well that's cool to get forever 21 ..hopefully they bring the men's line to the store even if they don't have a ton for men's ..i just came back from NYC and loved the men's line of forever 21.

it's odd that forever 21 would come in before H&M you would think that a 2 floor location would be big enough for H&M and that they would've wanted that first... that spot's been vacant for over a year.

good news in any event.. a new original store in ottawa is always good news

Finally, Ottawa catches on and starts doing Rideau Street entrances a la Toronto Eaton Centre. I think H&M will be part of the Rideau Centre addition and hotel tower that I am planning on (despite any actual plan). Will make for another entrance from Rideau and probably another in the currently-abandoned department store.

Speaking of that abandoned department store building, I think that would be PERFECT for a Simons!

Another attempt at Heron gate redevelopment...RioCan this time:

RioCan targets $18M purchase of Herongate Mall

Elizabeth Howell, Ottawa Business Journal
Published on June 7, 2011

Plaza will be redeveloped, but anchor tenants to stay

RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust (TSX:REI.UN) plans to purchase a 75-per-cent share of Ottawa's aging Herongate Mall later this year.

The $18-million joint venture acquisition, done in partnership with Trinity Developments Inc., will trigger a long-awaited redevelopment of the 30-year-old facility, which is sandwiched between Heron and Walkley roads in the south end of Ottawa.

RioCan waived some conditions of the purchase and sale agreement, but did not specify what those were.

Media reports say the mall had a vacancy of 40 per cent, which was exascerbated when the 50,000-square-foot Convergys facility at one end of the mall closed in 2010.

Fixing up the 200,000-square-foot plaza had been discussed as far back as 2000, when then-owner Oxford Properties told OBJ it was looking to "maximize" the available space. The plan never materialized.

Current Mississauga, Ont.-based owner Transglobe Property Management bought the property in 2007 with plans to do renovations.

"The mall ... needs to be revitalized," said Paul Dillon, marketing director for TransGlobe, in a 2009 OBJ interview.

"We want to be able to provide the surrounding neighbourhood with a more visually appealing mall for their retail needs and also attract new retailers to align with the customers in the area."

Redevelopment plans fell through after real estate took a hit during the recession.

The 16-acre property will still have anchor tenants like Pharma Plus, Scotiabank and Metro after redevelopment, RioCan stated.

The transaction is expected to finish in the third quarter of 2011.

It appears that, a few years after closing its store on Centrum Blvd in Orleans, Farm Boy will be building a new store in the parking lot of Place d'Orleans, fronting onto St Joseph.

I was walking on Rideau Street yesterday and was impressed with how the new Forever 21 façade and its large bright display windows really improve the look and feel of the street. I hope they kick out Shoppers Drug Mart and do the same thing on the other side. Having a two storey store with an internal elevator improves the vertical circulation in the mall, too.

I hope the Rideau Centre considers moving the cramped and dingy food court elsewhere in the mall and really open up that corner of the building when it becomes the main LRT access.

Couldn't agree more.

http://blogs.ottawacitizen.com/2011/09/30/asian-supercentre-opening-soon-in-orleans/

Those of us who live to shop for groceries — and who doesn’t? — will be excited to see a new, big-box Asian Superentre opening soon at a former Canadian Tire store, 1777 Tenth Line Rd. in Orléans, where the principals promise a bigger and better one-stop selection to rival its well-known competitor, T&T Supermarket that opened near the airport in October 2009.

Tentative opening date is Nov. 18, says David Feng, one of the owners.

Do a lot of Asian people live in Orleans? I don't venture out that way very often but seems like an illogical spot to put such a huge 'Asian Supercenter'. Perhaps they're moving in there because the building is already constructed and is virtually move in ready. I don't think this will really be a competitor to T&T as the two stores are fairly far apart from each other. I wish them the best of luck though!

Realistically, H&M should be at both types of locations. In Toronto H&Ms are downtown all over the place, but they are also in huge suburban malls as well. I'd like to see them open in Westboro on Richmond, to kind of re-enforce the idea that Westboro is Ottawa's "Queen St. West".

There is a decent-sized Asian population in Orleans, though not huge. Keep in mind that many non-Asians will also shop in Asian supermarkets. In a place like Orleans they might even make up a significant proportion of the clientele.

And "Supercenter" (or centre) is often just a marketing word - it may not actually be that super-sized.

Westboro and Queen St. West? That's a pretty good comparison. They have a similar look, a mix of independent shops and big brands, and they're both close to their respective Chinatowns.
