It's good to hear the theater project is making progress. Those renderings are very old though. They are from before the demolition of the Tribune Building was discussed here. Hopefully the Tribune Building will remain untouched.

I was walking down 400 W by the HKS Architects offices situated in the Gateway when I noticed a very mature rendering (one that looks like it could be put in a Salt Lake Tribune or KSL article) of a building that was about 6 stories tall and quite long bearing a giant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints logo and the name Bishop's Storehouse Building. The style is contemporary, with a color scheme similar to the new Church History Library adjacent to the Conference Center.

So, would the Church put a building this nice over by the grain silos off I-15 in Welfare Square, or is this nice piece of infill going to occupy some parking lot space between the Family History Library and the Triad Center? This is indeed the big question.

If you are interested in seeing the rendering for yourself, walk past the HKS offices on the bottom floor of the Gateway Mall on 400 West and look for a cubicle closest to the windows where the rendering is on display.
Hmm, that's very interesting S.P. I would love to see another piece of infill as beautiful as the LDS History Library. If, anyone can get a picture of the rendering when walking by, please do.

If the building is just a large Bishop's Storehouse, I'd hope that it would be located in the Welfare Square area; taking up space in the CBD--especially that space between Temple Square and Gateway--for something that would have such a limited use seems counterproductive. I'd much rather see more mixed-use there, whether expansion of the BYU-SLC campus, hotel, more commercial...I dunno. But I wouldn't want the Bishop's Storehouse located there.

The LDS Church recently constructed a very large building to act as a central distribution center for the the Bishop's Storehouse's in the area. The building is located on property they own in the Manufacturing District near 5600 West. I would assume that this is the project that has been referred to.

I do not think that the LDS Church has immediate plans for the block north of the Little America Hotel at this time. I can tell you that they are working to purchase all of the property that Gastronomy owns north of North Temple and west of 400 West. They haven't mentioned their future plans yet.

Someone also mentioned earlier future development on the property where Carl's Jr. now sits on State Street. There has never been a real concrete plan for that site. Future projects have been mentioned mostly by wishers and dreamers. The property is owned by the Dee family which owns a lot of commercial real estate in the valley.

Well, if you google Bishop's Storehouse Building it doesn't come up (the building that is on display in the HKS offices). It looks like a really nice 6 floor contemporary office building (with the same color scheme as the Church History Library), not a warehouse.

Excuse Me...

What is the LDS Bishop's storehouse? Why does it matter?

I grew up there until I was about 17. Never heard the name.

Is it like a secret vault?

That is classically cryptic.

NOT a slam.

I just cannot believe that I never heard of it.

It's related to the church welfare program. If somebody is receiving assistance from the church, they may be directed to go to the Bishop's storehouse to get groceries and other basic household items. It's like a grocery store, but not open to the cash-paying public. You can only shop there with the church equivalent of food stamps. There are a bunch of them scattered around Utah and the West, often located near "DI" stores, which I imagine you are more familiar with. Wikipedia has a pretty good overview.

The items available there very often carry the church's "Deseret" brand, and are produced by church-owned agricultural enterprises (Farmland Reserve, Deseret Ranches, etc.). If you ever hear a church member say something about working a volunteer shift at "the cannery" or something else with a suspiciously similar theme, it's all part of the same system.

From what it sounds like this is not just a bishop's storehouse. Those don't need much space and definitely don't need multiple stories. It might be some kind of administration building that will administer the Bishop's Storehouse system.

The church said they were looking to develop an office park on the two blocks between North Temple and 3rd North between 4th West and 5th West.

EDIT: OOPS. It was Gastronomy that was going to build the office park. I guess they're not building that any more if the church is buying the property.

Looks like a place to put a Bishop's Storehouse Administration building.

This is what I'm thinking as well; it's also possible that only a portion of the building would be used for LDS Welfare Administration while the rest would simply be more Church Offices. It's a better name than West COB.

Before I saw the name of the building I assumed it was another Church Office Building because of the nature of its design.

So true. The church needs to calm down for a few decades and let everything take shape.

It's almost like they want Salt Lake to become the Dubai or Rome/Vatican City of the United States.

Pie Pizza Today

Yikes! Today is the Pie Pizza get-together. Now that I'm planning my itinerary (I'm thinking I might just come up on bus, unless anyone is carpooling from Provo), I realize that there are multiple Pie Pizzas. What is the address of the one we're meeting at?

So, is this tower definitely linked with the Broadway theater? In other words, if the theater is built, does that mean the tower will be built too?

As far as I know yes. H.P. ( who development 222 South Main a few years back ) will develop this tower also. Word is it will be around 25-stories tall. So it should be a little bit taller then 222 South Main.

That's a good place for a new tower because it would bridge the gap between Salt Lake's two skyscraper clusters: The City Creek buildings and Gallivan Center buildings. I'd love to see something like that (maybe a little shorter) as long as the Tribune Building and the narrow Main Street shops are safe.
