I've been walking past the Plains most weekdays for the past couple of weeks, and absolutely nothing has changed. Not all the windows have even been removed. (If I recall correctly, the north side still has plenty of windows intact).

At this point, the credibility of Brightstar/Westgate has pretty much been shot. They might as well refund the deposits and sell the land to a developer who could put something there, even if it's not a condo development or hotel. I wonder if Harvard would be interested in putting an office tower on that corner, in lieu of demolishing the Gordon block? Or maybe Viterra could be convinced to build their new headquarters there and get rid of that faceless block they call a tower.

Yeah, this one continues to be a real head scratcher. I can't decide if Brightstar is just a group of completely inept developers who are just over their heads and don't have a clue or if these guys have some alterior motive going on by continuously stalling, missing dates, having bullshit press announcements on purpose to some devious endgame plan. I do recall they stated the building would be demolished by the end of November, I guess that's the next checkpoint likely to be missed. Gardens on Rose is also stating they are staring construction in November, I guess it will be a race to see which of these two painful projects actually start first. My money is on neither of them!

Not sure why people would even hold out hope for this anymore, this thread itself should be deleted.

Agreed! I also suggested this 3-6 months ago. There has been zero progress on this project to date, besides closing the plains, stripping the inside, and removing the windows. A sales office, model of the project, and fancy signage, to me, does nothing. Actually demolishing a building (meaning tearing it down as opposed to removing windows), digging a hole, and then pouring a foundation would be much more convincing.

Arguing it from the other side, why don't Gardens on Rose, and Centre Square Plaza have their own threads then? They have gotten as close to being built as Capital Pointe has. Would everyone not agree?

I would fully support those buildings getting threads. Hell, I'd say all of the major tower projects (Gardens on Rose, Centre Square Plaza, Capital Pointe, Tower III, 1855 Rose, Library Project) all deserve their own thread.

Umm ... Does it mean anything if I've seen the white minivan decorated with the Capital Pointe murale being driven around just a few days ago? (I`ve seen it a number of times over the past couple years, too!)

Exactly, there are so few threads on the man/sask forum, especially for major projects. The atlantic has more than double, plus an ssp local.

If all of the decent projects in sask and western and northern manitoba were represented by their own threads, this forum would be able to support an ssp local Winnipeg.

Not to sound like a douchebag, but has anybody actually taken a look inside the building? It looks like from the way this is going I was pretty much right when I said they might going inside out with the demolition

Maybe the "developers" are "waiting" for "someone" to "burn" "it" down?

I walk by it everyday... there is nothing happening. No workers going in and out and no change in the amount of windows on the outside (which we were told all need to go before demolition can move forward. Unless they are working on doing some demolition in the basement, with secret tunnels to move workers in and out of the site, it looks like they've hit a deadend...

Winter is setting in. Any project with money on the table would push ahead to make sure things can get rolling by then. You can't pour foundations in the dead of winter can you?

I am in the camp that this project is doomed and the battle behind the scenes is the City trying to get the CP-Brightstar and Co. to tear the building down.

My question would be does Saskatchewan have the same protection mechanisms in place like places such as Ontario? Will depositors get all of their cash back? Or is Brightstar on a one-way flight to Bermuda with a suitcase of cash. Usually the funds are help in a middle man account until things get going, so just wondering if their are any loop holes in our laws that is causing sleazy Brightstar to drag their feet??

Well, I've given the people at Capital Pointe a call just now, it seems as though the company that holds the responsibility for the job, Silverado Demolition has fallen behind at other sites in the city, not just at the Plains Hotel as well and they got no clue when they will actually start to demolish the building. Might give Silverado Demolition a call to hear they're reason for the complete sluggish pace.

Edit: And now I just called Silverado, apparently they're planning to mobilize the site within the next 2 to 3 weeks, and that they have been neck deep in other demolition contracts so they haven't been able to call them. But they said there will be some people at the site by the end of this week.

If nobody believes give either of them a call to hear it for yourself.

I find it ironic that members of the public on SSP are taking it upon themselves to hold the developers and the contractors accountable for the state of the project! More power to ya... maybe that's what we should have done in Saskatoon wrt River Landing Village...

Thanks for the investigative work! Do you know if Silverado does more than demolition work? I ask because I can't think of too many buildings being demolished in the city leading to the huge demand for their work. But if they provide other contstruction related services the hot sector would explain why their behind. Maybe they need to hire some more people! Hell, I'd be willing to volunteer to help bring down that eyesore, give me a sledge hammer and I could get the ball rolling!
