings yet, that this will become a remodeled outdoor patio for Ruth’s Chris, which will give Grand Ave a much more lively feel when diners are seated outside. Another reason why this will help bridge the activity on 7th with a new scene forming on 6th.

Its not a question if theyre a department store or not.

Are they a traditional one, with a toys section, a bedding section, a diner and so forth?

No. But those kinds of department stores dont really exist anymore.

As I said, their Fresno store is larger than the anchor JCPennys in the same mall.

They have expanded to sell mens items, makeup, purses, maternity items, plus sizes etc etc

"Later that year, Forever 21 opened a store in Bakersfield, California in the 94,000-square-foot (8,700 m2) spot that was once held by Gottschalks in the Valley Plaza.[7] On April 2, 2011 Forever 21 opened what was then their largest store in the chain at 150,000 square feet (14,000 m2) in Fresno, California at another former Gottschalks location in Fashion Fair Mall. Another Gottschalks conversion in Modesto, California at Vintage Faire Mall, is set to open in August and will be 154,000 square feet (14,300 m2) over three levels, making it the largest in the chain."

Right now, theyre really the ONLY department store chain that is expanding.

And having their two biggest stores be in the central valley wont last for long.

I'd bet money on the next downtown department store being a Forever 21.

even if it costs money to break a lease agreement with the city of jax, the franchise instantly becomes worth hundreds of millions more by:

1) not being in jax
2) relocating to los angeles
3) being in a new stadium

the jags in particular would stand to benefit the most from a move to LA. theyd go from the very bottom of the barrel to instant national spotlight. no team has more potential for upward mobility. i wouldn't totally rule them out as one of the teams that packs its things and heads to farmers field.

I agree with SteffJeff. Its expected the Jags would double in value just moving from Jacksonville to LA. And breaking the lease would not be the only cost. I am sure the other NFL owners will charge a relocation fee........the LA market is the second largest market in the country. Its a huge win whichever owner pulls it off.

Having said that, the new Jags owner will have a big battle on his hands making it happen........so would any other owner.....like the Rams or the Raiders. It really depends how much an existing NFL owner is willing to go through to get to LA.

Why is AEG or the city not looking at building more convention space on Fig Central/South? Nothing is ever going to happen there.

People on here say it's a dept store but its not.. its just a retail chain that has gone REALLY BIG. while others are sticking to traditional small stores.. XXI has recently been aiming for a department store feel, but IT'S NOT. And it's for men too not just women.. 21Men. And i actually like the clothes they sell.. its very trendy and i haven't been disappointed with the style of clothes they sell.

Anyways no XXI isn't a dept store... its exactly the same as the retail chains Express, New York & Company, H&M etc etc... XXI just happens to open bigger than usual retail stores.

What does JCPennys or Nordstrom do to make them department stores than the new giant Forever 21s are not doing...?

Is it the fact that they sell dishes and stuff? Because with that definition, Target is a department store.

Department Stores aggregate clothing from multiple brands. XXI is just one brand. Target is a department store.

Brigham's blog has the latest on the Hotel Clark renovation. According to him it will become part of the King & Grove chain of boutique luxury hotels. No word yet on opening date.
