It'd be nice to have a Burger King downtown again

Curious if anyone knows the story behind that half finished apartment building just off McPhillips across from the shoppers drug mart? It's been just a shell for a good couple of years at least. Bringing it up cause they have started building and selling condos as part of the same project just behind that area. The half finished thing is a huge eye sore. Went to check out the condos this weekend and the realtor had no idea what the plan was for that building. I believe B&M land is in charge of the project.

^ are you talking about that huge development just off McPhillips?

If so, that project had stalled for a couple years, but is back on. I believe it will be completed as originally specified. There are several buildings half finished, fully finished, and then a few bare foundations waiting for new structure.

^ that's good to hear. That was certainly an eyesore

So just for fun, I wonder how many skyline cranes we'll have during the pinnacle of downtown development these next few years... Winnipeg ain't no Calgary or Edmonton but for a city of 750k, I think it holds up nicely...

We'll have CMHR, Heritage and alt hotel cranes for sure in 2012/13. What about the parkades? So we might have 3-4 individual project cranes downtown? Not bad. The most since I've been in Peg

Rocerfeller, you from london originally? As in London Ontario? If so that is kind of funny, because we did a complete flip of each other.

2011/2012 Portage @ Westwood possibly
2014/2015 Fort Rouge TOD
2012ish HSC CanadInns
2012ish McPhillips CanadInns
2013? Cocvention Centre Hotel

Too bad they aren't putting any apartments atop Portage Place or Winnipeg Square. It'd be a boost to the faltering malls there, and those areas of Downtown after 7 pm lack the most people around

I hear that a lot but really outside of restaurants are people doing much shopping before attending a hockey game?

The food court will definetely get a boost. There's a new tenant opening in the city place food court in the fall in a long time vacant space.

The malls would get a bigger boost if the pads were used for commercial office space and not apartments.

In offices you usually have 1 person for every 100-120 sq ft where apartments usually only have 1 person per 500 sq ft.

They could always go for the Manhattan style 78 sq ft apartments.

By that logic, Winnipeg Square should be the busiest mall in the city by far...

It actually is VERY busy due to the number of buildings directly connected to it.

It doesn't have the same hours and peaks as Polo Park but I would say that businesses in the mall are quite successful and another office tower would only add to it.

What's wrong with that? It serves a valuable purpose and does it well IMO. It is handy to have a food court, banks, a drug store, drycleaners, a tailor, a shoe repair place, a florist, a card shop and cell phone shops within walking distance of the office.

I generally don't go buy shoes or pants when I am at work (although some might), but I certainly run a lot of small errands at lunch or before I head home.

Making office oriented malls like this even busier will allow for more traditional retail outlets to be viable as well.

Also (as I have always preached) the more people you have working downtown, the greater the potential for people living downtown.

The Ashdown conversion was completed YEARS before Eaton's shut down. It was completed during the Marble Club's heydays IIRC.
