By 2013, the detachment will be constructed in the bedroom community located 20 kilometres east of Regina. The Regina unit is currently located on Dewdney Avenue along with ‘F’ Division.

“As a community and region, we welcome the detachment being built out here,” said Pilot Butte Mayor Sid Bowles. “It doesn’t have to be in our community. It can be built anywhere nearby and we’ll be happy.”

Regarding the location for the detatchment...

I have heard it will be going right by the Icehouse. Not sure that makes the most sense.

If it is going to be serving Pilot Butte, White City and Emerald Park would it not make more sense to put it east of the 48 by the fire hall? The interchange with the #1 will be going there and will provide quick and safe access to the #1. You cannot even turn left at the Ice House turnoff so to get to Pilot Butte you would have to either back track to the 48 or go to the Esso turnoff and make a left hand turn at a level intersection.

There is already a small detachment in the strip mall beside the Ice House.

There wouldn't be any room beside the Firehall as new residential is already surrounding it and further North, they are currently making on on off ramps to connect to the #1 highway. So that land is very full. There might be some room on the West side of the 48 highway beside the Baseball diamonds.

Also...the Esso is gone at that intersection. It's making way for a Tim's and another gas station that looks to be completed very soon.

From the report on CTV Regina news this evening, the new location of the detachment will indeed be opposite the Ice House Tavern - it will be on the west side of Emerald Park Road.

According to the Leader-Post, The Westland Properties building on Hamilton, will be evicting all of its tenants. It's been deemed unsafe. I didn't realize there were over 40 suites in that building.

Don't forget the Crescent Apartment Building at 1550 14th Ave. It's on the chopping block too. It's next to General Hospital, and we all know what people are clamoring for there.

I'm trying to think of what we all know but I'm drawing a blank. What are you referring to?

Will be interesting to see what is done with the Hamilton Street property.

By all accounts what is there is a good mixed use building, essentially what they are tearing down will be replaced with the same elements as per the downtown plan (retail at grade and residential/office/whatever above). They must have something in mind. My guess would be office, only because it would be odd to see them tear down what they have only to replace it with the same uses. Unless they wanted to go with owner-occupied residential.

Crescent Apartment Building

Shortage of parking for hospital staff and visitors in the area is a long-time source of frustration. But here's a Facebook post by one of the evicted tenants related to the story in today's Leader-Post:

The Leader-Post left a few ugly details out... namely, the tenants of this building have received five rent increases over the past three years. I think Pam Cowan did a fine job over all, but the decision to turn this into a "Well, the building is old. What can I do?" story is kind of a — move. According to Jack Sharp, we've been living in a death trap all this time? Really?

It wasn't a city inspector that said [the building was unsafe]. As far as I know, it was the contractor that came in on Westland's dime to give an estimate on what needed to be done in order to bring the building up to code. And we all know how good contractors in this city are at doing restoration work... as far as we know, the plan is to knock the building down to put up a new building - probably medical offices.

First, as you say, you need more people living there to make it more of a pedestrian area naturally. In order to do that you need to find a way to encourage development firms to build residences there (so far there have unfortunately only been high end developments... )

Then once you have more people actually living and spending more time downtown, you can afford to start making it not as convenient for cars as you will already have somewhat of a critical mass to enable businesses in the area to operate. As it stands, it's much easier to run a business (economically) in the East/other areas of the city. That optical store had to move out of the old city hall mall to the east because they couldn't sustain the losses... and that shoe store that relocated from the Southland (can't remember the name) stayed open all of what? 4 months?

As I said before, it doesn't really matter if the 2-ways in actuality really only increase travelling times by 2 minutes or so... the perception of people who don't go downtown as often is that it is a huge inconvenience, so instead of getting more people to try out downtown a little more often, you have them staying away and instead just going to the shopping nodes in the North, East, and South.

I'm just saying we don't have the critial mass living downtown to enable us to start being harder on drivers. I chose to live near downtown because it was close to work and I wouldn't have to drive as much... but I was lucky to find something as the amount of property available in the area is almost nil. I would have bought something right in the core if I could have... but all that is available are the really expensive condo developments that young professionals have no hope in hell of affording. It's a rarity that anything under 300k comes on the market... and if anything does... it's usually attached to condo fees >$500.

Your gonna have to bite that lemon. Cities were built for the Car for the past 40 years. Regina is systemically making it harder to drive downtown. Business and residents whom choose to complain and not get with the program will loose out. My friend takes the bus to work, its cheaper and quicker than him driving. You could easily start there if the downtown traffic situation is not your cup of tea.

Does anyone know what's going on behind the building on the SE corner of 12th & Broad?

I wonder if it's related to the renovation/addition the building that's on the corner.

Also, regarding traffic issues downtown: If you think it's bad now turning onto Broad St, just wait until the Rose St building (Rose & 12th) is filled with 1500-2000 employees who weren't downtown before. That's gonna be a — load more vehicles coming into and out of downtown!

Welcome to the forum.

If I were the developer - I would wait until I knew what was going on with the CP yards before I started developing the parking lot. I think there's a lot of potential to do something great on/with the lot.

That's easy for me to say though since i don't have to pay the bills!

Here's hoping that whatever is built there faces onto Dewdney and not into the parking lot. We shouldn't have to hope for good urban design - it should be automatic. These are simple policies that could be implemented that don't impact the developer in a negative way but contribute significantly to creating a better project.

Good to hear! I was just going to ask if there had been any more developments regarding this project; I haven't been by there in a while.

Also anxious to see what else goes up in the Southland parking lot; it's super sad seeing the former-Walmart sit there empty and inactive, considering Target did not identify that space to be one of their future stores.

Last time I was in that mall, there where already business gone by the entrances to the old Walmart. The mall looked kinda empty to.

What lemon do I have to bite? I said I pretty much live downtown, so traffic really doesn't matter to me since I never have to drive through it... everything is walking distance.

I just wonder how businesses can "choose to get with the program" if residents choose not to (which will most likely be the case... people like driving and taking public transit almost automatically gives a negative conotation - sad, but true). If people's habits don't change, the only way businesses could choose to get with the program is to move out of the core so that they are more easily accessible. There are very few businesses that could act as draws to the core, and at the moment, I can't think of a store that could claim that in Regina... you'd need something like Lululemon or H&M for that.

Just an FYI, Design Regina takes place this Tuesday-Thursday. It would be nice if a lot of SSPers went out and helped support the urban cause.

There will be lots of people out promoting urban sprawl. We need to be there to ensure the urban voice is heard.

We could spin this positively and hope that developers are very confident that something great is going to be built on the CP site, thus necessitating a major hotel on that spot.
