I seem to remember the Mayor commenting a few years ago that the downtown height limits were more restrictive than they needed to be and the restriction was somewhat obsolete. This was regarding the Lighthouse tower proposal though, which is further northeast and further from the flight cone.

We'll see what happens.

Every flight home I've had has landed using the approach over Lawson Heights. I can't imagine that the other runway gets used as often.

pretty much on a daily basis there are planes using the flight path that is over the city centre. Caswell Hill is part of that path and I see/hear them daily (sometimes flying low enough to rattle windows). They get pretty low, though I have no idea if a 95 m building matters.

I would expect that something as major as flight paths would have been accounted for in the re-design of RLV, but I guess it can't be ruled out given all the twists and turns in this saga.

For the record, I like the redesigned public space. I'm not entirely sold on the increased height of all buildings and the loss of street level setbacks. I am fairly surprised that Council would be okay with less parking after all the hand-wringing on downtown parking these past few years.

As for this passing through Council, they have moved the goal posts after the fact so many times on Parcel Y that one more compromise on the DCD1 guidelines will happen without much of a debate.

The question is - if this lastest design was the project they orginally tendered 5 years ago, would Lake Placid have been the only bid?

It get's used quite a bit. It depends on the prevailing winds. Planes frequently fly over my house in BV.

Here is an article supporting that back from 2008. I do live downtown and see planes using the other flight path often.

I don't know much about saskatoons downtown other than what I see in pictures but really don't know how this could cause problems for aircraft unless this building going to be 40 story's there should be not much of a issues I think in Regina due to some runway upgrades they changed the flight paths some of the approches for there final decent is sometime right over downtown regina or very close from what I have seen but I am no expert .

Knowing something about flight protocol planes landing North-South will be at around 800-1200ft AGL while passing over the river so at that height there would be no issue at that point. During take-off they would be somewhere between 2000-3000ft AGL which is defiantly not an issue.

Concerning downtown Regina and our flight paths, Downtown is actually considerably north of the east-west path and is completely out of the way of the north-west south-east path. If you look closer at Google maps even, or any of our city documents, you'll see that aircraft actually come in almost right overhead the provincial legislature.. also a reason why downtown Regina has so few height limits. There is a good portion of our downtown that allows us to build as high as the ground underneath.

As for Saskatoon, that looks like it is about 5 kilometres direct from overhead downtown to your airport. Planes have descent fairly low by the 5 kilometre mark, but even we still have 11-12 story buildings that are closer to 2.5 kilometres directly under the flight path from our airport.. i.e. rainbow heights near south land mall. I would think that considering other cities in the world, especially those in the orient, would have considerable density even around some of the airports. Also, think about the descent over the mountain onto the plateau of Bogota. I have taken this flight before and I can tell you first hand that it is a fairly steep descent. So, whats the reason airliners can not make the steeper descent into the airport.

However, I have not looked into the geometry of the all this, but I see no reason there couldn't be a 3o floor tower placed along the river in downtown Stoon, considering the building would be on the edge of the wide flight cone.

ALSO, could it be a possibility the because the ground is in fact lower on the airport side of the city, that planes are already flying lower than normal over certain areas of the city?

I was going to say the same thing. It looks like they are still very high above Buena Vista so I doubt a 27 story building is going to be a problem.

I was thinking a bit today about the future of the Mendel gallery, and then while perusing the Winnipeg construction forum I came across this as an apparent Assiniboine Park Family Centre.

I think the potential to redesign this building as a true community centre--situated as it is along the gorgeous river bank--is absolutely huge.
