That is exciting news! I am friends with the Project Manager for the WRB and talk to him constantly about what's going on. I will let you guys know what is happening as I am allowed to say it.

Also great to hear something about the SE Bypass again... That project the WRB and the expedited schedule for Saskatoon's North Bridge are all amazing developments!

That's quite the cop-out. It's unfortunate. However, it might have been pretty costly to install a fountain in such tight area, what with all the cables and utilities directly underneath.

Super disappointing about the fountain. I would have rather they kept the water feature and scrapped the stage. You can always put up a temp stage for events. A fountain would be beneficial every single day, not just for events.

EDIT: Oh I see they plan to put it somewhere else now, which is good. In the plaza on the other side of the driveable area would be a good spot. Burrying it in the middle of the park would be a shame.

Just took a walk down there. The pavers are 99.9% done. Only the area where the stage will be needs to be pavered.

They were just finishing installing the traffic lights at the 12th and Scarth intersection, so looks like it might be opening for traffic soon.

They have forms up for the concrete bases of the giant light standards. They have the lighting attached to the tree shade structures that will point upwards and shine through the powder coated "leaves".

ANd right now they are stringing the LED lights for the twinkle plaza portion. All the trees are planted in their spots and will really provide great shelter and shade to the area once grown.

It's all looking REALLY good!

They've been working SO hard lately to get this thing done. It makes you wonder why they p*****d away so many days with nothing happening in the middle of summer.

Not sure if this was common knowledge or not, but disappointingly, Cantebury Gardens Tower (27 storey) is not happening.

I don't know the details. I just inquired about where that project was and if it was proceeding, and the response was that the project was not proceeding at this time. "At this time" usually means never.

I don't know if I'd read too much in to that, to be honest I am not suprised they would not proceed with it at this time. They are busy working on other parts of the development, it is a sizable development and these things usually happen in phases and go through various changes before all the work is completed which will take years. It could still happen or the developer could change the plans again. With three other similar projects in the works, and taking their time, it would be a tough sell to add a fourth. But maybe in a few years after the other ones have been built or not gone ahead the Canteburry Tower would better suited to proceed.

Could be, but I think that was always a very long term plan anyway. I always figured it would be the very last project and that it wouldn't begin until the rest of the development was pretty much finished. By the time that happens (I'm guessing it'll be a few years yet) there could be a lot more demand for that type of building. A tower was always a part of the plan for that site, I can't see why they would suddenly scrap it?

Maybe it was just a poor choice of words on their part and they really did mean "not right now."

Yep. If this tower (although it's original conception was/is very prelim.) goes forward then it will likely be the last project.

I received some more detail.

Essentially when the plan for the whole area was released and sales were beginning, there was very little interested in the apartments in the tower. Most of the interested was in the townhouses.

They have changed the plans a little bit to include residential apartments above the commercial buildings.

They said there is still space there to develop, but they are not currently sure what will go in there.

So it sounds like the tower, as proposed previously, is off the table. And future development of the remaining land will be determined as times goes on.

Well no, that's not correct.

It is a part of the Canterbury Park Secondary Plan in the Regina Development Plan. So if they wish to go with something lower density, then they'll have to seek an amendment.

No new tower is the tallest in the province until it is built , that is the way it works .

It's not North America's best public spaces... it's the Best Public Spaces in the U.S.

From the description:

"What are the best public spaces in the United States? Great public spaces are where celebrations are held, social and economic exchanges take place, friends run into each other, and cultures mix. In your mind, which public spaces best accomplish these tasks, and more importantly, meet that elusive goal of being a place that people hold dear? We've seeded the list with a few suggestions, but we're looking to you to bring the best places to our attention. As places get posted, vote for your favorites! Each user gets up to 10 votes to use as they wish."
I'm loving what they are doing to transform the area, but I fail to see how we qualify...

With the way their politicians are currently failing their country economically I sure as hell hope we don't ever take that idea seriously... We have our issues, but yikes...

I linked to the site from this page on Planetizen, http://www.planetizen.com/toppublicspaces so that's how my confusion came about. But The Forks is there, and so is Granville Island, and some of the other Canadian usual suspects... I say we vote anyway.
