A couple of photos from the late 1960s of trains departing Montreal's Windsor Station. You'll notice the Laurentian Hotel on the left which was demolished in 1978.

OMG, the Great Depression really robbed Canada of some fabulous buildings just when we were growing like gangbusters. I read the other day that Canada had the world's fastest growing economy from 1896 to 1911. After WW1, Canada got back on its feet and grew rapidly again only to be hit head on by the Great Depression. It really wrecked things for this country in so many ways.

City of parking lots, sort of like the Hamilton of today. Hopefully Hamilton follows Toronto's pattern and some decent buildings get built on all the empty lots someday.

I love Windsor station, and I remember the days when the trains would go right into the shed (70s), then up until the shed (80s-90s), then nowhere near the shed (00s, on account of the [then] Molson Centre construction/completion. Replaced with a banal terminus called "Lucien L'Allier". Shameful. I still think that the Bell Centre spot is too small for the size of the arena (just check out how congested the corridors are during period breaks for Habs games). A better location would have been immediately to the south where Labatt Park (Expos) might have gone if Loria/Samson had not stolen the team for a song.

I read about that in Unbuilt Toronto.. Depressing.

Also robbed from us was the full College Park proposal, and the Toronto Street towers.

The Star of the Sea Hall (built 1920) in St. John's NL was torn down in 2011, to make way for a well received 8 storey condo (40 Henry Street) which has not started construction yet.

I'm also sad the old building had to go... but I do love the new building. Even more than the old one, if I consider purely aesthetics.

It's definitely the style I want modern buildings in old St. John's to have. Something uniquely ours.
