Is the bridge really that stiff that they can add the glass before rolling it out? This must be just a test fitting of the glass.

I was thinking along the same lines, but then again, the glass will have to be able to float a bit, due to the expansion and contraction of the steel.

It just seems to me like it would be less of a pain to just install the glass after the bridge is in place.

Could it be easier to install the glass when you are not over a flowing river? (Not being sarcastic, really want to know if that would be a factor).

That would likely be a very valid point.

unless it all cracks when you move the bridge.....but alas; after speaking with one of the foreman this afternoon, he said that they are installing all of the glass now and they have allowed for an expansion joint all the way around the glass (about 1 inch). The bridge is rigid enough that there shouldn't be much movement.

Why "alas"? You want the glass to break?

Anybody know when the portion of riverwalk east of centre st is going to be done? I haven't been that way in a few weeks.

Given that the bridge is designed to be supported from only its ends when in place, I doubt picking it up by two cranes in a similar fashion would flex it in a way that would harm the glass. It has to deal with the same configuration with continuously varying loads of people in actual operation (i.e. bouncing).

(Riverwalk is very close to finished. I suspect as early as tomorrow or Thursday.)

It's looking very, very close. They will for sure make their October target. All paving/electrical/lighting is done, lines are painted on the path, top soil appears to be complete, sod and perennials look to be about half done and they've been flying on those. I'm hoping the fences come down in the next couple weeks. 2 years of a detoured bike commute will come to an end

I thought the welds would be ground down perfectly before painting.
Is there not an expectation of smoothness?

This assumes you actually care about the weld quality in the first place.
