Not to be paranoid or anything, but don't they design pretty much every modern skyscraper for any sort of ground movements? I know NYC wouldn't have building codes like in L.A. but I just wanted to be sure it's something they consider in the design process regardless of where a building is built.

Yes. Take a look at the New York Building codes and read the section about earthquake protection.

The entire site should be capable to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake.

Hey Traynor, has this passed any other Lower Manhattan buildings with the latest steel additions? Is it time to break out the check board?

Any official word on when exactly the observation deck of the new World Trade Center will be open? I would like to plan a trip to New York City at that time.

It's not open until 2013 when the rest of the building officially opens I think.

As Zapatan pointed out, 1WTC is the tallest in Lower Manhattan and has been for several weeks. I retired the Lower Manhattan Checklist at that time and created an all of New York Checklist, which I posted. However, 1WTC (at 991 feet) has a way to go until it passes the next two tall buildings which are the New York Times Tower (*grumble, grumble...stupid spire*) and The Chrysler Building at 1046 feet.

Good thing no workman happened to be walking on a steel girder 900 plus feet off the ground when the quake hit. I hope...

I might be worried about being a crane operator. What sort of earthquake design ratings do tower cranes have?

They certainly are not designed to withsatnd the same as the tower. Tapei 101 in 2002 is testament to that:
