Smile NEW YORK | City braces for possible evacuations/effects of Irene

New York Region Prepares for Hurricane Irene

By JAMES BARRON
August 25, 2011

Quote:
With Hurricane Irene threatening a full-force hit, New York City on Thursday ordered the evacuation of nursing homes and senior centers in low-lying areas and made plans for the unprecedented shutdown of the entire transit system .

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said the city was ready with “evacuation contingencies” for low-lying areas like Coney Island in Brooklyn, Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan and parts of Staten Island and the Rockaways in Queens — areas that are home to 250,000 people. He said the city was ordering nursing homes in those areas to evacuate residents beginning at 8 a.m. Friday unless they receive special permission from state and city health officials...

Mayor Orders "Most Vulnerable" New Yorkers Evacuated Before Hurricane Irene's Arrival

By: NY1 News

Quote:
City officials will decide by 8 a.m. Saturday whether evacuations are needed for residents of the city's low-lyings areas, such as Battery Park City in Manhattan, Coney Island in Brooklyn, the Rockaways in Queens and some parts of Staten Island.

This comes as Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency this afternoon in advance of Hurricane Irene's arrival.

Bloomberg Weighs Evacuation Ahead of Hurricane Irene

Mayor Michael Bloomberg watched Thursday as a New York City work crew cleared a storm sewer in Queens ahead of Hurricane Irene’s arrival.

By Michael Howard Saul
August 25, 2011

Quote:
Bloomberg emphasized Thursday that he has the power to both recommend and force evacuations, but said the city will only order an evacuation in the worst circumstances. Asked how the city might enforce an evacuation, the mayor replied: “The worst case, if they didn’t leave…they could die.”

The latest forecasts show Hurricane Irene reaching the New York area on on Sunday as a Category 2 storm, but there remains significant uncertainty around its ultimate path. “Anything can happen in terms of its direction and its severity,” Bloomberg said.

I remember someone was talking about where they would put one of the space shuttles and that it would probably be outside on the deck of the aircraft carrier. I had to wonder then about storms like this since New York does have some bad weather every now and again.

Glass buildings might not do so well in this hurricane, if in fact it hits NYC with as much intensity as it's currently forecasted.

Damn, Irene is going to be a real bitch, no doubt about it. Mother Nature can certainly be cruel sometimes!

Nursing homes, hospitals evacuated in New York as city preps for 1st hurricane in decades

Associatedd Press, Updated: Thursday, August 25

Quote:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered nursing homes and five hospitals in low-lying areas evacuated beginning Friday and said he would order 270,000 other people moved by Saturday if the storm stays on its current path.

“For the general public, it’s a good idea to move Friday,” Bloomberg said. “Keep in mind, it is possible — I don’t know that I want to say likely — but it is very conceivable ... that Saturday morning at 8 o’clock, we’re going to say, ‘Look, the forecast has not changed. The storm is still barreling down on us. It’s still very dangerous. You must get out of these areas.’”
Sounds clear enough for those in the lowlying neighborhoods...

Irene a rare storm that could devastate NYC

By Michelle Miller .

August 25, 2011

Quote:
We've known for a long time that New York City is vulnerable to a hurricane, and as Irene bears down, the city is preparing for the worst, CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller reports.

At the Coney Island amusement park, thrill seekers got in some last minute rides Thursday, but an evacuation order for the entire area could be coming soon.

Billy Burke has worked at a Coney Island restaurant for 29 years. He's never seen a hurricane before. "They're talking about 20-foot waves. If that happens this place will be underwater," Burke said.

Coney Island could be Irene's first stop in New York City as the storm rolls over the 5 million people living in Queens and Brooklyn.
I don't think Coney's first, but it hardly matters. The entire NE looks to be hit.

It looked like the track has it making landfall slightly west of New York. That would be worse since it would put the city on the windiest side of the storm.

Before Hurricane Irene hits, New York planning to shut down transportation system, evacuate areas

Mayor Michael Bloomberg talks to local officials and residents concerning the preparation for Hurricane Irene inside St. Luke's Baptist Church in Laurelton Thursday.

BY Reuven Blau, Jennifer H. Cunningham and Bill Hutchinson
August 25, 2011

Quote:
The city is planning to shut down the entire transportation system on Saturday in anticipation of Hurricane Irene's arrival, officials revealed Thursday....He (Bloomberg) said a decision will be made by Saturday morning on whether to call for a mandatory evacuation of all low-lying areas in what he referred to as "Zone A," which includes Coney Island, the Rockaways and Battery Park City.

He said about 250,000 New Yorkers live in Zone A, which also includes South Beach and Midland Beach in Staten Island.

* The MTA took the unprecedented move of setting its hurricane plan in motion, which calls for a complete shutdown of subways, trains and buses when sustained winds reach at least 39 mph.

* More than 300 street fairs and other city permitted events scheduled for this weekend were cancelled.

I really feel for NYC. Even if the storm weakens considerably, the winds still get amplified by the canyons among the skyscrapers. I suspect that street signs and street lamps and whatever else isn't tied down would just turn into flying debris. I'm pretty optimistic though, that NY will bounce back pretty quick from any and all damage. Stay safe NYC.

Let's hope it just blows over (pun intended) and ends up being a non-event like Carmegeddon on the I-405 in L.A. turned out to be.

10 hurricane survival tips for New York, D.C.
Hurricane Irene promises chaos most urbanites have never seen

By Jennifer Waters
August 26, 2010

Quote:
Winds can level old or weakened buildings, blow out windows, uproot trees, cars and air conditioners, tear down power lines and signs and scatter roof tiles. That in and of itself will be chaotic, but high winds aren’t always the worst culprits. It’s often the windborne debris — the sign, the tree limb, the roof tiles — that causes widespread damage to high rises and store fronts.

Moreover, water damage is a bigger danger to people thanks to storm surge, which is an abnormal rise of ocean waters — also loaded with debris — pushed to the shores by the force of the winds.

In New York, where the seawalls surrounding Manhattan, for example, are only five feet high in places, widespread flooding could occur, overwhelming subways, tunnels and roadways with what amounts to sewer water. Masters said that Irene could inundate portions of the coast under 10 feet to 15 feet of water “to the highest storm surge depths ever recorded,” he said.

Hurricane Irene: New York City Direct Hit?

By DAN HARRIS
Aug. 25, 2011

Quote:
Philadelphia, Boston and New York are some of the largest metro areas in the United States, and Hurricane Irene is heading their way.

Tonight many of the forecast models show the center of the storm blowing straight through New York City.

There are dozens of models that are changing all the time, but this morning one had the Big Apple, and its 19 million people, taking a direct hit. The model showed the center of the storm going up Fifth Avenue past the iconic lions of the New York Public Library and then up the west side of Central Park.

What Happens When a Super Storm Strikes New York?
Hurricane Irene is bearing down on the Big Apple. But this scenario isn't out of the blue. Using U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' calculations,
PM examined how much damage a direct hit by even a mild hurricane could cause the city.

By Douglas Fox

Quote:
New York Harbor has often sheltered the city, dissipating energy from violent gales that start at sea. But now it plays an opposite role: It turns an otherwise moderate hurricane into a disaster. As the eye of the storm passes over Staten Island, the 100-mph counterclockwise winds shove 500 million tons of seawater directly into the harbor. The narrowing shorelines and shallowing sea bottom cause the mass of water to build. By the time the storm surge washes over the shores of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan, it towers 11 to 15 feet high.

Water flows through New York's financial district and reaches 2 miles into southern Brooklyn and Queens, flooding 2900 miles of roads. Impromptu rivers gush into subway stations and pour through hundreds of sidewalk gratings....

Weather.com's current 'most center-ly path' takes it over JFK. Still a day or two away, so who knows what Irene plans on doing.

Looks like it will just be a category 1 by the time it reaches New York. No real threat of bad wind damage at that level, sure some power outages and downed trees but not much more than that. The storm surge will be the biggest threat to New York since much of the area is close to sea level.

If this happened to remain a major hurricane (cat 3) when it hits NYC this would be the most significant storm of the nation's history.

^^^ Those statements are absurd. Thats not an objective measure like cost of damage or lives lost.

I'm pretty enfuriated with this disaster "planning" that Bloomberg is attempting just to save his butt from another blizzard. It seems more like disaster panicking.
