Exibition Field House

I've notice a sign, at the Exhibition Park entrance, that shows a rendering of a new proposed Field House. It looks quite impressive. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera so I couldn't take a pic, but here is the link:

Love The Field House rendering and general concept, but it's all still in that flood zone.

City officials focus on new shipping terminal site
Published Friday September 16th, 2011

Telegraph-Journal

SAINT JOHN - City officials have revamped plans to build a new shipping terminal near Lorneville that could bring millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs to the municipality.

Saint John Industrial Parks is looking at a new location for an estimated $6-million barge terminal that would ship massive fabricated components of industrial equipment to big customers along the Atlantic coast.

The last location officials studied, on the southwestern tip of the city, would have required a $25-million breakwater to protect the terminal from strong waves and storm surges. The newest spot, farther up the coast and off King William Road on the west side, is naturally protected and would not require an expensive breakwater.

Industrial Parks has been reviewing sites for years, but officials believe the latest one is viable, said Brian Irving, the group's general manager. The municipal corporation has set an aggressive timetable to finish the bulk of construction in 2012, but Irving said that may be too optimistic.

"It's very aggressive, because we're a long way from home," he said. "We don't have the permits yet and we don't have funding yet, so you can see that we've got some pretty serious obstacles to overcome. But it's a priority for us and we're going at it hard."

The barge terminal would allow local fabricators to tap into increasingly lucrative markets in which oil and gas platforms, power plants and other major structures are pre-fabricated and shipped to destinations overseas.

The terminal would be built close to fabrication shops operated by E.S. Fox and Lorneville Mechanical Contractors, and Irving expects more companies would likely join them if the new facility were built.

...

"It means there would be opportunities not only for the fabricating companies but also for our labour force," Vincent said. "This provides a huge economic opportunity for an approximately $6-million investment by government and the private sector."

The multi-million-dollar project would support the new barge terminal, a lay down area for cargo and a road connecting existing streets to the new facility. Vincent said the project proponents are not yet ready to file formal applications with government, but added all three levels of government and private industry would be called upon to fund the project.

...

With new sea routes opening up through the Canadian Arctic, Eddy said, there is considerable opportunity to ship components of mining facilities to the North.

And Vale Inco's multi-billion-dollar nickel smelter alone could generate "tens of thousands of man years of labour" for Saint John, Irving said. "The opportunity is staggering."

If we really want to improve our shipping a few of us should grab some shovels and start digging a canal through the Tantramar marshes

They tried to build a "ship railway" through there in the late 19th century - they went bankrupt.

You can still see evidence of the railway today if you take the north shore route to NS (Port Elgin to Tidnish).

There is the old stone bridge and now a Suspension Bridge along the walking trail in Tidnish Bridge. My grandmother used to own the house next to the rail cut on the Tidnish Road. The neat part about the stone arc bridge is that I believe they re-routed the river to build it but never routed it back. That's why when you visit the site there is just pooling under it.

Indeed. I know there were rumbles from a few wealthy businesses in Saint John that would have certainly benefitted from that (You're welcome to guess who) but that ultimately never came to pass.

As someone who has grown up on boats and around sailing and shipping, i'd have to say it's unfortunate that's the case. Opening up the Tantramar would have provided enhanced industry and infrastructure to Southern (and possibly even Eastern) New Brunswick.

Great angle on the Harbour Front Condos Greg !
Does anyone besides me think it looks like the stern of a cruise ship? Perhaps that was the architect's idea.

Realized something about your building today eh?

I see the resemblance to a cruise ship too, now that it's been pointed out to me

Since we're already talking about the Water Street area, here are a few renderings of the second cruise ship terminal:

Nothing terribly exciting, but better than the decrepit warehouse that is there now. I wish we had the creativity to take the existing Pugsley shed and renovate it into a new facility, sort of like the Seaport area of Halifax. I think the building itself is rather interesting but it has been left too long to do much with now.

Nice pics! Better than nothing. However, for some strange reason those pictures kind of remind me of the St Hubert Restaurant in Moncton lol.

Haha, yeah I can see that a bit. We're getting a St. Hubert's on the East Side too, maybe they'll open a satellite location in the terminal

I forgot to post the plan showing where this second terminal will be located in relation to the existing one, so here it is. It's basically right across the street from the Three Sisters Park that was renovated a year ago. As you can see, it looks like the footprint is nearly the same size as the Marco Polo terminal, so this will be a significant addition to the street at that end.

Hmm, a bit more out-of-the-box than the Marco Polo Terminal, though the final materials will make or break it. As for the overall site plan...

More seas of parking. I understand there need to be places for departing tours, etc, but like the Marco Polo, this layout looks more suited to a Caribbean cruise berth that's a mile or two from the town proper. Our berths are right in the thick of the Uptown, and I only wish the terminal sites reflected that.

How would you propose they achieve that?

I find this sort of "heritage inspired" building design to be really odd. I understand wanting to incorporate brick and [faux] stone, but no building from the victorian era would look remotely like this, so why bother constraining it with random cues from a by-gone era? It's not like cruise ships existed back then either, why not try something fresh?
