Over the next decade or two, all of those lowrise apartments are going to be demolished. They're insanely dangerous to live in as most of them are barely up to code, and some of them aren't. A few of them have burned down completely in the last few years I believe.

one of the city of burnaby reports i saw, stated that because of the rundown nature of the building (two story walk up in metrotown), they were recommending that the building be torn down to make way for a new tower, or words to that effect. i would think this would incite other building owners in metrotown to neglect their building in order to get rezoning.

metrotown needs some affordable rental units to house people who work in metrotown. that's part of the green strategy isn't it? is this total revamping of the maywood area documented somewhere?

There are cheap rental places, like, a few blocks in other directions from metrotown station. I should know as I live in one! I'm not complaining that I can't live 3 blocks closer.

As long as the low cost rental units are replaced I see no problem with the redevelopment of all of the Maywood area.

Yeah, it's almost bordering on ghetto/slum (by Canadian standards) at this point. Something needs to be done. People shouldn't be forced to live in buildings that aren't up to code just because they can't afford different.

I don't know of any plans to build more dedicated rental units around Metrotown. There are several co-ops, but no new ones in the last 12-15 years. A lot of the new apartments are privately rented out, but they go at rates 50-60% higher then those old walk-ups. Metrotown is simply going upscale as witnessed by the type of apartments being built.

Silver is another block west of that - an assembly of older SF homes including a heritage home + a small corner store building.

yes i believe that one is going to 37 floors, right next to the school. beresford will look so different in 2 years, with this one, Mertroplace 46 floors and Silver tower at 38 floors next to metro place, all three will have a podium with retail creating a pedestrian friendly street.

hope more is to come, it will make metrotown more urban then suburban mall. oh yeah i forgot about Metro Tower 3 as well. pretty cool canyon as you travel east on skytrain.

It's kinda sad that in a couple years, 3 of the 7 tallest buildings in Metro Vancouver will be suburban-quality snoozers, including Burrard gateway...
