Well it's not unpreventable, because people no longer commit suicide over that overpass. They just go to the Don Mills Road bridge. Or the Leaside Bridge. Or any other bridge, really. But they don't jump off that specific bridge.

+1 over London.

An interesting thing about the E.C. Row is that it took forever to build. About a year per km, which makes it one of the longest highway construction periods of all time.

Also it's crazy how the E.C. Row is disconnected with the rest of the highway system... it doesn't have any major interchanges along it's entire length but that will change once the Windsor-Essex Parkway (401 extension to Detroit) is completed.

It's a pretty good commuter and connector/through link in Windsor. Koodos to them for having the foresight to plan and build such a thing.
-Still, compared to Detroit (which Windsor is part of the metro area), its highway network is pretty small, but more isn't always better.

Yes you're right, it did take forever to build the EC Row Expressway, construction at the time was plagued with continual workers strikes (in Windsor? surprised?)

There are a few interesting flaws with the expressway, and there are only 2 on ramp/off ramp interchange points that are up to Ontario 400 series highway standards, Lauzon Parkway & Huron Church.

Bear with me here while I try to explain it's deficiencies.

If you are ON the epxressway heading towards downtown, say you're starting at the very east end (where the highway changes to Ont. Highway 22) You can NOT exit to Jefferson if you're going west, you can only get on. This forces people to exit @ Lauzon Parkway and take service roads to get to Jefferson. This might not seem odd, but you CAN exit on to Jefferson if you're going east (very tight off ramp with speed of 40kph). You can enter EC Row from Jefferson if you are going west, but you can not enter EC Row from Jefferson if you are going east (you must take a service road to Lauzon Parkway to enter EC Row).

Chew on that for a minute.

I'm not a highway expert, so I'm sure you guys have names for these different types of interchanges.

Secondly with the exception of the 2 interchanges listed above (Lauzon Parkway & Huron Church) all other on ramp and off ramp scenarios are similar with the exception of Walker Rd and Dougall.

If you want to get on the expressway at say, Dominion, and you want to go east and you're heading towards the river you just get in the right hand lane and turn on to the on ramp, but if you want to do the same thing at Dougall and you're facing towards the river why you have to get into the left lane and make a left turn up a circular ramp to merge. This screws alot of people up who aren't familiar with the set up.

The Walker road area actually has collectors for a kilometre or so that run between Walker and Central on both sides. So if you get on EC row @ Walker and you're heading east you actually cruise along the collector up until Central and then merge on to EC Row. And if going west can get off at Central and ride the collector to Walker.

My other point about the exressway is that in some sections (mainly between Howard and Dougall) there are exits and entrances that are much too close to one another, causing some strategic weaving in and out of cars to safely enter or exit.

Secondly there are quite a few on ramps that are done on an up hill like Dougall, Howard and Jefferson. This causes some problems because either A) people don't hit the gas enough so by the time they hit the top of the hills to merge with 100kph traffic they're only doing between 60-85kph OR their jalopy of a car doesn't have enough oomph to get up to 100kph by the time it's necessary to merge.

This is a photo from back in September of the new Autoroute 30 bridge over the Saint Lawrence River in Western Québec.

Last week a new section of Autoroute 30 opened between Autoroute 930 and Autoroute 15. Autoroute 30 is a new ring road that is being constructed along the south side of Metro Montréal, and will provide much needed relief to through traffic, finally providing a proper by-pass for traffic wishing to avoid the congested freeways on the Island of Montréal.

^ That is really great to see. It's about time Montreal had a bypass. Being a south shore person, I always find it weird that I have to drive through Montreal to go to Toronto, Ottawa, or any point west of here.

I'm also interested in the progress of Autoroute 35 between St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and the Vermont border. I go to Vermont a few times a year, and it would be great not to have to drive through a bunch of small towns on a bumpy little 2-lane road. I heard it is only supposed to be ready in 2017.

It is an extension of the existing Quebec autoroute 30. As of a few years ago, the autoroute didn't go west of Candiac.

The portion between Candiac and Chateauguay is complete and now open to traffic.

The portion from Chateauguay-Valleyfield-Vaudreuil is supposed to open at the end of next year.

A couple of additional photos taken back in September:

The first is looking on the old alignment of Autoroute 30 (now Autoroute 930) in Candiac. Referencing the map above, this is the eastern interchange on the Jean-Leman portion of the freeway, the new structures in the photo carry the mainline lanes of Autoroute 30 to their new southern alignment. The Jean-Leman portion is the section of freeway that opened last week:

Further west, this photo shows the three level interchange between Autoroute 30 and Autoroute 730. Referencing the map above, this photo is looking west at the western most interchange on Partie-Est:

I guess it will take another 50 years for them to connect the A-640 to form a ring highway and rid the island of North Shore bound traffic?

Usually MTQ does better than this these days.

Unless... this exit is not the preferred route for traffic on this highway going into the city and there is another "Montreal" exit somewhere along it.

Or... there is a second sign somewhere before this exit that says that you have to take it to go to Montreal. I have seen this on occasion as as well.

Very few people who would arrive from the east would want to go to Montreal at this particular spot of the highway - they would have exited earlier at autoroute 10 and taken Champlain bridge. Someone who would be travelling west at this interchange would most likely want to go at one of the cities mentioned on the sign.

Words to live by, especially when it comes to infrastructure projects in Canada.

Still, I think it's a waste of money much of the time to do all these studies and assessments. It can delay or cancel a project due to bad funding allocation. Just look at high speed rail in this country, but that's another thread...

Just get er done.

My mistake - I thought it was the eastbound 30, not the westbound!

I bet you this one will never get done. If you take into account the fact that:

- the A30 will take a whole lot of traffic from Ontario and points west off the island highways

- the completion of the A50 between Gatineau and Mirabel will siphon off a bit more traffic off Montreal island from Ottawa-Gatineau and other origins

- the northbound A13 from Dorval even though on the island still leads to a decent northern off-island bypass route that avoids the worst of traffic in the central part of Montreal

... it's not likely to be a huge priority to complete the A640.

Is there a timetable for the completion of the A50?

At present it's only divided as far as Mirabel and terminates a little beyond Lachute near the bridge to Hawkesbury ON.

It's longer than that now. All but 24 km (between Montebello and Thurso) are now open, though not all of it is divided. The last Montebello-Thurso section will open in the fall of 2012.

At present A50 runs east from Gatineau to Thurso, then you take the QC 148 for 24 km through Plaisance and Papineauville, and then you get back on the A50 at Montebello from which point it runs all the way to the A15 at Mirabel.

Off the top of my head roughly 60 km of the 150 km of the A50 is divided, the rest is a super-2 like NB-11 between Campbellton and Bathurst.

The divided sections are mostly in the Gatineau urban area (all divided) and at the Mirabel end going towards A-15, with shorter divided segments also around Montebello and Lachute.
