Too bad they aren't putting any apartments atop Portage Place or Winnipeg Square. It'd be a boost to the faltering malls there, and those areas of Downtown after 7 pm lack the most people around

I meant specifically cranes in downtown, say you were to take a skyline pic or overhead downtown pic or something along those lines

This can't be argued. It would only add to it. I think a lot of these downtown malls are not appreciated for how busy they are - both Sqaure & Place I find are very busy during business hours, more specifically lunch time. The more office space the merrier downtown!

Interesting. In terms of downtown, Winnipeg's ratio of workers in the core is actually quite high - absolute numbers are around 75,000 or so (and that number has probably been the same for the last few decades, despite the population growth). Lets hope that when the grants dry up, people will still be moving into the core as they have slowly been for the last 8 years or so...

Winnipeg Square is not going dead. Between 11 AM and 2 PM every single workday it is likely one of the busiest malls in the city for foot traffic (and possibly transactions) outside of Christmas season.

Not really construction related, but what's the story with the Jubilee underpass?

Every time I drive under it, I wonder if the original plan was to extend Jubilee Eastward towards Waverley. I know Jubilee is a busy street, but is it so busy that it warrants its own underpass?

If they did extend Jubilee Eastward, it would really cut down on the number of vehicles that make left turns from Harrow and Stafford.

Don't forget that you're talking about a relatively busy intersection and a rail line . A real clusterf*ck prior to the underpass I'm guessing.

U of W an eatery magnet
7 restaurants springing up in campus district

A smorgasbord of new restaurants will be sprouting up around the University of Winnipeg campus during the next few months, breathing new life into the west side of downtown.

Seven new eateries will be opening in the Portage Avenue area west of Memorial Boulevard. They include four outlets in U of W buildings and three in a long-vacant building two blocks west of the main university campus -- the former McDonald's restaurant on the south side of Portage at Langside Street.

Most of the new outlets will be open seven days a week from early morning until late at night, which should mean more people on the streets when the downtown needs them most -- evenings and weekends.

The University of Manitoba will not add parking lots to accommodate Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans at the football team's new stadium.

The university also will not allow parking on open fields or green space on campus, nor will it allow football parking on the golf course it owns immediately north of the stadium, the U of M's first director of campus planning said Wednesday.

"There's an event-day planning process" for the stadium, which is scheduled to open next year, said Michelle Richard. Fans will have to use existing parking, "without looking at new ones."

Damn, I totally forgot that the rail line could affect the street.

The whole intersection is pretty unusual though. Even if they never considered extending Jubilee, I wonder if they could in the future? Aside from the BRT route, the majority of the Parker area seems empty.

I can concur. I was just there as well and we took the Red line from downtown which lets you off 1 block away on Addisson. It was fun getting kind of local.

All we need is chicago's mass transit system and were set then. Not really a legitimate comparison.

There are under 1000 spots at McMahon.

However there is also an LRT station across the street.

exactly.....both calgary and edmonton have good LRT systems that go right to the stadium...neither are on a peninsula with 2 roads in or out....and both are reasonably central.

should have built the stadium at the canada packers site.
