Winnipeg and Hamilton are holding off on hosting Grey Cups until their new stadiums are finished (can't say I blame them). If Regina hosts the Cup in 2013 and won't get another shot until at least 2023 (assuming 10 years minimum between Cups), is that Regina's way of saying that there is no real chance of a new stadium for the foreseeable future and that they had better grab a Cup while they can? I would think that if they realistically thought the downtown stadium/renovation project was a go, that they would hold off til 2016 or 2017 to host a Grey Cup and use it as the capstone of a huge rebirth of Regina celebration. Maybe I'm just reading between the lines, but hosting the Cup in 2013 and not later, means more than you think.

Absolutely not.

I don't think a lot of people on here realize how much work is being done on this project. Just because you don't hear about it on the news, doesn't mean a thing.

I think if there is an opportunity to draw $50 million into the city/province.... you do it, with or without a new stadium. Why not host it now AND 5 years from now? There is no set schedule that dictates who gets the Grey Cup year after year. Toronto has had it 45 times of the last 100. I say it is a fitting send-off for Taylor Field and will be a great welcoming event for our new facility when she is built.

Toronto has only hosted 3 times at the Rogers Center. It hosted 41 times at the old CNE and Varsity stadiums, long before the Grey Cup became the money machine that it is today. You are living in a dreamland if you think Regina will host the Grey Cup in 2013 and then again in another 5 years. Each CFL city will want it's chance at the gold ring and with 9 teams coming up (make it 10 if we get an Atlantic team within 10 years) and you have each city hosting it once every 10 years. During 2000-2008 each team has hosted the cup in rotation except Hamilton (Montreal hosted twice) and now that Hamilton will have a new stadium, they will be in the hosting rotation. With $50+ million coming into each city and millions of dollars to the host team, nobody is going to just step aside and let Regina host again before their turn just because they finally have a new stadium. Regina won't host again until 2023 at the earliest.

The sequence of hosting over the 2000-2008 time period has no bearing on future events. The only consistent thing looking back at host cities over time is the lack of consistency.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Grey_Cup_champions

Toronto is hosting 5 yrs apart (2007 and 2012) and BC is hosting 6 yrs apart (2005 and 2011). There may be a defacto 10yr rotation for freeze-your-ass-off stadium venues which wouldn't apply to Regina IFFFFF it had a covered stadium. Its up to the league, not the other cities.

The league is run by owners whom all want to drink in the millions and millions you make off hosting the Cup. They each will want their turn. However, it does not surprise me that Braley, who is one of the more powerful owners, gets to host the Cup in the big media markets a little more often than say the community owners of Regina. I am not complaining that Regina is getting the Cup in 2013 (I hope to be there), I just don't expect us to get the Cup again for quite some time regardless of our stadium situation. I may be wrong, but I don't think so. Anyway, we will enjoy 2013 and just be happy that the party is coming to us.

It's not a set rotation. Teams have to bid, meet criteria, provide funding and the league has to vote.

Not so sure that the team hosting gets a larger share of the pie, the city certainly does but my understanding is that the teams share the leagues take pretty evenly.

The Host definitely makes more money than the rest of teams unless they screw up. They bid and guarantee the league a certain dollar amount and all the profits over that go to the host. It is usually in the $millions. In fact I believe Edmonton may have made close to $6million last year.

Ya, I believe the team/city can "buy" they Grey Cup from the CFL, guaranteeing the CFL a certain amount of cash - but all additional profits go to the club.

At least that's my understanding.

Facility could be under construction
By Murray McCormick, The Leader-PostOctober 14, 2011

Quote:
Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco feels the timing of Regina playing host to the Grey Cup game in 2013 couldn't be better.

It was announced Thursday that the 2013 Grey Cup game is to be held on Nov. 24 at Mosaic Stadium, which is to be expanded to approximately 50,000 seats with temporary bleachers. It will likely be the final Grey Cup game played at the stadium, with a new multi-purpose entertainment facility on the horizon.

Regina City Council has approved the construction of a new stadium.

Whether it's a retractableroof, open-air or closed-roof stadium has yet to be determined.

"By 2013, there will be a new facility under construction,'' Fiacco said prior to Thursday's announcement. "We cannot be a competitive city without a new facility. That will happen. That's why 2013 is about saying goodbye to the old and in a few years it will be off to a new facility.''

Regina is getting this shot because Cohan gave us the stiff with the grand daddy 100th GC. Remember Regina was very much in the running to host it. Toronto is now in short rotation as a cash and media grab for the league so they got it. But as far as the Stadium goes this is a duck and cover. If officials were so keen on a new building being on line within 5 years they would of held off to double their money the next time.

Example.... MLSE and the Raptors have held off bidding and hosting a All-star game until all the development projects were done for the Air Canada Centre. They knew they could milk more money out of the event by holding off and have stood pat. Expect them to be aggressive to land the All-Star Festival for the next bidding cycle.

Regina is a large cash cow for the league and Grey Cups. Only recently has Cohan been trying to stiff us to leverage more hype and cash from larger markets. Being in bed with the Toronto Sports Network doesn't help either. Regina could easily host another GC in this decade, that's not the issue here. There is still no funding in-place for the stadium.. that's the real issue.

And please Fiacoo has as much credibility on the Stadium as a used car sales man. Anybody with any logic or critical thinking skills sees this Grey Cup bid as inevitable. Throwing in useless fluff that a new Stadium, has been approved by council means NOTHING. WHERE IS THE MONEY FIACOO!!!! Hes pandering headlines, what a fool.

This GC means nothing to the Stadium equation. The Riders and City we're deserving of this since Toronto heisted the 100th GC from us.

I agree with the above post, but the part that is true about that LP article is that this will be the last grey cup at mosaic, theres no question about that. Wether or not we get the new proposed faciltity or another desgin of a new stadium. The riders will have a new home being built in the next 2-3 years without a doubt!!!!

I feel theres a hate on regina and the riders with all these posts. Wether you like it or not there will be a new stadium being errected in this city in the not so distance future wether it be 400mil or 150mil, there will be one!!

I don't think that there is a hate on Regina (at least not by most of us) as much as there is a frustration with Regina. Here we sit without a decent stadium while the city leadership piddles around with visions of grandeur. Winnipeg has their new stadium, Hamilton is starting their new stadium, Vancouver has their improved stadium, even Ottawa will have a new stadium. Regina just has a bunch of politicians blabbing about urban redevelopment projects and exorbitantly expensive white elephant multi-purpose entertainment facilities that no one can figure out how to pay for. We just want a new stadium. It is as simple as that. It only takes 18 months to build a new stadium, and if Fiacco had gotten off his arse and promoted a reasonable stadium project a couple of years ago we would be playing the 2013 Grey Cup in a new Riders Stadium.

I don't think the new stadium would do well on top of railyard containers.

and yet the BC example you pointed to cost as much as anything Regina will do. I don't understand the logic. There's was worth it, Regina's wont be?

There is no guarantee that a new stadium means you double your money in the CFL. In fact, an expanded Mosaic will hold up to 50,000 while an expanded dome will hold around 45,000. The big money for the Riders, besides ticket sales, is the game sponsorship and the festival. With an expanded EVRAZ Place, the Riders are going to make off like bandits. They will fill the Soccer Centre with 6000 for Riderville over 4 nights at $30 cover charge and $7 beer.

If anything, hosting the Cup now puts the Riders in a position to help pay their fair share for a new facility. It will also display for the rest of Regina and Saskatchewan just how 'necessary' a new facility will be.

Apples and Oranges though. Lets all be frank here BC Place would still be sitting with a moldy patch work fabric roof if the Olympics and the shower of Federal funds didn't fly their way! No flipping way the Province would of forked over that kind of cash for that kind of roof replacement without knowing a flush of Fed cash would follow match or exceed what they put down. Talk was rumbling in BC on a solution to the future problem of that roof but I could be be almost certain that buzz and talk started up with BC's aspirations to hold the Olympics.

I do agree with the frustration. I am frustrated because are officials are not thinking outside of the box. They are incompetent and this project its to large for them to handle. The decaying ancient planning staff plus Fiacco and his minions don't have the slightest clue on how to get this thing done. It is true, as much as we like to hate on Winnipeg () I am a fan of their project - far from perfect - but they are getting things done. For Canadian Cities where large infrastructure projects like this are as rare as a saskwatch we have to look to what other Cities are doing and take notes.

My timeline is 5-6 years for anything to get built. The old outdated proposal was aimed at 2012-2013 so it is bizarre to think anything will get done before 2014 (when originally they couldn't even get posession of the CP yards till 2012 and thought they could build it in a year? ). 2015 is modest and 2016 IMO is realistic. Something will get built we just have no idea what.

I find that very offensive as I know much of the planning staff quite well. I don't think you really know the talent and the hard work that exists in the Planning and Sustainability Department. There are quality people both young and old who are more than qualified to be where they are at. Excuse me if I don't believe that all planning decisions should come from the voices of this board.

Furthermore as I mentioned previously - there is a lot of work occurring behind the scenes on this project. Just because you aren't aware of the details doesn't mean a thing.

/end rant

I think the entire proposal of a re-vitilized downtown which includes a stadium and redeveloped current stadium site IS thinking outside of the box. No? Or is it just a dislike for Mayor Fiacco that makes you rant on? You make it sound like more of the latter.
