The Aquarium has no plans on moving back downtown, trust me. I sent them a email a few months back on their facebook page asking about their plans for the new building and when. I got a email saying they want to build it somewhere in Sandy or Draper off of a freeway exit, they hope to break ground by years end.

The Utah Performing Arts Center has a website and here is what is being put on the line for demolition (notice that the Tribune Building along with that cool narrow building that houses the sushi place are safe).

http://www.utahperformingartscenter.org/purpose

This is acceptable if it is, indeed, the current proposal.

I know that would be a little bit of — move, but it would show the morons down there that keep trying to yank stuff from downtown that if you take the politics out of it, they can't compete.
Just a pleasant little daydream.
I was thinking the exact same thing Scott, but we'd need a donor like Atlanta's Home Depot founder(who provided the funds for their aquarium) to chip in the big bucks.

Salt Lake City eyes citywide preservation guidelines

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/52464791-78/historic-preservation-districts-says.html.csp

By Derek P. Jensen
The Salt Lake Tribune

...Civic leaders want to memorialize the preservation push by adopting a citywide historic-preservation program complete with a guiding philosophy and a set of zoning tools steered toward neighborhood stabilization.

It won’t happen overnight. And the city will likely be more deliberate since the Utah Legislature — which put a one-year moratorium on any Yalecrest historic district — will be watching...

This might just be space for the theater alone and not the tower. But i also hope that Tribune building stays.

Yeah, if what that image shows was all that would make way for the theater and tower, I'm all for it. But losing the Tribune is a deal breaker. And like I've said before, if it's a choice between this and the hotel, then hotel please.

I sent emails to Mayor Becker, Mayor Coroon, and the City and County Councils. All y'all should do it too!

Looks like a rendering of the future vacant lot. I hope they don't go tearing things down higgledy-piggledy.

I came across a new myLifetime tv series called Roseanne's Nuts. Episode 12 (i've included the link) is all about Roseanne Bar's homecoming to Salt Lake City. The episode portrays present Salt Lake City in a very positive light, referring to the city as "rad," and a "great city." I thought you all might find it entertaining at the least. The image of a city really does matter. I'm glad to hear celebrities talk about Salt Lake City in a positive light!

That fire was awfully convenient (for some people).

No Vasilios Priskos was not the owner of Lamb's Cafe. John Speros was.

I only ever heard of the Aquarium being proposed to be built on the NW corner of 4th South and 5th West. They even painted the old warehouse on the site blue and put their logo on it for a while.

If there's only a choice between the broadway theatre and the convention hotel, I say we build the theatre first. Their is such huge demand for a convention hotel, it'll get built within a couple of years anyway, if we don't build it now. If we go with the hotel, the theatre will probably get pushed off another 20 years.

Good Point! If we could only get a private investor to show enough interest in building the hotel, now, so, that the we could have that faith to do that both will be built.

From what I have heard the SLC RDA no longer has any contracts with the Living Planet Aquarium. I'm sure they would be happy to accomodate a new facility, but because of the sheer cost of such a facility I would be shocked to see one built anywhere in the state in the near future.

Yeah, that is a good point. However, I feel that a new hotel hurt other hotels less than a new theater would hurt the other performance venues. Tough to say.

Does anyone know if the new Film Center to be housed in the Utah Theater is still directly attached to the new playhouse, or if it can be developed independently?

I agree we need the hotel more then the theater. But I dont it will take 20 years for downtown to get its theater. Im thinking more like 10 years, hope it will be sooner then that.

Someone tell me how often the hotels are sold out in SLC?

A great city treasures the arts.

Geez...every great city in the history of man treasured the arts. NOT A HOTEL which can go up anytime.

A city that has no artistic value is pointless. A hotel can go up anytime. You build for your citizens not those who come in for a few days.

Every city in the USA with a population and at least some culture loves the arts. Go through and look in every city that means something. They all have great theaters and they pay off.

Culture is what makes cities advance.

Wow!

I agree with NYC Rick. The suburbs could still poach the theater, but they can't really poach the convention hotel without uprooting the Salt Palace. The more we build up our downtown community, the more support there will be from within downtown for a convention hotel.

Ok, first off we are not just talking about any Hotel, but we are talking about a Convention Center Hotel. SLC doesn't have one yet and we really should by now.
I would love to see both go up at once, but since the city and county will be paying for both ( unless a private developer comes in ) I don't think we can afford both so therefor we ask ourselves what do we need more as of right now? We thought that the convention hotel is in more need as of right now VS a Broadway Theater. Convention goers pass SLC up because we don't have a Convention Center Hotel. That's bad business for us and who knows how much business we are losing. I guess the same can be said about Broadway shows passing us up because we don't have a big enough Theater. But I think the bigger demand right now is the Hotel.
