That's complete bullshit.

Another aspect of Toronto favoritism. "Let's spend billions on shit we don't need to spend billions on, fuck the rest of the country!"

Winnipeg's 1999 hosting efforts were a bit disrespectful to PASO, to be honest. You host a continent, and you put people up in people's houses, really? Toronto's plans are more appropriate than what Winnipeg put together.
im sure it is more popular in south america, but its still a third rate competition....it is essentially not televised in canada or the US and the athletes are far from olympic calibre.

the only reason this is a big deal this time is because its toronto.

feds gave winnipeg 35 million...how much to toronto?....10-15 times that?

Funny thing is if you ask 9/10 people in Toronto where the games are this year they would have no idea. But they sure think its a big deal that the games are coming to Toronto.

The only reason this is even remotely important is that it is allowing Toronto a dry run at the 2024 olympics, which they are going to get snubbed for anyway because it will be "America's turn"

I think Toronto is using it as a test to see if we are viable as an Olympic Host City.

Our Transportation infrastructure is not up to par, so this could help get us on the right track with the Airport Express Train and the Spadina Line. - Maybe if we're lucky a portion of the Eglinton line could be opened in time for the games <-----( I doubt it though - so don't get mad at me for suggesting it - I know it won't happen. - good grief)

Context Development's next project coming soon to King West. Looking forward to this new project. OMG, too exciting can't wait to see the design.

Based on the presentation given at the recent Community Meeting, the proposed building will now extend from 620 King all the way to Adelaide Street and will contain about 230 units. The structure will step up in height from both King and Adelaide streets to a maximum height of 18 floors (about 65 metres) right in the middle of the block. Building heights will be much lower on both King and Adelaide. It appears that this mid-block step-up will allow for some very generous outdoor spaces for the penthouse suites. It's also worth noting that the structure will not be a simple slab running from street to street. Instead, there is considerable articulation in the building that should reduce the impact of such a wide structure.

On the ground, there is to be an extensive series of mid-block pedestrian links from Bathurst, King, Adelaide and Portland. This interior block treatment was very impressive and obviously some great care was taken in the planning. There would be green space, tree preservation and walkways that go beyond the typical utilitarian design found in the area. The ground level treatment of the building includes two floor height archways and mid-block retail spaces. The lower portion of the building would be done in brick with the upper floors using a more articulated precast cladding. Full details of that portion of the building were not available for the presentation.

Based on the presentation, there is clearly some interesting cooperation going on between the three developers looking to build on the block (111 Bathurst and the adjacent parking lot owned by Plazacorp), local building owners and the city. Adam Vaughan mentioned the possible use of a zoning mechanism that would enable the creation of an exclusive block plan that could prevent any excess mid-block height to be later used as a precedent at any future OMB hearings. This might allow for the addition of more mid-block green space to be included.

Well, the Feds made a mistake only giving Winnipeg $35 million. The fact is that latin America increasingly matters to Canada and its in our national interest to stop ignoring our continent. Rio spent billions when they hosted in 2007. Spending miniscule amounts just isn't going to cut it these days.

Your contention that these athletes are far from Olympic calibre tells me that you've never watched the Pan American Games. The only truth is that Canada/US send there developmental teams in swimming and track. If you look at the rest of the field from across America, there are a ton of world record holders, Olympic medalists, and rising stars that attend.

Just a little heads up guys, I posted this in the Vancouver section but I should post it here too.

Bjarke Engels (BIG) is working on at least one building in all three of Canada's major cities. Knowing his past work, and having seen the designs, these will be very unique and architecturally stunning buildings.

Just to get an idea into what BIG does take a look through their website.

When you said "all three of Canada's major cities" it actually took me a couple of seconds to realize what cities you were referring to. Clearly you meant Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, but given its dramatic level of growth and development in the last decade, it's easy to forget that Calgary is only about half the size of the smallest of those Big Three.

Given Calgary's young and brash attitude as one of the "new class" of major Canadian cities, I'm kind of surprised that it's not also in the hunt for one of Engel's bold designs.

Baffling statement.
Toronto contributes a disproportionately high amount of tax $ to the feds. Toronto get's screwed over by Harpo and McSpendy. This is nothing new.

What do Toronto Taxpayers get out of an event no one cares or even knows about? Now, what might be interesting is to discuss how this is an example of corporatism gone wild.

Mysteriously vague "Shuter Street Condos" project I just found on architecture unfolded's portfolio. It's placed right after (Cityzen and Fernbrook's) Ion Condos, so I assume it's a current proposal (?).

According to Urbanation, there's a 33 storey proposal by Queensgate Developments for the North-East corner of Dalhousie/Shuter. The yellow townhouses in the rendering matches the ones there in that location on Google Maps. Looks like this should be the proposal.

Not a pretty tower, but this is just a preliminary sketchup.

Yeah, this is a pretty lame looking tower at the moment. Although it's still decent height and infill for the location. Hopefully the project design goes through some alteration when details are revealed.
