lol, if our new subway cars any indication, these won't be on the streets 'till 2017 (i.e. 3 year delay from original schedule).

Though that certainly looks like a fully operational model to me...wonder why it'll take another 3 years from now for them to go into service.

they should go live in 2013 from what I've heard.

The rollout will be slow and steady... they have to build around 200 of them. I think the original order was intended to be more like double that. Politics got in the way, as it usually does.

Meanwhile, the existing fleet will keep rolling, with the worst-off individual units being retired as new cars are delivered. They're building a large maintenance shed for the new units out my way, at Leslie and Lakeshore. The prospect of streetcars going up and down Leslie and bisecting the Lakeshore on its way to the Gardiner and DVP is sure to blow a lot of east-end commuters' minds. The construction phase alone should be brutal.

There are currently 248 streetcars, so this order for 204 new streetcars which are almost double the length of the existing fleet is like getting 408 of the old streetcars in terms of capacity. Plus I'm sure they will keep some of the old ones, as well as maintaining the existing storage facilities required to maintain them.

They will maintain the existing barns... for now. But pressure to sell the land they sit on will eventually force their sale. The TTC needs all the money it can get. Once the existing supply of older streetcars can be serviced by a single shed facility, they'll likely axe one, sell the land to developers and voila - a residential infill project will arise in its place. In ten years' time probably the only older style streetcars you'll see running will be designated tourist cars, just for nostalgia's sake - much like what they did with a handful of the even older PCC cars.

I was just at the new mock up display for the new streetcars, all I can say is that they are huge.

Looks in great shape for a 40 year old bus! Considering buses are normally designed for a lifespan of 12 years...

Are there still New Looks running with Calgary Transit? I don't recall seeing any in service when I was back in Calgary last summer.

I don't know, but a Québec City forumer would probably be able to answer to your question.

Their numbers are dwindling, but the ones they do run are only around at peak hours.

TTC expects to tap into Presto by the PanAm Games

Published On Mon Nov 21 2011

Tess Kalinowski
Transportation Reporter

Quote:
When the TTC introduces the Presto fare card on all its subways and surface vehicles, it expects 90 per cent of its 1.5 million daily riders will subscribe to the electronic system.
Quote:
Instead of searching for tokens and change, riders will be able to tap onto any TTC subway or bus and any bus system in the region. TTC riders will also be able to access their debit or credit card accounts with Presto because the TTC will be getting the next generation of the system that is designed to handle open payments.
Quote:
“That’s the first face the customer sees entering the system and it’s not always the most customer focused,” said Stintz, who is vowing that Presto will cost the TTC less than the 7 per cent or $70 million it currently pays for fare collection.
Quote:
He said Metrolinx is aiming for a “substantial deployment” of Presto by 2015 for the Pan Am Games.

The TTC expects the old fare system to be phased out within six to nine months of a full Presto rollout.
Quote:
The TTC would require 1,000 fare readers in the subway and another 3,000 on the surface. In addition, it would need about 400 self-serve vending machines to load cards in the subway, said Hughes. But all the TTC fare structures, including the Metropass, seniors and other fares would be incorporated.

Very cool idea. I'd say out of any city in the country, Montreal probably has the most "New York" feel to it, other than the fact that it is mostly french.
