The Canucks selected winger Nicklas Jensen with their 29th overall draft pick today. I like the pick, it sounds like he could end up being a solid power forward and the Canucks could use some more depth on the wing.

What did Gregor know and when did he know it? Unsurprisingly Gregor knew nothing:

In his first, in-depth interview since the mayhem of June 15, Mayor Gregor Robertson also said that while he had many conversations with his chief in the days leading up to the Game 7 riot about police preparations, he did not know what the plan to control the downtown core looked like.

“I didn’t know any details,” the mayor said. “That’s how the system is set up. … I have full confidence in the chief and the chief is responsible for that plan.”

Mr. Robertson’s extraordinary disclosures are not likely to make his post-riot life any easier. Not knowing the particulars of the police plan is one thing; not being able to control his police chief is another. Who’s running the city anyway?

^^ We need more cooperation between the two, that means working with eachother on how to manage everything.

Shame though that all we're going to get is finger pointing and no one wanting to take the blame.

I was going to say I can't believe the Mayor, who is on the police board and had a meeting of that board the day of game 7, didn't know the policing details. But then I thought about who we're talking about, and realized that, yeah, I can believe it.

According to the G&M, some busineses may not be covered by their insurance. I also hadn't realized the rioters damaged the Contemporary Art Gallery:

Haha, my bad. Hopefully the riot talk dies down before free agency day this friday, or at least moves to another thread.

Re-signings:
-Chris Higgins for a two-year $1.9M per year deal.
-Sami Salo for a one-year $2M deal

New Signings:
-Marco Sturm for a one-year $2.25M deal
-Mark Mancari for a one-year $525K deal
-Andrew Ebbett for a one-year $525K deal

Ex-Canucks signed by other teams:
-Raffi Torres to Phoenix
-Tanner Glass to Winnipeg
-Alex Bolduc to Phoenix
-Sergei Shirokov to the KHL
-And of course Christian Ehrhoff's monster 10-year $40M deal with Buffalo yesterday.

Not too bad. I'm glad Gillis didn't get involved in some of the ridiculous deals being handed out today. Ville Leino or Joel Ward would have been great additions, but for 6 years and $4.5M and 4 years at $3M respectively? No frikkin' way. It was a shallow free agent pool and everyone's price went up as a result. Good on Gillis for staying out of the mess for the most part.

Sad to see Torres go, but his physicality was a liability at times. Won't miss Glass or Bolduc much. Wish the Canucks could've kept Shirokov, he looked like he had some serious potential.

Has anyone actually said it was suicide? I would think it's the more typical oxy+alcohol accident style like Derek Boogaard/Heath Ledger/friend of mine.

This has been such an unbelievably tragic summer for hockey. Boogaard, Rypien, Belak, and now an entire KHL team. Just horrible.

No kidding, eh? Unfortunate, really. Can't believe it myself, that all of this happened in such a short period of time (3-4 months). Makes you think about what's really important and what's not.

That Game 7 loss by the Canucks is nothing compared to thse tragedies.

Guess he thought the same thing. He's rocking #9 now...

4-3 SO loss to the Pens in the season opener. Canucks probably would have won if the special teams hadn't completely melted down early on. As if the SCF wasn't enough proof that the PP and PK are useless without a healthy Ryan Kesler. He can't get back soon enough.

It's going to be a long year for Canuck nation...

Hopefully, we get into a groove. I didn't watch the game last night, but I heard that Luongo let in two goals that he should have had. Makes me think if we should keep Schneider, and shop Luongo..

Schneider seems to be able to handle the mental side of the game a little bit better, and plus, he's younger. Supposedly, Luongo is entering into his prime, but if last night (and night's before in season's past) was any indication of his "prime", then this team is in trouble. I'd rather go with Schneider, who is also younger, and still has room for a ton of growth and potential.

Canucks are in a difficult position. After this year, Schneider probably would like to take a starting job. He's an RFA, and if he's traded, would get us a pretty good return. Hope Gillis is working the phones as how to get a great return for a pretty good goalie for a long time.

What would suck, is if Schneider was traded, and then won the Cup, and we're here stuck with Luongo :S
