I must admit that I found the whole Shadow Warrior rant thing to be hilarious. I could not believe that you all kept responding to him and egging him on. You would have had better luck going out in the yard and debating a tree. At least that giant assbag is off the forum. He reminds me of a number of people that I know, but just can't stand to be around. Anyway, glad to see the first $20M is in the pot. Let's hope the rest comes along. It still amazes me that we are fighting tooth and nail for $60M and the good folks in Regina (half our population) is throwing $500-$600M at a new downtown mega stadium. I still don't think they will get funding for a stadium that size, but you have to admire their spirit.

My office (okay, my desk in a somewhat dingy model/draft storehouse) looks directly across False Creek towards downtown Vancouver with BC Place 2.0 right in the middle. It kinda depresses me thinking about having to return to that can't-do Haligonian attitude in a few months.

How about naming this thing Irving Stadium or Irving Field. That should be good for another 10 or 20 million.

Thanks for posting the picture. This is fantastic looking stadium. Something like this would look great in Halifax.

I looked up some information from wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navy_%E2%80%93_Marine_Corps_Memorial_Stadium. Here is the Bing Maps Bird's Eye View - http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/#5003/s...lt=-21.341356&z=19&h=282.299818&pid=5874. It is located in Annapolis, Maryland.

A similar design is the InfoCision Stadium - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InfoCision_Stadium_%E2%80%93_Summa_Field. However, the Navy Stadium looks better with all the blue seats.

This is sunken bowl right fenwick? It might work at DC and shave a few dollars off the cost to expand it.

I loved the Irving Idea - especially whining. Made me laugh - but if you wanted a real slogan wouldn't it be the winning starts here? In light of the ship building contract - I suspect Dexter will more likely get on board in this in a few months time. I'd say give him a few months to calm down and have his vacation - after all he was on his way to Isreal before he postponed the start of his trip for the announcement today.

It seems that the sunken bowl concept is quite common - McMahon Stadium, Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium, Rogers Centre, Ralph Wilson Stadium and many others are sunken bowl stadiums. I don't think that it needs to be a major excavation or quarry though, even Shannon Park has depressions that could be excavated and the ground heaped up in a bowl shape. The current SMU Huskies Stadium uses a dirt berm as part of the stadium.

Actually I'd like to correct my slogan. Given Harrlington's happy reaction to the ship contract in that thread - I think the slogan should be f*ing right winning starts here. No? Too much?

That trip wasn't vacation... it was a trade mission type deal. My lab was actually supposed to go on the trip as well, but we ended up not doing it because there are a few of us going to China next week for a research collaboration.

For whatever reason Israel and Nova Scotia are being pushed to play together in several specific areas of potential strength (of which neuroscience is one).

I know that Mr. Shadow Warrior is no longer with us however, I sure hope that he is listening to 95.7 radio. There is a quite a bit of Stadium talk coming in from email comments and even some of the callers. It seems this Ship Contract has turned some of us into believers. We miss you Shadow. Ok... no we don't.
Jim Irving was asked about the possibility of a JD Irving Stadium. He dismissed the question for now stating that the most important thing is the contracts which I'm sure we all agree was the right thing to do. He didn't say no though.

I think printing the signs is a little premature, considering we need a...you know stadium first! LOL

But still I like the slogan.
It wasn't until late that I realized Dexter was on a trade mission not a vacation, but I was too tired to change it. But certainly what Jstaleness is saying about what he heard on the radio is good and it was pretty much what I expected. Halifax will be in an 'afterglow' period for a while until this all starts and then I suspect there will be permanent grins on many political faces as the $ come in.

ships start here came first, then the contract.....

The glow is permanent. No dollars need to flow to the shipyard for the future to begin. I think you will see immediate response in terms of expansion, development, housing new retail etc. and that is the beauty of the magnitude of this announcement.

Should we expect Ikea within a year?
