The difference is that land in Downtown Vancouver costs about 10 times as much as land on 13th. Plus most people in Regina still drive, so you need the big ugly parking lot.

There is a bit more activity at City Square today. They are installing what looks like cedar or redwood decking on the foundation for the future restaurant building, another load of the squiggly sun shades are being installed and the paving stones are inching towards Scarth Street. They have at least 2 weeks of work to complete the paving stones at this pace.

I think the shade screens are a good idea. It extremely hot in the sun along the north side of 12th, with the sun reflecting off the buildings. The multi-coloured powder coating on the squiggles should look cool. I am glad they are not corten steel.

The small building on the NE corner of the Golden Mile parking lot will be the site of an Original Joe's outlet. Thank gawd that it's not a Tim's!!!!

Lowe's grand opening will be Sept 16.

Still is talk that the Plains will meet a wrecking ball this month.

Near the end July, a Capital Pointe developer told News Talk Radio that demolition of the Plains Hotel would be begin in the next week.

That news came from Bright Star Corporation, one of the developers, almost two weeks ago.

Regina’s Mayor Pat Fiacco has been hearing the same thing.

“I’m not so much worried as I am disappointed,” he said.

This piece of land is slated to become a massive hotel and condo project and units have already been sold.

Fiacco and News Talk Radio were told that financial problems led to the creation of a joint venture that in turn slowed down the project.

Fiacco says from his understanding that all the papers have now been signed and they are to move forward. He said he was told the wrecking ball will swing this month.

Well it is coming from the mayor, so it might be true.

You know I really don't get these developers, they've opening admitted that people who have put deposits are upset and that some have pulled out, so you'd think they'd go out of their way to get this going and for once meet the dates that they convey to the public. But it's like they almost don't care, they say don't worry, things are on track, next week this is gonna happen, and then it doesn't. Are these guys just bad businessmen??

It will be good if the city forces the plains to be torn down as it is a comlete eyesore, but I fear that site will just end up as another parking lot which is the last thing downtown needs..

I haven't heard this either, but hopefully it's true. I also noticed the hotel a block south, think it is the Travellodge is getting a bit of a facelift. Not sure how extensive but they seem to be sprucing it up a bit on the outside at least.

I couldn't make the meeting, but I did hear there was some good discussion and that Safeway has anticipated some of the concerns local citizens were going to raise and have some pro-active plans to deal with those. First, they are considering bringing in an architect who lives in the area to have a look at the design and hopefully come up with something less urban looking and fits the area a bit better. They are also looking at relocating the houses as opposed to just demolishing them. So kudos to Safeway for trying to work within the community for this development.

Is that a light on top of the fountain, would be cool if it lit up at night. One spot to locate this could be on the west side of the legislative building. There is a fountain on the east side so this could be a nice balance, and it would be close to the other memorials, WW1 and WW2 and on a site that gets lots of tourists. Although it would also be nice to have it close to its original location in Victoria park, perhaps at the one of the south side entrances.

Really? Safeway & P3A told me that the "other guys" wouldn't discuss obvious design & neighbourhood interface improvements. As far as I can tell, Safeway has done no thinking about the site and community, pulling a standard suburban design off the shelf and dropped it onto the site.

Planning Commission will be ugly if they try to bring the existing proposal forward. There are a lot of very annoyed, very organized residents that will send delegations.

I hope that Safeway decides to walk-the-talk, and actually put a community-sensitive design in there.

CBC has a video about the open house. According to the video, the design doesn't sit well with a lot of people (not surprising) and Safeway plans to find out what people are looking for in the design. They seem to be open to ideas.

Hey Regina Friends,

Saskatoon's version of Capital Pointe (the River Landing Village) is once more in the news. We have been waiting a long time to hear from the local developer who took over the project and a news conference was held today. They are asking council for permision to approve a new design that actually allows for higher buildings then in original concept.

I know this is Saskatoon based news, but projects of this scale benefit the entire province!

Probably taking over "The Drink" maybe? I think that place is closed for good now... Can't say I've heard any news though.

Pure ran an advertisement in the Leader-Post the other day as Regina's first "luxe nightclub". The address is 2044 Dewdney Avenue. This is the address of the former 'The Drink' and before that, 20.44
It is scheduled to open in September, according to the ad.
