A big bunch of money was dumped into both ships just prior to the owner giving up. A ton of work was done to improve the fire protection systems. A friend and I did a survey of each ship to determine the content, state of all systems and value of each ship.

After a meal in City Place on our way to the jets game, we really noticed how City Place is dieing out. I know its been for years, but what a shame. Same goes for PP. Most certainly new res projects can help local businesses in these malls, but i think there is a much larger social problem that needs to be dealt with first. 15 yrs ago we often went shopping at PP, eatons, the bay, but suburban malls have killed PP, and anyone i talk to have the same thoughts... im not going in there. truly sad. How do we clean this up??

I dont think suburban malls have killed Portage Place. They killed downtown shopping before portage place was built. Portage Place was dead in the water when it opened. It was an ill conceived idea to revitalize downtown and never materialized as a shopping destination

the construction of mts center killed eaton place as the final death nail and had a advers affect on portage place... has not really recoverd.. we need some sorta hardware store downtown...

The problem was that they redid Polo Park at the same time, and it was bigger and easier to park at. The idea was that going to Portage Place would be the equivalent of a visit to Polo Park, with the Bay at one end and Eaton's at the other, but it was too awkward and far to go from the one department store to the other. This attempt at bringing the feeling of a mall to downtown didn't work because, as a mall experience, it was badly designed and inferior to the real thing. It should have been predictable based on the mediocre performance of Eaton Place since its opening a few years earlier.

I barely remember Portage Place circa 1999 (I was 5), tht mall was more dead than it is now for sure

I'm still of the opinion that in 25-30 years, when a new arena will be requested for the Jets, they should demolish Portage Place at build an 18 or 19 thousand seat arena. It would be a much better land use option than an empty mall. Hopefully TN will acquire this property in the years to come.

Agreed. Maybe it should just become a HUGE apartment building itself. West of the Clock tower can be retail, East Main floor can be the food court still. As for the second floor, build an 7-11, rip out the remaining stores, keep the skywalk and create an after-hours entrance to the future 15-20 floor apartment tower('s) built above it

but anyhow the apartment buildings behind the mall need better managment

on a unrelated note food bank usage went down this year from last year

The footprint of the current MTS centre barely fits on the PP site. Not sure how an expanded Arena would even be able to come close to fitting on that site...

Oh right. Might as well keep iMax and turn the rest into apartment recreation!

I used to use food banks when I was a kid. Glad they were there!
