wow. these things will dominate our skyline forever... and we thought ICE was gonna make a huge impact, what about these!!!

It'll be fine. The skyline will survive our worst fears and keep on keeping on for a long time. It's just going to change up. It's been doing that as long as the city ever existed.

I agree that it would have been brilliant had the city approved a tall, narrow flatiron but in the end it may not matter. If the building looks great and the cladding and illumination is fantastic, in time few will pause to think about its odd shape. If anything, they'll find it distinctive. I think it's still a great design. I'm more concerned about how those twin 70s will look.

Think about how mad the peeps steveve's age back in 1967 when the first steel and glass TD Towers went up must've been.

No more Scotiabank Tower, no more Commerce Court.

Times change...

I'd focus on densifying the rest of Vancouver before worrying about cramming more stuff into downtown. I want more levels of retail at grade, more terraces, more hanging gardens, etc, not necessarily more density. At no point do I ever want to sacrifice our unique urban form in an attempt to emulate Manhattan.

I recently heard from a pretty good source that Signature will show up after Block 37 (the block west of Spectra and Quartz) is wrapped up, which is no big surprise. I also heard 65 storeys tentatively, but these things are always up in the air, especially at such an early stage.

Oh yeah, the first TD towers looked ugly, dominating and completely out of scale with the rest of the buildings downtown when they were built, but now they are more or less undistinguishable in the skyline. I agree, times change, and skylines must change along with them. Although it is unfortunate that the waterfront skyline may look one dimensional and bland, since it is, and will probably continue to be the most popular view for postcards and such. Generally I don't think your average person will care though. Plus, the benefits of the continued development of these formerly unused lands with taller and taller buildings will definitely outweigh any visual disruptions in my opinion.

I see, thanks. I also don't think there will be a change in heights from the 65 storeys originally planned (despite the current push for more height and "tallest" this and that), because then Signature would be disproportionate to the others in Cityplace and the lot would no longer form the nice pyramidal shape that is seen in some of the "future" renders.

Nice to hear that Signature Tower is on the foreseeable horizon. Even though I find most of the Cityplace towers to be architecturally decent (when analyzed individually), I would hope for something more distinct and bold for the "Signature Tower". *Sigh*, too bad Cityplace wasn't developed by Westbank.

No, I would say Tridel has maximized the use of the site. Of course, everyone would like a flatiron here however, the reality is Tridel is in the business of making profit and a 75 storey tower with a square footprint is much easier to divvy up into sellable investor units than a 50 storey flatiron. (taking into the density stays the same)

i missed it too.. makes sense now.. but i wasn't exactly thinking full on flat iron, but something that starts out like a flat iron, and tapers to the top to a slimmer profile.. like a slope.

I did miss the article however, I'm not convinced " trianglur footprint" is any more than a euphemism for a trapezoid.

A trapezoid form would of distinguished the building nicely as well.

I agree, a tall trapezoid shaped building like Burano but with that facade design would have looked awesome.

Menkes' 1 York/90 Harbour looks promising though, and the curves should add some more interesting shapes to the Southcore area.

My guess would be in Yorkville. I'm not 100% sure but I think I remember reading somewhere that 1255 Bay Street was for sale. Maybe Lanterra purchased these two ugly properties, south of the new FS. Other possibilities would be the parking lot north of the Coach Bus Terminal or the lot on Bay beside the Habour Commissions Building (not sure if that's taken?).

South-West corner of Bay & College could hold a very large twin tower if you demolish the two small office buildings.

That small building (Bay Street Hotel) being retiled at Bay & Elm plus some adjacent lots.

Elm consolidation on the east side of Bay.

Bay and Gerrard (south east corner); though probably not a terribly tall project.

Huge empty lot at Wellesley between Bay and Yonge in a partnership with Morguard. Two large condos and a rental?

Cumberland garage immediately south of the Four Seasons.

The string of houses on Sultan street (west of Bay) is close enough to be advertised as a Bay street location.

I didn't include anything near City Hall as we've already seen proposals near it get chopped significantly in size. The bus depot is TTC (therefore government) owned and would take 5 years to sell as every department/level of government gets a chance to bid on it first.

Long-shots include 45 Bay (tough to rezone) and the Westin Convention Center locations.

Looks like Lanterra is going to redevelop the Sutton Place Hotel on Bay Street. Insider information at UT is not clear. But it looks as though Lanterra is planning to gut the inside of the hotel, and add floors on top.

Not clear how big this redevelopment will be, but I suspect it can't be super huge, the bones on the old Sutton Place can't be strong enough for even something 160 meters tall.

Not quite what I would call huge. Also, missed the obvious 60 Harbour in my list of locations for large towers on Bay. Lots of space in this lot for twin residential and a large floorplate office building.
