The city's response should be to offer a brochure on solar panel curtains

Are these complaints regarding BC Place's lighting referring to the soft blue glow on the roof? I have passed through the area at night with that lighting and I found it soothing, and not overly bright.

BTW, I can empathize with those that get the light pollution, but c'mon really now. It's just common sense that if you're going to live downtown you risk at some point in time having to live with noise and light pollution. I myself am very sensitive to light when trying to sleep and that's why I wear a night mask. (It took me a while to find one that I really liked but I did!)

No, they were testing the lighting features for a few weeks. I wasn't complaining, but I live on Marinaside and Davie, which is not next door to BC Place, and the lights were distracting while I was watching TV. They are incredibly bright, and when they are flashing and changing constantly is when you notice them. Once a week would be no problem, but every night would be annoying.

I live downtown and don't have much sympathy for complainers either, but there's a big difference between moving next door to a night club for example, or 1 year after you move in, having a business that used to be a bank become a loud venue. Unless you have the type of organization involved in squashing the BC Place Casino, there's no way to stop it.

This was formerly known as 125 East 8th (when it went through the city process).

If the casino hotels were built, that would block the lights...

The old billboards for BC Place used to flash and blink a lot - all the time.
I'll bet people didn't like those, but put up with it.

Exactly, when one lives downtown, especially bordering large commercial / entertainment districts, you should expect such lighting features to be part of the experience.

This is where i feel some are far to strict on the precedent attribute. For example, if you buy a condo in a tower in the heart of the west end or in the middle of a nearly pure residential area, then yes you do have some right to be angry about big flashing lights / new bars and clubs being built in your building.

But lets say you bought a condo in a tower on Robson street or Granville street and they decide to put in a new bar / club in your tower. In this case, i feel that the fact you bought your condo there you accepted the fact that since you are in / near a major commercial / entertainment zone, that such facilities will likely be built below / around you as the city, and therefore these zones, expand.

So for me it is not the fact if the pub / lights were there when you moved in, but where you decided to move. If the possibility of such features being built near you leaves a bad taste in your mouth, then don't buy in areas that are likely to be subject to such expansions (such as around the stadiums in this case).

The old ones were nowhere near as bright. The new ones could give sunburn.

When the Pitt River bridge was created a new video billboard was set up at the East end. When they first turned it on it was insanely bright, so much that even I found it dangerous (shocking, isn't it?)

But, they were able to find a middle ground, and since then the brightness has simply been cut in about half. Problem solved! If only things were so easy in Vancouver!

I still haven't seen the clerestory panels lit up in person.

Who here is Shocked and Surprised by this?

Automatic self-cleaning toilets will solve so many problems on the streets of the DTES.
And they'll pay for themselves by the ads on the outside.
..right

Seattle removed all of its automated toilets because of maintenace issues. The only reason "Vancouver" seems to be keeping them is that the contractor is obligated to do so (in exchange for advertising revenue) - ie. it doesn't appear the City is serioulsly out of pocket from the maintenance issues (the contractor is).

What's planned for the big stage being erected in front of the CBC the past couple of days? BC Place related?

^CBC LIVE! - A kick off to Culture Days: http://www.cbc.ca/bc/community/blog/2011/09/cbc-live-a-kick-off-to-culture-days---september-30.html

In typical CBC fashion, the "stars" they have lined up for the event are mostly unknowns.

Kings of Leon at Rogers Arena.

Although by the looks of the interior shots, they were only selling maybe 10k tickets.
