and lets face it when it comes to entertainment Vegas beats L.A. by a landslide and L.A. suppose to be the entertainment capitol.
Vegas and LA are different entertainments

Las Vegas: Gambling, Strippers both male and female, Nightclubs, Sex, Bars, Shows... it's that whole whatever happens in vegas, hint hint, stays in vegas... SIN CITY for a reason.

Los Angeles: Movies, Shows, Music, Fashion shows, Singers, Dancers, Video Games, Media, Theme Parks, Shopping, The beach, Television... the whole celebrity glitz and glamour and movie stars... all kinds of celebrities and models, that type of thing.

Vegas stole that slogan from Los Angeles.

Los Angeles still serves as THE entertainment capital of the world. People all around see movies, television shows, news, etc.. broadcast from Los Angeles (a ton of media as well in New York). Vegas is just a playground.

Again, to each is their own. But in no way, is Vegas an "entertainment capital". It's just a cute slogan for a city that is gambling, nightclubs, pools and buffet tables.

I think the real difference is that LV focuses on live entertainment (as an adjunct to drinking and gambling), while LA focuses on recorded and broadcast entertainment, typically for distribution worldwide.

Which is not to say that LA doesn't have plenty of theater, music, sports, etc. It's absolutely top-tier in this aspect as well. But production and distribution are the reall calling cards.

Couldn't agree more, you get it!

Pure sex. There is nothing better then watching cranes on the horizon. Just saying, does this remind anybody of the start of the last big boom? First there were a few adaptive reuses. Then a large, starchitecture, public building was built (Philarmonic) and a few low and mid rises. Then, a spate of high rises, before the big crash. It seems we are following that pattern pretty closely right now. We have had a few adaptive reuses, The Broad is under construction, One Santa Fe and some low-rise South Park hotels are going to start construction next year, then shorter high-rises (the new Marriott next to L.A. Live) are going to start construction, and finally, the big daddies of Wilshire Grand and that 40+ story Historic District tower will start late next year. Hopefully, they just won't end the same way.

Believe it or not, the last construction crane in the downtown area was almost two years ago, at the Ritz.

This is how I feel. That's why I can't really hate LA Live. It didn't replace any neighborhood, it replaced surface parking lots. My attitude toward LA Live: it is what it is. The development feels empty and dead when there isn't an event happening and the renders for surrounding developments like metropolis and LA Central are so underwhelming for the type of neighborhood AEG and city politicians were hyping about (the awful "times square of the west" banner). Meanwhile we have real organic urban revival along main spring and broadway which happened independent of LA Live. I hope the city gets down to some much needed streetscraping around the historic core, making the neighborhood even more attractive to potential businesses+residents.

And plus, with the exception of the area directly around L.A. live, South Park isn't even that bad. It's a decent mid-rise neighborhood.

I'm a big fan of the South properties and I remember several other great towers slated for that area before the recession hit. Those buildings put metropolis to shame. I probably wouldn't even mind metropolis if it was stuck out in mid city somewhere. L.A. Live for all its tackiness deserves better neighbors.

That's to be expected, although I would say the projects that are beginning to trickle in now are more ambitious than those of 10+ years ago. The current projects in the pipeline seem more like the proposals from 5-6 years ago.

We all need to get over the fact that 2007-2009 was the peak of an unprecedented real estate bubble and that we simply won't see those types of megaproject proposals for a long time, or at least until the next real estate bubble comes around.

See, you say we aren't going to be seeing any of those types of megaprojects, and logically we shouldn't, but for some reason we are. Off the top of my head, I can think of three right now, including the Wilshire Grand redevelopment. I think there is a chance that megaprojects are here to stay.
