Nice shots Josh!

I had been wondering what the A&W site was for a while...As for Super Store they have been changing their color scheme on their stores lately from the classic red and blue to the new "Joe" orange and white...they even re-painted the gas bar here in Moncton to match! haha.

Downtown being all dug up has been super annoying this summer...cant wait til that's over with!! I don't think Ive ever seen another city close off its main street for the entire summer before

I just hope it doesn't result in businesses closing up and moving to the Granville area etc.

I don't know if you noticed but a large vacant building in the SSide Business Park has been filled as of late by a few tenants, one of which moved from Cornwall.

They had pedestrian walkways available the whole summer. They closed off another part before when they did phase #1. I am very surprised with the amount of development in summerside this year though!

SPENCER DRIVE UPDATE

I finally got out to take a few photos of the Spencer Drive construction. As you can see progress is being made.

This next photo is where phase two of the project will be taking place on the the east side of the development.

Great shots braymondg! It is progressing very quickly, I would estimate some stores will be open by January.

Oh, and I saw on the City of Charlottetown Building Permits page that the street going from the new traffic light into this area is called Saint Dunstan's Avenue.

Bike, walk lane meetings analyze public's needs

The consultant working to link the greater Charlottetown area with pedestrian and bike lanes met with young people and educators Wednesday night in Stratford, P.E.I. to discuss their needs.

The public meeting was one of several being held by the IBI Group, the company working on the proposal called the Regional Active Transportation plan to link Cornwall, Charlottetown and Stratford with walk and bike trails.

Active transportation is described as any form of human-powered transportation.

"Well what we heard tonight is that there is a keen interest in trying to create pockets within the neighbourhood in Stratford that are walkable and bikeable, and that schools were interested in expanding the trails system, not to just get people to and from school, but also to help them with their programming of physical activity," said Norma Moores, an engineer with the IBI Group.

Stratford residents are also interested in creating a walk and bike trail on the Hillsborough Bridge that will make it safer to cross, said Moores.

The company will take the information from their meetings in the three communities to construct the active transportation plan, she said.

The proposal will then be presented in December.

It's nice to hear that there is initiative to create biking and walking paths to link Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall. It would be nice to see more bike lanes in Charlottetown too, because there are not many!

but I thought it was interesting, and worrisome in a way... Let's just hope they can fix the problem so it doesn't happen again.

$17 million P.E.I. Convention Centre buckles again

Construction of the $17-million-dollar convention centre on the Charlottetown waterfront was on hold Monday after the steel seawall around the site buckled and twisted for the second time under the pressure of shale dumped onto the site.

The steel wall that was pounded into place bulged outward and became unstable and a hazard. The steel support cable snapped.

"Working in a marine environment is very challenging. I've had it characterized as trying to change the fan belt in a moving vehicle," said Ron Waite, General Manager of the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation and project manager for the convention centre.

He said project engineers are working on a plan to stabilize the site and allow construction to proceed.

He could not predict the direction of the plan or the potential extra costs involved.

"The structural nature of the soil is such that it's not strong enough to hold it so whether additional anchoring and bracing systems are required or whether it's a totally different solution, I can't answer that."

The project is now five weeks behind schedule.

Waite refused to say who was to blame for the wall's second failure.

"We have to alleviate the stress on the wall. We've got people working on that right now but we just don't have the answer. It would be premature to determine [who is to blame]."

The province and Ottawa are each paying half the cost of the convention centre – about $8.6 million each.

Public Works Minister Rob Vessey said he hasn't been fully briefed.

"I haven't really received anything from CADC telling me what the issue really is," he said.

Waite said the delays will escalate costs and noted that the large crane alone, which is sitting idle, costs $15,000 a day.

Waite couldn't say whether or not the convention centre would meet its targeted opening date of March 2013.

"If it's a three-weeks fix we can make the date; if it's a three-month fix the date's definitely in jeopardy."

OUCH!! So much for the Engineers Report! I always thought they should be adding it 90 degrees to the hotel extending to the west. Extending it out to the water just adds a whole lot of complications as seen here.

Plaza.ca has the site plans up for the Old Sobeys location in West Royalty now. It will be split into 5 storefronts (34,634 sf, 5000 sf, 4000 sf, 7231 sf, 10,270 sf) I'm guessing if Toys R Us goes into this location they would be utulizing the 34,000 sf location.

If you notice the plan actually says +/- 7231 sf, +/- 10,270 sf. So I wonder if the other 3 are set to go.

Also for Spencer Drive phase 2 I am going to throw this out there that Staples and Dollarama may consider moving. I guy I knew that worked at the Staples in Summerside said the manager in Charlottetown was always complaining about the location of their store.

They are currently 25,000 sf and 10,500 sf respectively and there is openings in Phase 2 for 30,000 sf and 12,000 sf also both Staples and Dollaramma have good relationships with Plazacorp.

Another new building going up in the Sherwood Industrial park. 35,000 sq. ft. and it will be home to 10 new tenants.

Tenders were also put out recently for foundation & structural concrete for Richmond/Rochford Condominiums. Looks like a nice addtion to that area of town !

A developer is taking his plan for a new building on the Charlottetown waterfront to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission.
City council has turned down Paul Madden's proposal for a retail/office/residential building on the waterfront twice. The development would go in the space between Founders' Hall and his condominium complex.
City council's second vote went against the $4 million complex Monday in a 7-3 vote. Madden is surprised by the refusal, because the city's planning committee recommended approval.
"They should be all over development that's reasonable and sensible," said Madden.
"I believe it's a good development. I think most of the citizens believe it's a good development."
Local councillor Eddie Rice was one of the seven who voted against the project.
"I didn't feel it would fit at the time. It blocks vistas and views, that are not guaranteed to anybody, but still, this land is not just your average piece of land it's waterfront land," said Rice.
"When you come down here to play, or to work or to do something, it comes with certain responsibilities."
Council is embarking on a new master plan for development on Charlottetown's waterfront. They want a virtual freeze on major new development until the plan is done.
Madden says that'll take too long, so he's going over council's head. On Wednesday he applied to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission to overrule Council and force them to grant him a permit.
"What are they saving the views for if everyone's kids have got to leave and go to Alberta to work because there is no development in Charlottetown?" he said.
If IRAC can't help him, Madden said, he may take the issue to court.

GAP ADDITION

They just built a new GAP Factory store and no sooner did they move in, they have steel up for another store right next door. It's probably another clothing store but things are really on the move in Charlottetown.
I was over to Halifax the last few days for a trip on business and really, they may have more but we are steadily catching up.
One thing I kept telling my kids was to buy things from stores we didn't have at home because they pay 10% more tax on clothes than here on PEI.
That in itself will slowly fire up the development of clothing stores on PEI and may be contributing to what is happening here in Charlottetown now.
I know that the "no PST" has been going on for awhile but I think it's finally waking up the PEI consumer, that running to Moncton isn't always the best idea. 5% tax on clothes here will sure keep me buying at home.

I also hear that a major development in East Royalty has been approved. This is land across from the Robin's Donuts on St.Peters Rd. Does anyone know what this is? Commercial, Residential ???

Good news about your GAP factory store!

FYI though there is no 10% PST on children's clothing in Nova Scotia, only 5% GST.

What is meant by children's clothing (age wise) ?

There is no PST on all clothing/footwear in PEI.

From the gov.pe.ca website;

In Prince Edward Island, all clothing and footwear purchases are exempted from the 10% provincial sales tax. This exemption is applied to all purchases of clothing and footwear at all retail stores in Prince Edward Island. There are no coupons necessary and you do not have to seek out participating stores.

*N.B.: "Clothing" means all items designed to be worn on the body but does not include protective items such as helmets, hockey pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, hockey gloves, baseball gloves, golf gloves and other protective items of a similar nature and does not include watches, jewellery, purses, umbrellas and similar items. "Footwear" does not include cleated sports footwear such as baseball cleats, golf shoes, soccer boots, or bowling shoes, curling boots, ski boots, skates, waders, and footwear of a similar nature.

I think the retail market in Charlottetown is certainly picking up speed. Buchanan Drive is expanding and will be getting even more stores when Sobeys moves to Spencer Drive. Spencer Drive Plaza will be a very important addition to shopping in Ch'town.

There are also new smaller stores all over the metro area. If the new development mentioned by billy1 in East Royalty is commercial, it could be very good for that whole area. I could see a large grocery store, hardware store and a few smaller basic stores and restaurants (Tim Hortons has been rumoured, and perhaps Subway).

The next few years should be exciting for commercial development. I'm really pumped to see Spencer Drive fill up with new stores!

I see a shop is going up by the new Gap. I hear that it may be a shoe store and not sure which one. Also has anyone heard of what shops are going into the five sections of Sobey's once they move out? I hope it is true that we might be getting a Montana's in Charlottetown. That would be cool as it is a nice place to go and eat. Well hope to hear what is coming to the Spencer Drive location other then Sobey's and a Pet Store. I wonder if Mark's and Sports Check will move across from Canadian Tire now that they own both of them.
