Not sure if this is news to you guys or not but... Moncton will be getting a Target store, along with Fredericton and a second Saint John location to go along with the location that was previously announced for Saint John at McAllistar Place:

Thanks for the info.

I had a look at the document and it is the Northwest Centre Zellers that will be converted to Target.

The Superstore location on East Main is not slated for conversion. This is not a surprise as it is a non standard smaller location, not amenable to expansion.

Actually the 2nd Saint John location site in Lancaster will become a Walmart. Target has sold the lease to Walmart.

This will be the second Walmart in Saint John. Both Moncton and Freddy now have two.

From what I remember of places I've lived at/visited, some of those Zellers to WalMart locations seem questionable; unless WalMart is planning a smaller footprint store size for some locations. (I'm thinking mainly of the Kitchener/Waterloo locations. I'm probably misremembering them but they didn't feel like WalMart locations if they are where I think they are)

There was an article in the news yesterday that stated Walmart would be introducing smaller stores into some urban Canadian markets

New addition to the Codiac Transpo fleet

From the City of Moncton website...

MONCTON – Monctonians will notice something new on City streets this weekend: Codiac Transpo has added an “articulated bus” to its fleet. With a total capacity of 112 passengers (seated and standing), it is highly recognizable, thanks to its accordion-like connection. Its inaugural trip will take place on Sunday, September 25th, for the Park n’ Ride service offered by Codiac Transpo during the CFL game. Afterwards, it will primarily be part of the Express route sub-fleet.

The articulated bus is on loan for the next few months from Nova Bus, which has been a key partner in the development of Codiac Transpo’s fleet in recent years. Codiac Transpo welcomed the opportunity to try out some of the industry’s newest features being integrated in public transportation.

In perspective, standard buses typically measure 35’-40’ in length, while the articulated bus measures 62’. Keeping the passengers top of mind, this bus is designed to provide a comfortable riding experience.

I'm assuming that it will be used for the Mountain rd express route when not tied up with large events.

I actually saw this bus the other day, turning from Vaughan Harvey onto Millenium, no doubt on it's way to the Codiac Transit Garage.

Halifax has a fleet of these. I think there are articulated busses in Saint John too.

Bernice MacNaughton High School has big plans:

They want to raise around $2M to build a "Field of Dreams" behind the high school, where the existing athletic fields are located.

The plan includes a new football field with artificial turf, track and a grandstand, as well as a couple of practice fields and improved parking.

This is a snapshot of their plans:

This is a very ambitious project, but with the exploding popularity of football in Greater Moncton, the single artificial pitch that we have at Rocky Stone Field is no longer enough. I think that this is a great idea. Unfortunately my son only has one more football season after this, so he won't see the benefit of this, but it will be good for all six high school football programs in the metro area and also the Moncton Minor Football Association.

Touchdown Atlantic II - Night 1

I just got back from taking in the free Kim Mitchell concert this evening as part of Touchdown Atlantic's festivities. Lots of great memories. The band was tight.

There was a large crowd and people were out and about everywhere on Main Street. We spend lots of time on this forum talking about what we want to see our downtown look like, ie. more housing, more businesses, more visitors, etc...tonight was one of those nights I wish I could just bottle up and unleash every weekend.

Excerpted from the CBC News IPad site

Mount Allison to get $30M performing arts centre
CBC News
Last Updated: Sep 23, 2011 7:38 PM AT

Mount Allison University’s Board of Regents gave its approval for the construction of a $30-million performing and fine arts centre on Friday.

The news release said architectural renderings for the centre show an “echo” of the former Memorial Library, twhich will be torn down to make way for the new centre.

(That) building was built in 1927 by prominent Maritime architect Andrew Cobb to honour students and graduates who died in the First World War.

Although it hasn't been home to library books since the 1970s, the library was revamped as the student centre and became a campus hub — housing the student union, campus radio station, and the campus pub.

However, the building has been vacant for the last several years.

Construction on the new centre is expected to begin in 2012, anticipated to open in 2014.

“We are very pleased to be moving forward on this project,” said university president Robert Campbell in a news release. “It is one of the most dynamic arts and culture projects happening in the province and will have great significance for our University and the wider community.”

The $30-million centre will be on the northwest edge of campus, and would house programs that are now spread out across the campus.

Toronto firm Zeidler Partnership Architects designed the plans for the 50,000 square-foot building.

Bruce Coates, a member of the group protesting the demolition of the library, said he has an issue with the fact the university raised money from alumni by promising to save all or part of the building.

The university said it would save the brickwork from the main entrance and re-install it as a back-drop for an outdoor theatre.

The university told CBC News there is already a plaque on display in the Student Union Building honouring those lost in the war.

“This is a momentous day for the Arts at Mount Allison,” said board chair Bruce McCubbin. “The new centre builds on a legacy of talent at the university and will solidify its reputation as providing Canada’s best undergraduate education.”

Personal note - So, now it's official. This project will be going ahead. I sympathize with the protesters who wanted to save the old Memorial Library, but there are other ways to honour our war dead and I think that it is time to move on. This new arts centre will be a valuable addition to the artistic community in southeastern NB.

Great news about BMHS (Myself and another forumer are alumni).

For the picture it looks like they plan to do some general site improvement (roundabouts etc) and they are planning for future expansion of the building which is also awesome!

It would certainly be a welcome improvement to the current field setup they have now.

Though I wonder if it would mean that Rocky Stone would end up being used less often. I always thought it was nice that the high schools had a sort of neutral spot for football games, and it meant that Centennial park gets visitors well into the fall and in the evenings.

This is nothing more than a proposal now, so nothing may come of this but the parents who are spearheading this are devoted and committed so you never know what will happen.

They want provincial funding for part of this project, and they have a valid point. School District 2 (the anglophone district for southeast NB) has more students than any other school district in the province, yet we do not have a track facility for the district. Also, both Saint John and Fredericton have three artificial turf fields, while Moncton only has one. This is despite the fact that southeast NB arguably has the most active football culture in the province. For example, five of the eight 12 man high school football teams in the province are located in the southeast.

I sympathize with you Myles, i agree that it is nice that Rocky Stone is always busy and it certainly keeps Centennial Park active well into the late fall, but capacity is an issue and there are lots of difficulties in booking the field for events. In particular, it might be nice to have football practices on turf rather than natural grass.

This is a good project, but unless there is provincial government support, it might not see the light of day.

Re: the articulated bus

Our local newschaser actually has some video of the new bus:

They were doing driver training on it in the coliseum parking lot.

in regards to the zellers situation, the Main Street/Superstore location has been loosing money for years. its barely sustainable, and it is in very poor shape. Its been like that since I was a kid.

They will probably just give up that location entirely and allow Superstore to take all of it over

Superstore is already in the middle of some internal renos. Looks like they're setting up a Joe Fresh section like the other stores. I don't know what they'd do with all that Zeller's space.
