If you want an authentic Irish experience call Lydia's and ask when they have a Ceileih (sp?). They typically have them on Saturday afternoons, Irish musicians (sometimes even dancers) get togeher, sit in a circle and just play. No shamrocks, nothing green, no leprechaun hats just layed back good time.

Plus I just wanted to comment that 8th Street and Louise has quite a bit of activity. The Starbucks at the NW corner is now open, the McDonald's at the SW corner is renovating, and some sort of mystery development is going on at the NE corner. I was just at the Teacher's Trunk and so I figured I'd give an update on a (formerly) sleepy stretch of 8th.

Hudsons Tap House is scheduled to open in the former location of John's Prime Rib in February 2012.

I wasn't a big fan of losing an upscale downtown staple for a 'chain' beer and burger joint (or just another freehouse but without the flavour and culture). But i'm starting to warm up to having another big draw downtown especially since I heard they will have a giant patio on the rooftop! What a great idea! View of the bes, downtown and river!

speaking of new restos, went to the newly opened Seoul Korean BBQ (a new style which appears to be taking over the city) on 20th and C. and well it seemed quite authentic...mix of amazing dishes and some very strange flavours and textures! But nonetheless a great addition to the upcoming 20th street district right next to Roxy Theatre.
But they didn't have a liquor license yet...

So now the question is:
Has Saskatoon's perceptions of 20th changed enough to sustain a decent pub or bar on 20th that would draw people from all over the city?
...let's not hope for a Barry 2.0

I went to a Huskies football game at Griffiths stadium on friday - it was great and I would recommend it to anybody. 20th Street takes on a different look at night than in the day. You can drive from Idywyld to Ave H in the evening hours and only see people going to shows. It is actually a beautiful street at night. I don't thing a pub like you are thinking would work yet. More needs to be done to get rid of the "west side"stigma that exists in Saskatoon. I have spent many hours in this area and seen great changes over they years. Hopefully these changes continue as this is a great area and some really great shops and businesses as well as people. It seems that the west side type of crime is spreading to all areas of the city. Slowly but it is. Show me another theatre in Saskatoon or most Canadian that matches the Roxy. It was beautiful when we were kids and it's back to the same now. Keep changing 20th, you are a gem in the hiding.

It's always going to have that west side stigmatism attached to it. Sorry, maybe I'm closed minded or a chicken or whatever but I am weary of walking down that street after the sun goes down. I doubt it will ever become another 2nd Ave full of pubs and restaurants.

Although yes, I popped into that Korea place, because I love Korean food. Awesome food and very authentic! I think a lot of Saskatoon's hidden culinary gems lie in those mom and pop owned Asian restaurants.

I agree with you. It is a beautiful street and last night all I saw were a bunch of people of all ages at the Theatre for Kevin Oleary's talk (Dragon's Den), as they have ALL TYPES of events there now from live music, talks, hypnotists and symphonies. So yes, it is becoming a great area losing the stereotypes from those willing to cross over and check it out themselves.
At the same time I think what is saving face for the area is that it doesn't have a major watering hole and 'sobering things up' a bit so people can shake the images of the Barry etc.

Of course people can say what they want about our 'safe' areas we all love to hang out at, but anywhere in ANY city you need to have your head on you about stupid people starting bad situations:
ex) avg of 3 cop cars at the Hose on broadway on Sat night, vandalism downtown, stabbings at Sutherland, rape on campus etc

20th street has made huge strides even in the past year. The Roxy is the nicest theatre in the province. There's also a nice coffee shop just east of the theatre. I haven't gotten around to any of the Asian restaurants in the area but I do plan to in the near future.

20th will eventually come around, and as several of you are reporting, it's currently in the process of doing so. As the last remaining ungentrified urban street scape in this growing city (well, maybe counts 33rd too) it pretty much has to. I've only been her 9 years, but some of my elders tell me Broadway used to be quite the sh*thole back in the 80s too. No more.

I noticed while driving down Broadway yesterday that there was a new Mexican Grocery store. It's just around the corner (on the Broadway Avenue side) from the 7-11. Not sure when that popped up, but my Mexican friends are excited about it.

It's not open yet -- it's been "Opening Soon" for over a month now. The Las Palapas people are behind it, so I'm sure it will happen.

I walked past the downtown bus station today around 5:30. It really is nice to see that many people using public transit.

157 Second Avenue is probably the most urban building I've seen in the province. High quality and busy ground floor retail. 5 floors of residential. Gorgeous finish and a sleek top. And it comes right up to the sidewalk. It might just be my second favorite building after the Bessborough.

Well why would the city of Saskatoon spend money on a private facility like Griffiths Stadium?

Griffiths cater first and foremost to UNIVERSITY sports, where as Howe Bowl being a civic facility is available to anyone basically on a first come first served basis.

Certain times of the year the city has University football, soccer etc using Griffiths. The city has needs like the Hilltops, highschool football, highschool soccer, etc....

Gordie Howe Bowl plans approved, city to move forward with renovations

A city committee approved plans Tuesday for revamping Gordie Howe Bowl, triggering a financial plan to determine how to pay for the $9.8-million in proposed upgrades.

The plans are scaled back from an original $30-million events centre concept for the facility, which the city spent the last 2 1/2 years investigating.

A consultant recommended converting Gordie Howe from a rental facility into an events centre that could host concerts and trade shows, but the idea wasn’t feasible, according to a report.

“This is a lesson well-learned,” said Coun. Pat Lorje. “This is what happens when we get an expensive consultant in from elsewhere. . . . There’s been a three-year delay on this just chasing our tail.” [...]

I noticed in the Star Phoenix today a large colour ad promoting Mining for Talent: Vale Career Day occurring at TCU Place on Oct 19th. The ad says they are accepting resumes.

I wonder if Vale has opened, or plans to open, an office in Saskatchewan. Anyone know?

I stumbled across this document today on the City of Saskatoon website. The City proposes several neighbourhoods for the east sector with a large chunk of land at its core slated to be a suburban business park and commercial developments. The land area that the proposed business park occupies looks massive.

It's also interesting to see how the proposed perimeter highway touches the east edge of the sector, intersecting with hwy 5 and hwy 41. Also of note is that the proposed east sector plan includes removal of a portion of hwy 41.

With Saskatoon's rapid growth, I am guessing that development of the first neighbourhood in the east sector is not that far off.
