Looks like it will only be a category 1 when it makes landfall in North Carolina and a tropical storm by the time it gets to New York. Chances are you wont even lose power.

Yeah, I dont think it will be all too terrible, it still will do a little damage, but the city will be back to normal in a couple days most likely.

It makes sense that ur area is in zone A. But shouldnt everything whats so close to the east river be in zone A and not B or even C? I dont get it.

I sincerely hope so!!

I contacted my uncle (who lives in NYC) and he was going to ride it out, but they decided to head to Arkansas instead. Better to decide ahead of time and beat the crazy rush of people that might try to leave.

As has been shown many times on TV, the dirty side of the storm is forecast to directly hit all the way up the coast. I hope it weakens, but it's quite possible that NYC could get 20 foot storm surge and 105 mph winds even from a Cat 1 storm. The Hurricanes of 05 and 08 proved that possible.

Proximity to the river is likely less important than the topography. Much of which is likely lower in areas tied to land reclamation.

If you want to see what NYC might experience in this situation, check out what happened to Mobile, AL during Hurricane Ivan.

From NOAA:

Quote:
Storm surge of 10-15 ft occurred along the coasts from Destin in the Florida panhandle westward to Mobile Bay/Baldwin County, Alabama. Storm surge values of 6-9 ft were observed from Destin eastward to St. Marks in the Florida Big Bend region.
Good thing for NYC is that this is a weaker hurricane, but the potential for a larger storm surge is still there, especially if it occurs during high tide. The reason I draw a parallel between NYC and Mobile is because Irene is likely to make landfall east of the city, like Ivan did. Also, Mobile Bay created a funnel, causing storm surge to be exaggerated and concentrated. Something similar to that could occur with y'all.

Also, our tunnels were flooded. The pumps weren't nearly enough to keep them dry.

Downtown was under about 5 or 6 feet of water. The city sits maybe 8 to 10 feet above sea level. Like Mobile, not all of NYC will be flooded, as there are many parts of the city that are high enough to escape the surge.

Good news is that the city of Mobile recovered quickly. Construction on the RSA Battlehouse Tower was halted for an amount of time, but resumed relatively soon.

Hurricane Irene "Looking Bad" for U.S.—Moon May Make It Worse
Unusually high tides and potentially unprepared towns might spell disaster.

Willie Drye in Plymouth, North Carolina
for National Geographic News
Published August 25, 2011

Blame It on the Moon?

Meteorologist Jeff Masters, director of the Weather Underground website, said flooding caused by Hurricane Irene could be worse than usual, because the storm will be making landfall during a new moon.

During new and full moons, the sun, Earth, and the moon are arranged in a straight line, with the sun and moon intensifying each other's gravitational pull on Earth. The result is more severe tidal fluctuations—low tides are lower than usual, but more to the point, high tides are higher.

Due to these so-called spring tides ("spring" in the sense of jumping), any town that sees the hurricane pass by during one of the two daily high tides is especially in danger of heavy flooding due to storm surges—for example, if Atlantic City, New Jersey, is hit between 7 and 8 p.m. ET Sunday, Masters said.

Goodness!

My prayers go out to those in New York City, and really the whole coast. And a little extra to the WTC site...

Stay safe!

Ladies and Gentlemen; Please be safe tomorrow into monday. We are all bracing for a massive hurricane named irene. Please lock all your windows and have batteries, first aid kit, water, unperisable foods, and keep your most important documents near you just in case. We all should start to pray for the less fortunate in the even that unfolding as we speak.

Here's an idea of how long the hurricane will last for Lower Manhattan. The graph starts Saturday morning and ends Monday morning. Pretty much looks like Sunday Noon time will be when the worst of the wind comes.

I was in Ike too! I lived across from the Galleria and it was pretty intense. I did not have power for well over a week. Now I live in NYC and have to ride this one out too.

Like something out of that history channel series "life after people". Well except for the cleaners and the cops.

This storm is very VERY similar to Katrina. The only thing missing is a tight eyewall. But that's not even the part that hit New Orleans and Louisiana. All of the significant damage came from storm surge and levy breaks. Winds had very little impact. Praying for the East Coast. Take cover and be prepared to be without power for a while.
